The Suzuki-Fiat partnership continues to grow. Suzuki finally gets the 1.6 MJD and trust them to bring it to India before FIAT figures out what is going on !

Suzuki Motor Corp said on Monday it has agreed to buy 1.6 litre diesel engines from Fiat's powertrain unit to mount on a new car to be built in Hungary from 2013.

The Japanese automaker has been buying 2.0 litre diesel engines from Fiat Powertrain Technologies since 2006 for the SX4 made in Hungary. Suzuki also produces 1.3 litre diesel engines under licence from Fiat Powertrain Technologies in India.

This 1.6 MJD from Fiat has all the makings of a 'national engine' part deux. The numbers are not bad - 100+bhp/21+kgm torque.

It could not have come any sooner. The SX4 is no longer segment champion and it badly needs a more powerful diesel. Fiat also has a 120bhp version. A made-in-India Kizashi with a 1.6 MJD would be something, wouldn't it?

I second that opinion. +1 to that. :OT Our current version of Linea definitely needs a better engine. Its a gem of a car provided it got some more under the hood :) Can we expect a Linea with this 1.6MJD any time soon in India? I am wondering why Fiat is not taking such a step provided they have a huge potential. 1.6MJD is very well acclaimed all over also.

The DDiS / Quadrajet is a technology developed by Fiat & GM alone. Suzuki is beneficiary due to its alliance with GM.

Since trade litigations are there between GM & Fiat, the engines made their debut in Suzuki vehicles.

To make a long story short, Fiat had a patent for Diesel engine design but no money to develop the engine. GM gave the investment and an partnership was formed. After engine got developed, the JV was broke, resulting in engine being owned by both groups. Fiat contested this and won.

It seems there is a major fallout of VW with Suzuki motors.
