guys...

needed some information/inputs :

I have been given to understand that the pre-1997 (?) TATA Sierras were not turbocharged.

I have the following specific queries:

1. Can such a Sierra engine be modified to make it Turbocharged and Intercooled?
2. What specifics will such a modification entail ?
3. What will such a modification cost ?
4. What about reliability issues with such a mod ?
5. Does it make sense at all ?
6. If intending to carry out such an operation, what should be the price at which the second hand Sierra itself should be picked up ?
7. Also, as a reference, what does a TurboCharged second hand Sierra go for ?
8. Will getting this mod (Turbocharging and Intercooling) improve the FE of the vehicle ? Approx. by how much ?
9. What is your advice on going for a second hand NON-turbocharged Sierra ? performance and driving pleasure wise.

Will greatly appreciate your inputs on the above.

Thanks in advance,

cheers,
hell_rider

Turbocharging is serious business, bottom end needs to be strengthened, exhaust valve needs to be sodium cooled, oil pump needs to be bolstered, most important, oil cooler and oil cooled pistons are a must. Cooling system needs to be upgraded and lastly, so does the injection pump and injector pressure. Mild turbocharging as seen in most Indian vehicles don't' need inter cooler except for emissions purposes. Consider all this before you embark on the turbo adventure, check for turbo Sierra engine parts and see if they can be grafted into your engine.

With prices low as they are, go find a second hand Sierra turbo rather than the hassle of a conversion

Sound advice, Ajmat. Not worth turbocharging one at these prices, unless one is BENT on doing the mods and learning from them...

Hi hell rider

I own a NA Tata Sierra. Why dont you check out my long term ownership report here?

1994 Tata Sierra Long Term Ownership Report

Dippy

actually i had read the following two posts before I posted this thread :

1. Dippy's "long term report on his Sierra" and
2. the thread on "How to modify a diesel engine".

this subject came up while with a couple of guys yesterday and I wanted to run it through you guys to mainly check whether it made any sense at all.

my queries stand cleared.

thanks to all.
