Mercedes Benz launches the new S350 and S350 CDI in India

Mercedes Benz India has launched the S350 and S350 CDIL Blue Efficiency variants of the 2010 S Class in India close on the heels of the S500 which was launched earlier this month.

S350 L petrol:

Engine: 3498cc V6
Power: 272 BHP @6300 rpm
Torque: 345 Nm @4500 rpm

S350 CDIL Blue Efficiency:

Engine: 2987cc V6
Power: 210 BHP @4000 rpm
Torque: 490 Nm @1600-1800 rpm

The S350 CDI has less torque torque than even the E250 CDI which stands at 500 Nm

Prices: Ex Showroom Delhi

S350L : Rs. 82 lakhs
S350 CDIL Blue Efficiency: Rs. 80.50 lakhs

Some of the highlights of the new models:
  • SPLITVIEW technology. With two views on a single screen, both the driver & the front passenger can view different functions simultaneously on the screen. A wireless headphone with remote ensures that the co-passenger does not interfere with the driver’s focus while on the road.
  • Redesigned rear entertainment screens with remote control & 2 wireless headphones as well as standard massage function for the rear passenger.
  • Advance Parking Guidance with ultrasonic sensors
  • Multicolour Ambient Lighting, LED Light Package
  • Climatised seats
  • ATTENTION ASSIST

Here's a video of s350 L. With a top speed of 250 Km/h, this one really seems to be cruising.

One question : Why is the power rating of the S350 CDI lower than the E350 CDI? The latter makes 540 NM of torque. Even the E250 CDI makes more torque @ 500 NM.

At 490 Nm @1600-1800 rpm, the S350 CDI still is an amazingly powerful car for Indian standards. Our Maruti Suzuki Swift is petrol is 113Nm @ 4,500rpm and diesel is 190Nm @ 2,000rpm and still I feel that Dzire diesel is a very torquey car. In that respect, the S350 CDI is A ok for me as far as driving in India is concerned.

I hope there are some typo errors in the press release as a max torque range of 1600-1800 rpm is very narrow for a diesel engine, especially a V6?
The E-Class variant has a max torque range of 1600-2400 rpm (taken from GTO's review).

EDIT: Ignore my post, just checked MB-India website and the data is correct.

I don't see much changes in its exteriors to differentiate it from the previous model. They could have atleast changed the alloys!

I have a question why diesel is sold for lesser price than petrol, which is not the case with < 20 lakh cars.
Can anyone tell us what's price difference between 2009 and 2010 model?

The prices have been hiked by a whopping 3-4 lakhs just for the facelift. Still short on equipment. No night vision or auto decklid closing. The alloys look sick.

Though reverse camera, SD/MMC card capability etc has been added. The engines are the same old ones. S 320 CDI has been given the blue efficiency tech and renamed as S 350 CDI.

I had the invitation for the launch, but I couldn't attend since I was at B'lore on an official trip. I love it, overall loading, techs & improvements are very impressive, but MB India should have changed the basic wheel of the S350s, atleast do the next basic 5-spoke. The new S500 wheels are brilliant, but S350 disappointed me!

Here is the official press relaese from MBIL: photos are similar to the one Dippy posted, hence skiping it;

The E320CDi get's tweaked to fool us that it actually is the real 350CDi engine that comes in the E-class? I hope this is an error or I'm losing even more respect for this brand and it's cost saving tactics !

The ability to choose your ambient lighting color is attractive and so are some of the newer features added. But still the 7 series seems like a better buy. The S-class maybe more comfy but the 7 is more value. I was hoping MB up the S to a good extent this time to be ahead of the new 7 but they disappointed once again. All they have done is "matched" the 730lD engine.
When will you stop this matching game and step ahead of the competition MBIL ?

Sahil, its Merc global stratergy to use either 00 or 50 in its model names, like E200, E250, E350, S350, S400, S500, S600, etc. instead of 20, 30, etc., like E220, E230, S320, S430, etc. Even BMW has changed their strategy in this, like earlier they had iL, now its Li, they had 745, now its 740, like that it goes!

Maybe so, but it is misguiding the customer. Especially when you are selling an E350CDi with much more power. Besides after paying almost double you still do not get as much power as the E350CDi, that's a logic I just cannot digest.
