Paris, Sep 12: French carmaker Renault will manufacture right-hand drive cars in India for export.

The decision was announced at a meeting French CEOs had with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday.

The prime minister invited French power companies to invest in the Indian nuclear power sector.

The French CEOs expressed interest in investing in India's retail and banking sectors. They were particularly keen to get involved in infrastructural projects in power, roads and ports.

Meanwhile, India and France, two world powers in their own right, on Monday vowed to expand their strategic ties, as President Jacques Chirac firmly threw his weight behind New Delhi's claim for a permanent UN Security Council seat.

Chirac and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared during their talks at the Elysee Palace here that they wanted to expand their military and economic cooperation in an increasingly unipolar world dominated by the US.

Singh, the first Indian prime minister to visit France in seven years, went public with a demand that France should play a pro-active role in ending the nuclear sanctions imposed on New Delhi following its 1998 nuclear tests which the West condemned.

Chirac, whose meeting with Singh was his first public engagement since he was discharged from a hospital Friday, described India as "a major power in the world" and made clear his determination to deepen his engagement with New Delhi..

What? No mention of Mahindra?

GTO

Yeah I thought they were getting the Dacia Logan out in 07 with M&M

There is going to be a 7seater Logan Estate as well. Its made by DC design and looks quite good IMHO. Its going to be a Estate butttttttt with 7 seats, it surely will sell in huge numbers. Its going to be launched world wide. In India thought first the sedan will be launched in 2007 and then later the estate will follow.

so what is M&M's role in this???

Same role as what role Opel has in GM Cars. i.e Its like a TATA-FIAT venture. Renault will sell cars through M n M outlet :p

and As Nissan became the 2nd largest car manufacturer with Renault's help Mahindra too can do wonders.

Its made by DC??? This fortnight's AUTOCAR UK has the pics of the Estate version but its not a Logan Estate its a different car altogether. Its actually titled FAUX SUV (cos of its very SUVish design) and its slated to be around 8000euros.

Later this year, the CEO of Renault Nissan (Carlos Ghosn) is to come to India.

Its actually a weird arrangement that Renault-Nissan have....
Renault ties up with Mahindras for the Logan
Nissan enters on its own
Renault trucks is 'supposed' to enter on its own
Renault sets up a design center with the Mahindras

And as far DC designing it goes, i have my doubts the Logan and this to be launched estate is totally functional in design and not stylized. For eg. their windscreen unlike regular cars is flat and is not curved like other cars(to cut costs), the bumper is built into the body etc....so it requires crazy amounts of R&D, which i doubt DC actually does (no offense). Unless he's only built the prototype but for a car who's production cost is to be around 8000euros i wonder...

Apprantely i got hold of a road test by indian website for the Logan.

Hmm....Interesting news....also inetersting they havent mentioned M&M.

any chances of the megane being launched.then swift & getz will have a healthy competitor.
OT :OT do u pronounce l & t in renault.
or is is just pronounced as reno

Looks like they are planning to dump M&M as soon as they get settled in India.......just like every other auto major.

Today's TOI - Times Drive section had an article on the Renault-Mahindra Logan. From the looks of it, seems to be a killer product, which will do to the C segment what the Swift has done to the B segment. It is unbeliveable that the car of that spec can be ours for Rs 4L. Future of Aveo, Fiesta looks bleak.

With the Logan and a new, improved Scorpio to come out in 2007, may still be a good time to buy M&M shares!!

Logan is going to be made in India by a mahindra renault JV. About the DC Logan estate, I am not sure, it may cannibalise the Scorpio, unless mahindra positiones it as a true suv, and not car.

Bussiness wise renault will make a big mistake if it dumps mahindra and comes on its own. As logan is no great looker, they need the mahindra name in India to state the cars ruggedness which it really has. It can really handle abuse according to Some reviews.

Well it is going to hot things up in here if priced right. Which means lots of localisation, fast, which means local partner, So here the wheels turnes full circle. Or see what GM has done to itself. They launch good meaningfull products, but are always late.

The Logan is supposed to have the "tall boy design" according to BUSA's link. But this car definately does not look like a tallboy... may be slightly "cab foward'ish", but definately not tall boy. Otherwise it might have looked like a combination of an Ikon and a Santro or Wagon R.

Notice how similar the shape is to an Ikon? Especially the headlight, the side-rear (near the taillight) and the SVM's! Change the grill and the front bumper to that of an Ikon's and no one would be wiser.

But all this for 4 Lakhs is mighty impressive! This news must have sent a shrudder down Ford, Maruti, Tata & Chevy's spines! Just hope that the seats and dashboard are not optional, for the price it's to be launched at!

Godspeed.

Alok.
