Thanks for this excellent thread! Now what about "Wrong Sign Boards"

Really a Nice thread, I had never known the sign for "No Vehicles carrying Explosives" or VIP Salute. Thanks for all who contributed to this.

I met one Traffic Policeman at Thiruvanmiyur (at the indra nagar road junction) who meticulously used these type of signs for the oncoming traffic, and mind you all, I was shocked to see that someone is so religiously doing this. Also was shocked by his gesture, as I did not understand what he meant

Now my intention is not to spoil the Good learning this Thread imparts, but I am not sure whether this wrong sign board should appear here for you all to see. This is at Velachery-Vijayanagar Junction and is there for almost 6 months or more now. No one including Traffic Policemen who are on duty noticed this to be a mistake. I am not criticizing, but who should we alert in case of such blunders.

What is wrong? Road signs are signs for even the illiterate to understand. Pictures is worth 1000 words.

@NFS - Well, I pass by that way for atleast 5 days a week & I haven't noticed it either. But anyway, I don't need to take a U turn either.

How about dropping a note at Chennai Traffic Police :: Welcome, atleast to begin with?

I assume CCTP should be taking some steps based on few posts here; atleast your's not a complaint, just a suggestion right?

HI NFS

Even though I have been there couple of times in the last six months, never noticed that sign. That "NO" in that board seems an after thought (different formatting / text size). May be the intention was to avoid "U Turn" but the execution isn't worth raving about.

Rule Breaker,

Fab thread. I just wish this thread attracts as many visitors as a fiat vs honda thread attracts. I was clueless about all the signs you have posted. Should be a good learning.

Re: Traffic rules and signs

When a cop stops you, is it legal for him to take your keys and papers? I mean is it mandatory for you to turn over your keys to him if you have all the papers?
What if i say "i won't give you the keys but here are my papers"?

Re: Traffic rules and signs

The U turn sign looks like they had first made the u turn sign and then later realized that it was holding up traffic so put in the no. A proper no u turn sign should have a diagonal line through the u.

The sign that looks like a sideways t is to tell you that there is a side road ahead from where people will be joining so be cautious. Don't know the official name for it though

It is a cautionary sign. Think it is "side road left".

Speaking of official terms - I was taking my LL test in the early 90s when the RTO inspector showed me a symbol with two arrows in opposite directions, one arrow cut off by a thick red line. I was in my board exam mode those days and told him exactly what the official term was "vehicles prohibited in one direction". He snapped back saying "One way symbol, Ri. Ashtu gotillva? (Don't you know this symbol stands for One-way)". I stopped using official terminology with officials

I never do that. First thing, I do is kill the engine and pocket the key. I clearly tell him, I am not a criminal, I 'm not going to run away. If I have to pay fine, I will..but my bike, my keys, my pocket!

Re: Traffic rules and signs

Any idea on what this signboard means? One says "No U turn" and the other one is "U turn". However the sign boards are in different shapes.
