Can the hatch handle that 100BHP at corners ? A big question!
@GTO: Any schedule for its review?

EDIT: I missed the other posts. The 1.6L engine is only a holiday I guess.

carwale has got the on road pricing for mumbai and delhi updated- can check it there, the 1.2 highline P comes to 6.66 lacs on road in mumbai and the 1.2 D highline comes to 7.79 lacs.
Diesel is 1.2 while punto has 1.3 and i-20 1.4 L engine, does it offer more in any way than these cars? Lets wait and see the detailed test drive.

What happened to the 1.6? Is it gone? Are they having second thoughts about giving us the 1.2TSI instead? They should at least make an announcement... after all it was mentioned in the brochure.

The wait for my next car just got longer :(

My guess is that VW is waiting to analyze the impact of this year's budget.

The other two engines, being 1.2 are less likely to be affected while the Govt may introduce extra taxes for bigger engines

I attended the Polo launch which took place at the Taj Land's End in Mumbai this afternoon. It was a quiet affair by Volkswagen standards unlike the flashy Beetle launch in December last year. There was no unveiling or anything of that sort. The cars were already on display when I entered the room. As the prices are already being discussed, I wont get into that. The Polo comes in three variants: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline which is the top end. Some of my observations and important points on the new Polo:
  • I quite the way this car looks. Has the potential of a hot hatch. VW please get the 1.6 in quick.
  • The car feels well built and solid. The interiors are well finished. No prizes for guessing they remind you of the Fabia.
  • 1.2 litre petrol and diesel engines. Both 3 cylinder. Underpowered? Only a test drive will tell.
  • Base Trendline gets only front power windows.
  • Front disc brakes on the Trendline and Comfortline. Highline gets ABS and two air bags.
  • The base Trendline comes with tilt and telescopic adjustment. A good feature IMO.
  • Only two colours on the entry level Trendline: Candy White & Flash Red.
  • The Comfortline variant comes with height adjustable driver's seat.
  • Top end Highline comes with 15" alloys(only 4), CD player with Mp3, rear windshield wiper and defogger, keyless entry with remote opening & closing of windows. An anti theft immobilizer
I met Mr. Lutz Kothe, the GM for Marketing VW at the event. He told me that the Polo will share the same assembly line as the Fabia at the Chakan plant. Though he did not comment on the 1.6 petrol, he said that VW is looking at introducing the TSi engines sometime in the future. When I quizzed him on the Golf, he told me that they don't see the market for the Golf in India just yet but if things change, the Golf will be a possibility for sure. Deliveries for the petrol start on 8th March while the diesel will only be available in from May this year.

Here are some pictures of the car from the launch event

I think this car can handle much more power than this, This is a proper German VW hatchback. Polo will be available internationally with a 170hp 1.4TSi engine this year.

Now I am liking the interior It does have fantastic quality , atleast the pictures suggest that. If it is anything like Fabia then there are no cars in this segment which can be compared with Polo( except Fabia ).

What's that slot in the lid of the glovebox ? Is it a sunglass holder ? Neat job with efficiency ( saved some cost ).

But what's wrong with VW? No electric ORVM adjustment

And no Auto Climate Control and steering mounted audio controls. I am sure the Polo does not even come with USB or iPod connectivity.

Looking at the specs(and current assumption on prices), Ford Figo will win hands down in terms of sales figures

I can't remember where I read this ( may be in this thread itself ) that they provide ACC and steering mounted audio controls as optional accessories . If that's true probably the buyers will be happy or atleast have that as an option though it will be pretty expensive I guess .

I would prefer to have 1.2 TSI. Small displacement + High BHP = More Mileage

A nice comparison between the i20 Asta, GP Emotion Pack and Polo HIghline all petrol
Hyundai i20 Asta vs Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 Emotion Pack vs Volkswagen Polo 1.2L Highline (P) | Car Comparisons - CarWale.com

Punto 1.4 is highest priced, and has the biggest engine in terms of CC. I20 is the least.

And between i20 Asta Diesel, GP 1.3 Emotion Pack and Polo Highline D
Hyundai i20 1.4 Asta Diesel vs Fiat Grande Punto 1.3 Emotion Pack vs Volkswagen Polo 1.2L Highline (D) | Car Comparisons - CarWale.com

All the variants taken have ABS+Air bags, top end versions.

I20 highest priced in this case and has the max CC while the punto least.

Looks like its going to be a fight keeping all things in mind
