New Mitsubishi Pajero Sport! *UPDATE* Price reduced to 22.56 Lakh!

The March 2010 issue of Overdrive has reported that Mitsubishi will launch the new Pajero Sport based on its Tritron pick-up, in India in mid-2010.

The new Pajero wont even be remotely related to the current Pajero (2nd gen Paj) or Montero (4th Gen Paj). Instead it's based on the Mitsubishi's Triton pick-up truck platform and is designed for emerging markets such as South East Asia, South America, Latin America, South Africa and Russia). The new Pajero will compete directly with the Toyota Fortuner (based on Hilux pick-up) which also caters to the same emerging markets.

The New Pajero Sport is already being manufactured in Thailand from where the SUV will initially be imported to India and the assembly operations will commence from early 2011. The SUV is expected to costs around INR20 lacs added Overdrive.

In thailand, the New Pajero Sport comes with two diesel engine options. The main one being the 4M41 3.2 DID commonrail diesel engine which is currently being offered on the Montero. the engine develops about 165 PS and 351Nm of Torque. Again, its possible that the SUV may come with the 4 speed auto tranny with a sports mode which will give the SUV a cometitive edge over its rival Fortuner.

In Thailand, the Pajero Sport also comes with a 4D56 2.5litre four-cylinder common rail diesel engine and the HM-Mitsubishi are mulling over getting this powerplant to India in an effort to keep the costs in check. However, this unit develops 140PS of power, 31 PS less than the Fortuner and will painly not be able to compete with it on Performance. To make things even more difficult, the 2.5 engine of the paj varient in Thailand is not offered with a 4WD and that again will be a problem for Mitsubishi.

So, its important for Mitsubishi-HM to take right steps and price the SUV right with right engine and drivetrain options. The interiors of the car (morelike Outlander) are a tad better than the Fortuner, and the Off-road capabilitites are also very good. Although, the suspention has been tuned for a soft ride and hence body roll and understeer is present while cornering, the Pajero Sport strikes a perfect balance between ride and off road capabilities.

The current Pajero will be rebranded as Pajero classic and will be phased out from Metros and sold in smaller towns where the 2nd generation Pajero has strong image. the Pajero's 2.8litre engine wont be Euro 4 compliant and hence will be phased out in Metropolitan cities.

I will scan and upload Overdrive's detailed reviews of the New Pajero Sport tomorrow.

The Pajero Sport looks butch from front but the rear looks a bit bland. The Fortuner will face some stiff competition for sure from the Sport.

Finally an alternative to the Fortuner ! I'm glad for one reason that my Fortuner deliver has been so delayed. Now atleast we have another option to consider.
Any idea when the car hits the showroom and what will the pricing be like?

Great to see Mitsubishi India is gearing up with the upgraded Outlander & new Pajero.

New Pajero looks good, but it take long way to compete with Fortunner with Toyota having the kind of brand value in India. But might take a bite when it come to waiting period of fortunner.
Anyways Mitsubishi have to build up the A.S.S.

First off, this thing is coming initially as a CBU so knowing these bafoons at HM, they will price it uncompetitively compared to the Endy/Fortuner and expect people to pay up for the Mitsu tag which is loosing it's luster in India..

There is no steering controls!

isn’t that the gap between tire and the body too much!. it looks little punny, as if its hanging over the tires or is it necessary to have those gaps for better offroading!

Anyways pricing would be key if they want to compete with Fortuner/Endy.

Its better not to have much expectations. Personally I didn't like the looks of the car. It looks similar to the Outlander. And most probably they'll price it above the current Pajero which itself is terribly over-priced.

The Pajero Sport does come with Steering mounted controls but not sure if it will be available in India though. Also IMO the gap b/w the tire and body is almost similar to the Fortuner.

Here is a short review of the version sold in middle-east --- First drive: 2009 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport off-road | Drive Arabia : Dubai / Abu Dhabi [UAE, Saudi, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman & GCC]

if not for the brakes, I think Fortuner will still be ahead in the race.

This new Pajero somewhat resembles the Fortunner. Nonetheless, the old Pajero still looks better any day. Something about those straight bonnets and edgy sides which make it look more butch!

i dont think this one will have the pajero tag attached to it.
IMO Mitsubishi should dispose of the current pajero and sell this in instead.

I did not like the looks of the car. It looks too much forturner-ish. Maybe that is the intent. I see nothing wrong with the current Pajero.
