Car sales drive on fast track

Car sales drive on fast track

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

New Delhi: Car sales continued their healthy run in March and enjoyed a financial year full of gains as lower interest rates, new models and government stimulus packages kept demand high.
Maruti, the biggest carmaker, said March sales grew a modest 8% at 79,530 units as it was weighed down by a 1.2% decline in sales of its breadand-butter portfolio of small cars. The company, however, saw full fiscal (2009-10) sales soaring a healthy 21% at 8.7 lakh units.
However, Maruti’s close rival Hyundai had a robust 27% growth in numbers as its domestic sales stood at 31,501 units against 24,754 units in March last year. The company said this was its highest monthly sales since it started operations in India.
Tata Motors, the third biggest carmaker, also had a double-digit growth as its passenger vehicle sales increased 17% to 27761 units from 23,649 units in March last year. Sales of the Tata Nano stood at 4,710 units, the company said, adding that its Indigo range recorded its highest-ever numbers in a month.
General Motors’ also saw its highest-ever monthly sales as the company sold 11,330 units, showing a growth of 126.5%. The company has been gaining in numbers after the launch of the Beat, which sold 4,508 units in March.
Ford, that launched its first compact Figo in March, saw an immediate jump in sales as its volumes were up 203% at 9,478 units, against 3,127 units in March last year. “The launch of Figo is the start of a transformed Ford in India, and a true reflection of our commitment to delivering world-class products,” Ford India president and MD Michael Boneham said.
Toyota too had a good growth in March and the company said people bought new vehicles as they expected prices to go up in April, when new emission norms would push up prices. The company’s sales increased 90% and Sandeep Singh, Toyota India Deputy MD, said, “The increase in sales for the month of March can also be attributed to the hike in prices that have come into effect from April 1, 2010 because of increase in input costs, the implementation of Euro IV and the increase in local road tax and local sales tax.”
Toyota increased the price of Innova by Rs 20,000-23,000, Corolla sedan by Rs 5,000-14,000 and the Fortuner SUV by Rs 10,000.

March Sales Figures- Auto Industry on a Roll

Hi Folks- posting an article which gives indicative numbers of March sales, will have detailed numbers by someone for sure, but seeing the numbers its clear that we are experiencing a boom in the auto industry in india.

Auto cos post record annual sales
MUMBAI: Sales of cars and two-wheelers continued to rise in March despite recent price hikes and partial rollback of stimulus package, helping market leaders Maruti and Hero Honda to record sales in 2009-10.

Hyundai Motors, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, General Motors, Ford, Fiat and TVS Motor too reported record annual sales and a surprising two-digit growth in March on Thursday, thanks to aggressive marketing and discounts.

Aggressive dealer push and discount offers plus the attraction of higher depreciation benefits ensured strong sales in March despite a 2% jump in excise duty, fuel price hike and rising interest rates, auto financiers say.

This may have pushed the total car sales in Asia’s third-largest market to 2 million in 2009-10, the best year so far for the country’s car industry. In the first 11 months till February end, passenger car sales in the country stood at 1.75 million.

A line of new vehicles in the market including Tata Nano, Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Ritz and K-series Estilo, Fiat Punto and Honda Jazz, availability of cheap loans and the excise duty cut ensured huge demand for cars throughout the year.

Most auto companies also stretched their dealership networks to non-urban markets during the year to ride the surge in rural demand. “The strong performance is largely due to new products,” said Pawan Goenka, president (automotive and farm equipment), Mahindra & Mahindra, which reported its highest monthly sales in March. Higher exports indicate that there is a revival of markets globally too, he added.

Maruti-Suzuki posted a rather subdued 8% increase in domestic sales in March, while its total sales in the fiscal year rose 21% to 8.7 lakh units.

Ford’s first compact , Figo, has got a rousing welcome in the market, helping the US carmaker to record a 203% year-on-year jump in its March sales with 9,478 units. “The launch (of Figo) has transformed Ford in India,” said Michael Boneham, president and MD, Ford India. “As we remain committed to redefining the Ford brand in India, we expect this momentum to continue,” he added.

General Motors India, which recently rolled out Beat compact and Cruze sedan, too saw its sales more than double in March. Company vice-president P Balendran attributed the impressive sales to increased distribution network and Chevrolet cashless ownership offer.

Tata Motors too recorded its highest ever sales in 2009-10 by selling a total of 6.42 lakh units including commercial vehicles, the company said in a statement. The sale of its passenger vehicles increased 17% during the year. Hyundai Motor India, the second largest carmaker reported its highest domestic sales in March with 31,501 units, it said in a statement. Its super hatch i20 has proved a big success for the Korean carmaker.

With more new cars, including Volkwagen’s Polo compact hitting the Indian roads, vehicle sales are expected to stay healthy in the coming months.

Most automakers are investing or planning to invest in new production lines because their existing plants are running in full capacity.

When govt talk so much about conserving the fuel etc, time to give tax relaxation for this I think.

Or do we already have one?

And look at this Fortuner. No competitor can even stand near.

Logan sales compared to last year same month is almost 1/3rd. Hope the new plans of shortening the Logan helps then to increase the sales.

Aveo & Optra still selling

And a Diesel heart to the Beat should make this chart even green.

I guess they overproduced in Feb so compensating for it in March. Also the Euro IV changes on the engine might have to do something with it.

On the Fortuner all I can do is No competitor can get close to that number. Toyota has its cash register ringing to full glory
