General Motors (GM) is recalling 1.3 million small cars in North America because of a power steering problem that has been linked to 14 crashes.
The firm said four models were affected - the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, Pontiac Pursuit and Pontiac 4.

It said the fault meant that at low speeds "greater steering effort may be required", but that the cars could still be "safely controlled".
GM blamed the fault on a supplier partially owned by Toyota.
GM vice chairman Bob Lutz told the BBC at the Geneva Motor show: "This is a case where, yes, we would blame a partially Toyota-owned supplier."
Mr Lutz said the supplier had not met "all requirements for reliability and durability".

"So we will have to see who takes financial responsibility," he said. "But this is a risk you sometimes take when you buy a complete system from a supplier."
Complaints
GM said it had told the US car safety regulator - the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) - about the recall on Monday when it finished an investigation that started last year.

The NHTSA itself had been investigating the problem since 27 January after receiving more than 1,100 complaints.

The recall covers the 2005 to 2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 to 2010 Pontiac G5 sold in the US.

In addition, it includes the 2005 to 2006 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada, and the 2005 to 2006 Pontiac G4 sold in Mexico.

The GM recall comes as Toyota is continuing to call back more than eight million cars around the world following accelerator and braking problems.

I found this funny :D

Has everyone gone mad? What is happening out there? First Toyota comes crashig down (whether you admit it or not), and now this.

I think all manufactures are announcing recall if they there is trouble in US.I think all manufactures are afraid because of the steps taken against Toyota by the government, so they are announcing recall before the US dep announce any issues.

From the beginning I strongly suspect more of economic politics than the real fact.

There's no end to the recalls now. When Toyota, Honda and then Suzuki announced recalls, everyone thought the typical American brand would shine and regain some of its lost glory. And then comes this news! Ford & Chevy still seem to be a tad bit better, in current times.

What the...! Is this some kind of a recall season out there??!

If so many cars are being recalled in that part of the world, I am seriously concerned - how come not much of a recall happening in other parts? Are manufacturers hiding under the carpet of lax consumer laws, throwing accountability to the winds?

(I know, we have seen a recall by a few manufacturers in the Indian context too - but look at the sheer volume of recalls in one country vs rest of the world!)

the laws of land force these companies to be proactive in issuing recalls. It may be missing in India. Besides, We Indians have a habit of making do with anything we have. If we have a faulty power steering, we tame it and learn to live with it. Not ram into another car :)

Lol I loved that comment.

If you ask me, these problems always existed in cars but the US Government's response to Toyota seems to be making manufacturers a little extra careful. I doubt if its such a coincidence that all cars suddenly have recall worthy issues.

Its the same as the Battery Recall a few years back
The first one was Dell and then Apple, Toshiba, all had to recall. Basically most of these get their accessories from the same vendors hence problem in one means problems with many more. The same could be possible in this case also
