Stunning car. If it had the right engine, I could see myself picking this up for 15L if and when its finally available.

However, the design could have been a little more svelte. The waist-line seems quite high, and with the overall shortness of the car it looks a little bulky.

I will eat my hat if Audi is able to price it at 10 Lakhs ex-showroom in India

Brand dilution not in the sense that a hatchback is inferior in any way.

I was referring to the prospect of it being under-equipped for the 4 rings that it displays up front. Even at 10L, i sense that the engines might be paltry (tax breaks on low capacity engines) to equip the car with leather interiors and maintain an Audi-ish air of luxury, or even worse, vice-versa.

For a hot hatch, I'd rather wait an see what Renault does in the near future (Autocar claims this is a possibilty). Imagine if we could have the Renault Clio V6 for about 14 L

German demand is forcing Audi to produce this compact hatch. S class sales have suffered greatly on the market in Europe. People (including rich ones) want to have smaller cars because of their environemntal consciousness.

BTW the Clio V6 is a terrible car. It handles very badly.

Sure. The Clio was an extreme example. I was hoping for a beefed up Megane maybe

I'd love to have one!

No offence guys but expecting an Audi for ten lakhs? Lol! I'd be very very surprised if its below fifteen. Same goes for an A-Class or a 1-Series.

This would be 15L on road minimum. Even then it could possibly find some takers.

The FWD Clio is much better. A number of (mature) people who race had some unpleasant handling experiences claiming they made a fool of themselves with the V6.

The new Megane is very good.

I am looking forward to beefing up the A1. It will be quite a good car.

doesnt the A1 share the same platform as the polo?
if would be sensible to assemble the audi in india itself so that it can be priced in such a way that it can find takers.

I think it will give company to the Fiat 500 and the VW Beetle. If that is the case, there's no point in getting the A1 to India. And if its not, expect a stripped down A1 at 10-15 lacs.No point there too, except the snob value.

Don't know about the Fiat 500, as this was a marketing freak with no justificiation whatsoever for its high price other than the ridiculous label "lifestyle". Cheap, small car at ridiculous, inflated price is no sort of lifestyle that should make sense to anyone.

The Beetle is really a modified Golf, and modified to have less room inside, but this is much more of a choice thing; like that shape and buy that model.

I can't believe that Audi is going to be aiming at the mass market, competing with the likes of the Swift, especially with Fabia and Polo here. It should be expensive, but that expense should be justified by its specification and quality.

According to Jeremy Clarkson, the Audi A1 is a VW Golf with an Audi badge.

So if we dont get the Golf, its probably better to get the A1.

Hope it comes out with a lower price tag though.

--- wasn't/isn't the A3 the Audi version of the Golf?

I get increasingly confused about which VAG product is which!

I'd have hoped that the A1 would be quite a lot smaller than the Golf. It may be a hatchback, but it is a family car, not a small car.

The previous poster didn't say that Jeremy Clarkson doesn't know anything about cars.

Well, Clarkson is the best automotive journalist ive seen so far and what if he knows nothing abt cars, he reviews a car in a way, that u find the car either:

1.Good but uncool(the Koreans and Japs)
2.Bad and uncool(GM and Chevy)
3.Good and cool(Fiat 500, VW Golf GTi)
4.Bad and cool(Alfa Romeo, Citroen)

Id prefer Clarkson's technique rather than a guy who goes on and on abt a car and knows everything.
Id probably fall asleep in the latter's show.
