This has been reported in Bloomberg Businessweek Us Edition also. It said that at 148 cars this was the BIGGEST one time car sale in Asia! Initially when the sales clerk got the order, he thought it must be a joke

After 150 Mercedes, Aurangabad citizens chase 101 BMWs

AURANGABAD: Close on the heels of creating a record with a single transaction for 150 Mercedes-Benz cars worth Rs 65 crore, Aurangabad has done it again.

This time a group of like-minded people, including industrialists, builders, and doctors among other professionals, from the city have come together to book 101 BMW cars in one day.

"In all, 101 cars were booked with Bawaria Motors in Pune on Saturday. These luxurious cars include 50-60 3-Series cars, 15 5-Series cars, 10 X-5 and three X-6 series cars. We will get the delivery in January next," Pankaj Agrawal, a businessman who encouraged other members to join in the purchase of cars, said.

Apart from the discount that could be availed due to the mass booking, another reason for the deal was to bring Aurngabad on the international map, he said.

"We want to show the world that Aurangabad is no more backward but ahead of metropolitan cities," Agrawal said.

Last month, the iconic Mercs had distributed 150 cars including 13 S-, 74 E-, 39 C-, 6 GL- and 18 M-Class cars in Aurangabad on October 14.
I am going to visit Aurangabad soon

BMW deal not yet confirmed.

Pankaj Agarwal confirmed that no BMW's have been booked until now & he has not even contacted any BMW dealer. He's still in the process of forming a group first. The other news articles are hence premature. No paper work has even started. Bmw has not even discussed til date.

Heard about the BMW Deal in the ET from a friend and went . Then the timing of the news sank in and had a suspicion that maybe it was the result of licking that BMW got from Merc. Thanks manishk for clearing the air. Even the TOI has issued a clarification on it in today's edition.

Looks like, Aurangabad is where the stars are

Re: Its raining Mercs - 115 Mercedes booked at Aurangabad

Reviving an old thread.

Merc owners in Aurangabad who had booked in groups are wary to drive their Mercs on the potholed Aurangabad roads. The owners are forced to park their prized beauties in the garages for the fear of getting damaged if driven on the potholed roads. The roads are so bad that it has forced these high end luxury car owners to chuck their cars for a cheaper siblings in their garages. Some owners have gone ahead and sold their vehicles too.

This means apart from owning luxury cars, you need to own some roads to drive too.

More details in the link.

That's really funny godhlur
Horse before the cart? I wish all of us could focus on fixing fundamentals before jumping into mercs, alas the examples set before us utterly bad.

Goes to show there is fairly shallow depth behind all the ritz and shine, and over focus on the superficial surface not to mention optimism without focus on substance. Our govt takes the lead and all their cronies and related businesses and get quick businessmen taking all us straight shooters back in time.

Re: Its raining Mercs - 115 Mercedes booked at Aurangabad

The road inside and around Aurangabad city have deteriorated to such an extent and it is true that these hapless owners of Mercs have no option but to park it than drive out.

It was definitely better 2 years before but having visited the place back to back in gap of 3-6 months over the last few years, I can say that the roads are definitely not "Merc-Worthy"

Group purchases..is it still in vogue?

A few years back, group purchases were the rage at least in this part of India and there were stories making the rounds on deals for >100 luxury cars of a particular brand being made at jaw dropping prices. Then came reports that luxury manufacturers were frowning upon such mass deals and they wanted to protect their exclusivity. Sounded thin, since numbers count.
So what is the scene now? Are group purchases still in? Are manufacturers of luxury cars ready and willing to play ball?

Bulk sales do still take place, not sure about Group sales, but don't see why it would have changed. Say a group of people want to buy luxury cars and reach out to Mercedes, BMW and AUDI. I'm sure these guys will offer mouthwatering discounts for a group sale since there is so much pressure on each company to meet its sales targets.

It does'nt really diminish exclusivity since its going to the end user and not as a resale (immediately), and at the end of the day, everyone wants a sale.
