Note from Mod : A detailed Test Report of the F10 BMW 525d has been uploaded here. Please continue the discussion over on the review thread. This thread is closed.

BMW is sure going all out to make an impression. This isn't a press conference in a corner of a Hotel's banquet hall. It's a full-fledged pavilion, akin to being at a high-end Auto Show!

The new BMW 5 series will be launched in the coming minutes. Until then, a brief preview live from the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai.

Great Pictures.

Are these Ex showroom prices? Any news on 520d?

The world's best 4 door car is here finally :) Bye Bye W212. But I must say BMW India could have selected better alloys.

Rehaan, Any idea when do the CKD cars launch? and the 530D? And do the 535i's in CBU format get delivered right away?

I have to say, I LOVE the new BMW design philosophy. So much better than the quirky E60 5 series (and the currently sold 3). I liked the new 5 even more in the flesh. Interiors are top notch, as one would expect, though the doors didn't have that classic Merc & BMW heaviness. It sure didn't feel like a "tijori" (vault). The 535's driver seat was bliss, lower back support especially nice (and cushiony). I had a brief moment on the backseat and space isn't all that impressive. It seemed just ok. Interior part quality was astoundingly high. The car is loaded with tech & gizmos...8 speed tranny across the range, regenerative braking (a la KERS in Formula 1?) and more. However, I am disappointed with BMW moving to electric steering. The best part about the current 5series is the nirvana steering. Sheer bliss, amazing feedback and simply pure BMW.

The Merc E250d and the BMW 525d (both entry diesels) will form the majority of sales. To gauge fierce their rivalry is, consider the pricing : A mere 3,000 rupees separates the two (Merc E250 starts at 39.87L).

BMW put on a heck of a show today; I mean, they really were firing all cylinders. The Pavillion was tastefully done up and, as the opening post reads, feels more like an auto expo in itself. As always, it was great to bump into the 7. My favorite luxo-sedan.

No 4 cylinder 520d on offer at the moment; the range starts with 6 cylinders (523i, 525d) itself.

I'll hold comment on that, until a full test.

The launch included all models, the CKD & the CBU. Mr. Peter Kronschnabl (President) categorically stated that dealers start accepting orders from today.

Hey Rehaan, where you there? I was also there for the event. Now at Air Port going back home. From the angle of unveiling photo it seems we were sitting close. I was in the first raw, second from right! Where you were seated? I'll post my photos later.

Awesome car! An 8-speed gearbox is the first in India I think. Way to go BMW!

I Checked out the car some weeks back in EU. Which is why I'm so badly in love with it, Infact a lot of negatives were said on how it looks on this forum for which I never really replied because I thought it's best people first see it in real and then comment and I think this is as good a 4 door car one needs. But do test it and you will know why a die hard Mercedes guy / family like mine has crossed the line and moved into Munich.

Truly speaking while I love the 7, I feel the new 5 really makes it pointless to go for the 7 unless it is for the extra space / features which BMW India can also offer in 5 considering the 535i variant is in CBU form.

GTO, Reason I asked about the CKD (esp the 530D) is that my dealer here claims that will arrive much later around August, and he mostly has been right as I was the first guy to break on Team-Bhp that the new 5 will launch in April.

Also GTO any information on the alloys offered? Don't you think the ones in standard form really look bland for a brand / car of this kind?

Great Pics Rehaan :)

I like the current 5 design & atleast in the pics the new 5 doesn't look as good as the current one. But will wait till I see it in person, anyways new models help in refreshing an existing range & the new design often takes some time getting used to.

looks rather "Volvoish" in a good way though.
looks much better than the rather flashy 5 .
this is more of an understated look.
The interior color choice is excellent as usual and as usual the rear space /legroom is a let down.

The new BMW 5 Series: Description in Brief

The sixth generation of BMW’s immensely successful four-door stands out through modern aesthetics in design, conveys all of the Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of BMW and offers unparalleled luxury in the upper midrange segment.

The sophisticated aesthetics and dynamic looks of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan are the result of perfectly balanced proportions. Again in the typical style of the brand, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan boasts of a long and contoured engine compartment lid, short overhangs, a coupé-like flowing roofline as well as the longest wheelbase in the segment. The charismatic flair of the upright front section and the BMW kidney grill inclined slightly forward from certain perspectives, the stylish elegance of the side view and the muscular sportiness of the rear end all come together in typical BMW design language to provide an outstanding look of style and supremacy.

Within the interior, horizontal surfaces and exciting lines create a truly generous and harmonious ambience. The clear structure of the cockpit enhances the high level of driver orientation, while the stylish, modern design of the interior is further refined by top-quality material and tastefully composed colour combinations.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan is entering the market with the world’s first straight-six petrol engine with Twin Power Turbo, High Precision Injection and Valvetronic (225 kW/306 hp) in the BMW 535i as well as straight-six petrol engine in the BMW 523i (150 kW/204 hp). The latest generation of straight-six diesels featuring an all-aluminium crankcase and common-rail direct injection develop 180 kW/245 hp in BMW 530d and 150 kW/204 hp in BMW 525d.

Eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard with the BMW 523i and the BMW 525d. Eight Speed Sports Automatic transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel is standard feature on the BMW 535i and the BMW 530d. With its innovative gear set configuration, a unique level of inner efficiency and optimised weight, the eight-speed automatic transmission combines outstanding gearshift comfort, dynamic performance and efficiency of the highest level.

The combination of a double track arm front axle and the Integral-V rear axle ensures supreme driving dynamics and motoring comfort all in one. Further efficiency is provided by Electric Power Steering (EPS) including Servotronic as standard feature for the first time in the BMW 5 Series. The clearly structured cockpit and intuitive controls enhance Sheer Driving Pleasure in typical BMW style to an even higher level, at the same time underlining the sophisticated ambience within the passenger compartment of the new BMW 5 Series. The driver-oriented cockpit in Black Panel technology, the multifunction steering wheel featured as standard, the two highly functional steering wheel columns, and the separation of driving and comfort functions further enhance the feeling of supremacy at the wheel.

Ah, coincidence. I was there too. Sat right next to gto and rehaan. im also in the airport, about to board the plane back home.

cheers,

jay

Great effort by BMW with that pavillion !! Have an invite for Sunday's event, so I'm gonna check out the car myself before deciding, but no, it is definitely a step backwards from the fabulous E60 and my wonderful 3 :) Could have given better rims though. Great pricing !!
