im sure even a 1.4 90bhp engine in altis would be no slowcoach. yes it may not excite the socks of you like cruze or laura but definately be a sturdy and economical(really economical) car like octavia. plus one gets all the comfort, quality and status that comes with a toyota. this car will surely be a hit whether its a 1.4 or 1.6 or whatever.

YEP
most probably it IS the 1.4l D-4D engine.
Otherwise how 21km/l???
Well everyone's forgetting the skoda octavia tdi. Didn't it give 90bhp and a fantastic mileage figure. If its a more bigger capacity engine then a miracle.
21 km/l ARAI? then an onroad highway figure of 18km/l+ a given.
ROCKER OF THE SEGMENT> Quality revolution.
edit:Zero cool, seems you have written about the octavia before i could enter my text.fast posting..

Definitely I feel the test numbers are for the Etios engine and not the Altis.
Nothing else explains this better, unless as stated before by others, Toyota is up to something.

Its not a cosmetic upgrade. Its the next generation model, i tend to agree that it doesn't look that revolutionary but it certainly is the next generation corolla. A lot of people might not know this, but the previous corolla was also called the corolla altis is may markets back in the day.

I don't thikn Etios development is anywhere close to the stage of getting the ARAI mileage certification. It's got to be Corolla, the diesel version of which is expected to get launched in June/July anyway.

Its going to be really interesting to see how they price this - I can't imagine it being too expensive an engine to manufacture. But then again, Toyota charges nearly a lakh for its CNG kit, so I don'e expect this to be much cheaper than a Laura, despite being half a segment smaller.

The pricing would be the key here. The chauffeur driven would surely be pleased with the oil burner.
Even carwale reported about the same 1.4l unit powering in the Altis.

The 1.4 D-4D produces 89 Bhp and more importantly 205 Nm of max twist at 2800rpm. So, that will be sprightly enough for the Toyota Corolla Altis considering that the 1.8 Liter T-i petrol mill pumps out about 170 Nm. Mounting the 1.4 D-4D on the Altis shouldn't be too much of an hassle as the Spanish version of the Corolla Altis currently comes with the 1.4 D-4D. Corolla Sedán - Especificaciones - Coches y Automóviles Toyota and this is what will come to India too, the combined fuel consumption of 4.6 liters per 100 km being the dead giveaway.

Cheers,

Jay

1.4 D-4D gives Corolla a top speed of 175 kmph and a 0-100 of 12 sec.

We team-bhpians read too much into engine specs. But IMO, a common man is not so much bothered about these intricacies as long as the car is reliable, decently drivable in traffic and gives good FE. The corolla 1.4D would have all the above qualities.

If engine spec is the prime base for a car's sellability, where are the magnums or cruzes or getz primes today?

Innova with just 102 bhp (??) BS-3 engine sold like hot cakes. Scorpio with 120 bhp sells more than safari with 140 bhp. BHP and CC is not the beginning/end of a car, not at least in India.

If indeed, that is true, it will set the segment on fire. This is the true Toyota. Pricing will be the key. People will be a bit skeptical paying 16L OTR, for a 1.4D as against 2.0 of Cruze/Laura.

Infractions: 0/3 (12)

this may be a bit of a game changer.
an already strong car just got stronger

provided the 1.4 diesel has good torque in low gear, i think it will be rock solid.
toyota anyway enjoys huge equity in India and a hard earned reputation for reliable, good quality vehicles.
this will simply add to their arsenal and enable them to re-energize the brand with the diesel driven target segment. Im sure there will be loads of takers.
it will need to be priced smartly though - slightly below the Cruze, given the size of the car + the size of the engine itself.
