Just checked out Toyota UK site for info on 1.4l D4D engine.

The same engine is working under Toyota Auris. The engine produces 89bhp of power. Top speed of Auris is 175 kmp/h and 0-62 mph comes up in 11.9 seconds. The best part is that Auris weighs 1310 kilos where as Corolla Altis weighs only about 1200 kilos. The engines surely seems very impressive.

More skoda competitors are surely desirable in this segment (with D). However, I wonder whether Toyota with its choice of D engine can match up in the power stakes to the immediate competition (Laura / Cruze).

This diesel car will come in around July atleast to the showrooms and deliveries shortly thereafter ~ september timeframe. it could be the 1.6 engine if i believe my sources right.

1.4L D4-D with 89 BHP on tap with 205 Nm torque may sound interesting for any car in the price renge under Rs.10 Lacs, but not anything above that. For the performance will be too dull (even by Corolla Altis standards). I still think Toyota need bit bigger engine in India 7 this one could be more suited for Etios sedan.

1.4L Diesel with ~90 BHP & 210 Nm torque is what I dream for a Manza Dicor, if such version is ever envisaged. Any takers for Dicor90 .

Skoda Octavia is a 90bhp car. Was there any issue with its sales or power?

I know that, but what is the engine size 1.9L TDI (with 210 Nm torque, somewhat similar figures), isn't... but, game has moved on during the last decade (infact the Laura produces 205 Nm torque & 110 BHP power).
I have voted for smaller engine with turbocharger, etc. in another topic & under the same topic I have posted that I feel that the engine will be 1.6L instead.

But, if Toyota (TKML) goes for 1.4L, with a detuned one in Etios, to save costs (instead of hiking capacity), few enthusiasts will not be too pleased & would crib for bigger engine.

1.6D @ 90 BHP should be a decent spec (I wont say too good). We need to look at the torque speed curve to make a judgement.

But still with 21 FE and an Altis badge, I am sure it will rock.

Cruze 150BHP, 320Nm.

Not sure 89 and 205 will sell in the hyper competitive market. also diesel would be at least 10% more costlier. the specs have to match if not better to generate volume.

We team-bhpians read too much into engine specs. But IMO, a common man is not so much bothered about these intricacies as long as the car is reliable, decently drivable in traffic and gives good FE. The corolla 1.4D would have all the above qualities.

If engine spec is the prime base for a car's sellability, where are the magnums or cruzes or getz primes today?

Innova with just 102 bhp (??) BS-3 engine sold like hot cakes. Scorpio with 120 bhp sells more than safari with 140 bhp. BHP and CC is not the beginning/end of a car, not at least in India.

Well said - where are the roads for common man to do 100 kmph (mind you, we BHPians are also common men).

With 99% of drive being at 30kmph, companies which aspire to excell at needs and do a decent jobs of wants have a better chance of making products mega hits.

800 when it was launched, Altis and NHC in recent years are prime examples who have done this keeping the market conditions in mind.

If Toyota is bringing the 1.4, the sales team will have a tough time making one understand why 140bhp is better than 90 bhp.

Only the Laura L&K has the 140bhp engine.

Jetta and other Laura variants have the 110bhp mill. So Toyota should be pretty well placed with a ~ 90bhp spec.

The rental cab market will relish this model. More so if a stripped down lower end variant is launched.
