I would not have been worried if they had used the Innova's engine. Even if the had tuned it down a bit it for higher FE it would still be the epitome of reliability like all other Toyotas.
This has been many times over. Today you have a 1.8 running a Skoda Superb. This 1.4 L D4D engine makes close to 90 horses and 20 kgm of torque (way more than the petrol). This engine is by mo means overstressed - And with all the wizardry(hydraulic lash adjusters, whatnot) and testing going on, I'm sure this is the least of anyone's concerns.Take it for granted it will be bullet-proof reliable for atleast 2-3 lakh kms. All Toyotas are built for that.especially the engines. The thing that is hurting everyone is - why should I shell out 14-15 lakhs OTR for a car with a 1.4 litre engine ? That may prove to be Toyota's undoing but it will not matter in the long run.

ROTFL.. Terrifying accelerator maybe, but compared to a Mahindra tractor. With 6-speed forward gears(maybe the surprise package!) may not be a yawnmobile.

According to ACI - the pricing is revealed.
The base version starts at Rs. 10.95lakh and tops at Rs 13.75 lakh all ex showroom Delhi.

Assuming the base version to be J, thats almost a 93K increase in ex-showroom from the 1.8L petrol (1.8J is 10.02L ex showroom Delhi). Steep for a 1.4 engine, i must say.

I guess it would still sell due to the brand and efficiency. I am expecting Corolla sales to cross 2K mark soon and leave every other Sedan (Cruze,Laura,Civic et al) in the dust.

Toyota Launches the Corolla Altis Diesel in India

Delhi, July 21, 2010
  • World class D-4D Common Rail Diesel technology
  • First-in-segment, newly developed 6-Speed Manual Transmission
  • Best-in-class mileage of 21.43kpl as certified by an accredited Testing Agency
  • Flat torque and low NVH
  • Competitively priced between 10,95,000 lakhs and 13,75,000 lakhs (Ex-S/R, Delhi)
Delhi, July 21, 2010 :- Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. (TKM) today announced the launch of the Corolla Altis Diesel in India. The latest offering from TKM has been developed keeping in mind the distinctive requirements of the Indian customer with the basic concept of 'optimum balance of performance and economy'. India is the first Asian country to get the BSIV Corolla Altis Diesel.
The Corolla Altis is available with a newly developed 1.4L in-line 4-cylinder D-4D Common Rail Diesel Engine that generates a peak power of 88.4 PS and a peak torque of 205 Nm. Toyota's D-4D technology also used in the Innova, Fortuner, Prado and Land Cruiser 200 has earned a reputation the world-over for its high quality, durability and reliability.

The D-4D engine in the Corolla Altis is complemented by a 6-Speed Manual Transmission - a 'first-in-segment' offering ? to provide flat torque that would mean lesser gear shifting, leading to better fuel efficiency. The car has registered a best-in-class mileage of 21.43 km/l as certified by a test agency.

The Corolla Altis Diesel gets a differentiating sporty mesh grille, better aerodynamic characteristics, and the lowest NVH and best ground clearance in its segment. The car is available in seven colours - Silver Mica Metallic, Champagne Mica Metallic, Dark Red Mica Metallic, White Pearl Mica, Light Blue Mica Metallic, Super White and Black Mica.

The Corolla Altis Diesel comes in three manual transmission grades D-4D J, D-4D G and D-4D GL with competitive price tags between 10, 95, 000 and 13, 75, 000, ex-showroom Delhi. Bookings open today.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Nakagawa (MD, TKM) said, "The Corolla DNA that has been handed down for 40 years is now in its 10th Generation with over 35 million happy customers worldwide. The car made its debut in India in 2003, and now has more than 60,000 satisfied owners in the country. As part of our long-term commitment to bring the best of Toyota's technology to India, we are very proud to introduce the Corolla Altis Diesel. The Corolla Altis Diesel has Toyota's proven D-4D technology, and I am happy to say will have the best fuel efficiency in its segment. "

Mr. Sandeep Singh (Deputy Managing Director-Marketing, TKM) said, "Apart from the spacious interiors and luxury features of the Corolla Altis, the diesel variant has the best fuel efficiency, lowest NVH and the best ground clearance in its segment. Our target customers are individuals who are business professionals, in the 35 to 45 age group looking for a perfect balance of performance and economy. The launch of the Corolla Altis Diesel has enhanced Toyota's line-up in India, and we are looking at consolidating our leadership position in the C-segment with a sales target of 10,500 units for the Corolla Altis in 2010."

Steep, but a gradient that it will climb ultimately .
Thanks for the pricing details! A bit overpriced. If they had priced it along side the petrol, may have made more sense. But then, may have also killed the petrol's market altogether. But the 1.4 litre engine despite its merits may not be so convincing , since most Indians think 1.4 L engine = compact car.If it had been a 1.8 making 90 bhp, it will probably have sold more , and people would have said "seriously underpowered", but it's a 1.8 so I don't 'feel' cheated.

Clever advertising..6 speed forward gears + great FE = sure seller!!!

Now that is classic, classic Toyota for you. Please everyone, no need to please anyone too much in particular, and p*** off no one. Balance of performance and economy may be an overstatement , we will wait for the Testers to get their hands on it, please. That's why toyota sells.

Thanks Siddy boy for all the details.

What's more, Sid (and team-bhp) are the first to cover this in all this detail. Just to
check, I looked at ACI, Zigwheels, BS Motoring, Overdrive and Motoroids(who've gotten pretty good with their scoop stuff of late!). None of them have coverage like this...
Welcome to breaking news from team-bhp. Sid takes(or is it makes?) the ice-cream (since he is the established scoop specialist!).So kudos as in order...

Indeed - Awesome coverage guys! The torgue is what really matters for most of the city driving and TKM seem to have pulled off a coup here!

I dont think this is really going to bring down the recent good numbers of Cruze/Laura though but eat into the petrol sibling and its peers. Oh boy - what happens to Civic now?

The prices ranging from 10.95 to 13.75 laks. Do I see another variant being launched a few months down the line below 10 lakhs barrier for the taxi segment.

I will not be surprised if the corolla volumes double from the current avg of 800 units to 1500-1600 units a month.

OT: Toyota, If you are reading this. Get the Ethios sedan with an Auto box, spec it better than city and price it lower than City. You will overtake Honda in all segments below 15 lakhs.

CKD Camry, should be the next move from them. But this might happen only after the second plant becomes operational.

First plant might dedicated to MUV/SUVs and the second one for the Cars (Ethios hatch/sedan, corolla, camry)

Unbelievable... . Most modern diesel engines will produce this much of torque. Even the old octavia diesel produces > 19 kgm torque between 1600-3500 rpm.
Visit this page to find of torque versus rpm curve for most the diesel cars

For the top end version, the 1.8GL is 13.05L ex-Delhi and the top end of 1.4D is 13.75 ex-delhi. For this 70K difference, apart from the diesel engine, Toyota has ripped off some features that are available in the petrol sibling. From the specs in the Toyota site, I can see that Lumbar Support is totally missing (the 1.8GL had Electric Lumbar Support) and the Seat Height Adjustment is manual in the 1.4D (the 1.8GL had Electric Seat Height Adjustment).

Any more features ripped off the 1.4D?
