Did Hyundai ever offer a Santro ECO (lpg) with Automatic transmission ?

We talk about diesel automatic hatchback being a unexplored but promising segment for obvious reasons.

But this car mayhave just be the next best thing. I know the AT Santro was dropped after the i-10 came out.

I dont think they did. How about WagonR? I think the auto option was stopped before Duo was introduced, wasn't it?

Mpower, I have a feeling it has to do with power.

Due to the AT boxes in Santro and i-10 there is a substantial drop in performance.

With LPG this is even more.

I am guessing that is also the reason that the i20 1.2L Kappa does not have AT option.

In India underpowered AT and low FE is a big no no.

No, the Santro ECO was available only with manual transmission.

What about the i10 AT? Is it available with the CNG option.

@vid6639 - you wrote "Due to the AT boxes in Santro and i-10 there is a substantial drop in performance." Kindly elaborate what you mean by drop in performance. Do you mean that cars with AT have lower performance compared to MT ones? What is the technical reason for it?

@Scorpman - I am not aware of i10 AT with CNG option.

They didnt. I think even the LPG version was launched as a reluctant response to the Wagon R LPG.

Once i happened to drove a santro petrol AT & there isn't any power or pickup. so as vid6639 said i have the same feeling that there will be a huge power loss with LPG AT.

@ScorpMan
No CNG in AT i10.

I guess it has to do with torque. Petrol outputs less torque compared to diesel. LPG's torque is even less. That's why, loss in peformance. What say?

there is CNG in i10 fitted by dealer (as is the practice).

However, its only for IRDE engine and not for kappa on which CNG is fitted. And AT box for i10 is available only in Kappa engine so no AT with CNG in i10.

IRDE Engine - CNG
Kappa Engine - No CNG

IRDE Engine - No AT
Kappa Engine - AT available.

I think the main reason why diesel hatchbacks are not launched with A/T is that, people who buy diesel hatchbacks are more concerned about running costs. A/T will reduce FE and will result in more running cost.

Simhi: There is not a substantial drop in performance as claimed. However, there is a performance issue with Santro AT. Firstly, it is a four speed as opposed to the 5 Speed in the manual. Hence there is some compromise in the gear selection as compared to the 5 speed MT.

However, the issue that generally affects all traditional ATs is that there is no mechanical linkage between the engine and gearbox. The power is transferred by the torque converter that churns the AT fluid. Hence there is always certain amount of power loss in an AT as compared to the manual.

The new generation DSG type gearboxes actually have a clutch and hence mechanical contact from engine to gearbox.

My theory is that people are not buying AT due to low FE. LPG/CNG can compensate for that.

I understand there is a power deficit but you just have to mash that pedal into the carpet to get going. :D

Not anymore. All new non-DSG ATs have lockup mechanisms.

Santro AT was available in the past. When I purchased my Santro Xing XG Manual, at that time it was available, in 3-speed ratio. But, it was slow due to old AT tech & also heavy on the fuel. Moreover, AT was Rs.50K premium over my car & Rs.30K premium over the top-end (XS) at that time.

However, I have not heard anything about Eco (CNG/LPG) AT model. It could be a aftermarket fitment by the seller (delaer/ previous owner). Please check whether the RC is updated for the same, & go for the LPG one as the power loss is negligible in LPG as compared to CNG, IMO.

Please check again. Santro was 4 speed AT from day one. It was the Marutis that were 3 speed.
