GM to launch Chevrolet MPV by end 2011

According to Autocar India GM India is planning to launch Wuling Hongguang MPV (CN100).

Here is the actual news.
Quote:
On the back of the newly structured GM India, in which Chinese auto giant Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) has 50 percent ownership, a whole raft of new models is expected from Wuling Automobiles, which in turn is a joint venture between GM and SAIC in China. While the initial plan is to launch small commercial vehicles from the Wuling portfolio, GM India is looking at opportunities in the passenger car segment too under the new joint venture. There is a plan to introduce Wuling’s new CN-100 MPV, known as the Hong, Guang and produce it in GM India’s new Talegaon plant in Maharashtra.
Interestingly GM is planning to plonk Fiat's 1.3 MJD first in an MPV. May be they will also have it in "all new Aveo UVA"?

Doesn't it shared Xylo's back end?

its look good.
Seems in INOVA / XYLO segment. Must be cheaper.
But again chinese....
First Rio then GM....
If the GM certified the QC of this car then it may have some future in india.

The design looks too wonky, usual Chinese fare, but better than the ICML Rhino! Could be a low cost alternative to taxi operators.

Looks quite like Innova and Xylo mixed together (I am not too technical). What was interesting is that this MPV can be configured with a 2+2+3 seating arrangement.

And I don't know if I am reading it right "GM is looking at pricing this MPV quite aggressively and a price of around Rs 5-6 lakh is being considered"

I was looking at the parent companies website and found that they have a good lineup of people movers. If GM can make the above MPV a success, I'm sure some more will follow.

Check out the lineup.

Looks more like a minivan from the ground clearance point of view.

It looks good and could be a replacement for the Tavera.

I dont think it will be cheap after all those duties levied on it, the RIO itself available for 6lac + and that too in 2wd option. 5-6 lacs is definitly not going to happen.

the big question that comes in my mind is that did Mahindra copied Xylo's styling from this.. or did the Chinese guys copy the styling from Xylo.. agreed its not exactly similar as is the case in most Chinese designs.. but still.. this does resemble a bit like Xylo to me

Whatever the case maybe, I liked this interiors. The Xylo's interior was not liked by me. It would have been better to have more stylish interiors with a more modern consoles.

Looks better than the Xylo, the Rhino and the Eeco in my opinion. External fit and finish looks good. Dash and steering wheel no great shakes. Mag wheels add to the upmarket looks.

I guess it it proves itself in the market then it could be priced around the earlier Versa price range of 5-6 lacs for the base and mid range variants.

1) Looks are subjective, but IMO, this car already looks outdated. As compared to Innova, this car looks one generation old. I remember that there was a thread of a MPV smaller or one segment lower than Innova called Avanza. Even Avanza looks better. Or for that matter, Tavera has its own identity. This vehicle lacks identity IMO. For typical MPV styling, look at what Europeans are offering, specially from Peugeot and Ford. I am sure that GM will work more on the styling to please Indian customers.

2) Pricing at just Rs. 5-6 lakh is next to impossible unless there is a small motor and a lot of compromises. This vehicle is having size near to Innova, so the pricing will be in range of Rs. 8-10 lakh. 120 bhp version of the RA 420 with better low end grunt is possible considering that fact that this car is a people mover.

3) Its Chinese, so any given day I will doubt its quality. I am not sure if its just the name or image, but I would rather trust Japs and M&M more than chinese product.

4) Noting is known on its dynamics, but somehow after looking at the car I feel its not going to have Innova like dynamics. Success of Innova comes not only from reliability, toyota brand image, but also from the fact that Innova is easy to drive and is car like in handling and ride ( which means more comfortable for passengers and drivers ). This chinese MPV is a bit narrow or may be it looks like that.

On one hand there is Innova and on the other hand there is Xylo. Even Xylo now has made a reasonable image and for sure Xylo is sturdy ( suitable for taxi applications ). A smaller engined Taxi version is also available in Xylo. So this MPV will have to priced right with all the right ingredients to find success.
