From the little knowledge that I have from Tata Safari and Maruti Gypsy they always had rear hatch opening sideway and spare wheel fitted on it. Just think to have a pull-up rear hatch fitted with a spare wheel (of course fully inflated!) and one has to pull is with one hand! It must be the load factor that inspires such designs.

The footstep behind is probably an indication that it is a 5+2 seater with jump seats behind.

Who knows, could it be limited just for the test vehicle only and not as part of production model?

re: Mahindra Testing sub-4 meter XYLO. EDIT : Fresh PICS on Page 38

Hi there, just came across this small caption in the april issue of overdrive.

The mag was doing a feature on the 2011 67th mahindra great escape (rajasthan). And in the report there are a few pics of mahindra scorpios, boleros and thars doing what they do best (offroading). I also happened to notice a red coloured xylo coming down from a sand dune but thought nothing of it thinking it is a full sized 4x4 xylo that was at the mahindra great escape in 2010 as well. But reading the caption of the picture it states " Mini Xylo 4x4 prototype being tested".

this is extremely good news for people wanting a cheap 4x4 vehicle.

Was anyone from team-bhp participating at the event? Can anyone shed some light into this mouth watering possibility?

P.S Guys this is no april fools prank. i have the OD mag hard copy with me

This is the pic published in OD, but I really doubt they will put a naked test mule in the open at a place full of cameras!

This must be a 'regular' Xylo 4x4 test mule.

I think this is a mini xylo 4x4 simply because i seriously doubt that a motor journalist from the 2nd best selling mag in india who personally attended the event would mistake a normal xylo with a short body xylo.

My estimate is that the mini xylo will come with a 3 cylinder engine in the base version retailing for sub 5 lakhs ex showroom. There will be higher models which will have a de-tuned m-hawk engine with rear and four wheel drive.

Well atleast this is what i am hoping for

If 'tyred' right, this could actually look good!
Nice PS job, the tires seem to be of same size atleast looking at the rims, but the wheel well at the rear is huge compared to the front. Possible indication of lowering the chassis.

I just hope that the mini Xylo loses significant amount of weight as well, no point weighing about 100 odd kilos less than the regular one with a smaller engine.

This test mule looks to have bigger shoes than the ones spotted earlier. The mini-Xylo looks good and may create a segment with only the insignificant Premier's Rio would be its competitor.

Wishful thinking: Hope this is as good as a Ford Fusion

Not doubting the journalist's capabilities here, I am guessing its a typo

If M&M tries to keep the whole length (including the spare wheel) below 4 meters to get into lesser tax bracket (engine is less than 1500 cc anyway), we probably can expect a cramped backseat.
Even if the spare wheel is not fitted at the back, if no changes are made for the front portion, the only options to reduce the length will be to remove as much of the rear overhang as possible and reduce the wheelbase. Wheelbase would probably have to be around 2550-2600mm at the most, compared to the existing Xylo wheelbase of 2760mm. That should mean a cramped backseat (2nd row), in comparison to Xylo.

Any idea if Auto transmission will be available in this or introduced in Xylo in the future?

Any updates / rumours about the launch of 4WD Xylo or Mini Xylo yet? How long do they want to keep testing this? Waiting for some other manufacturer to jump the gun, perhaps!

Correct. How about a mini Sumo Grande? Only, this time around, Tata should name the car more imaginatively.

I also wish for the same, but Defenitely not going to happen in the near future. Facelifted safari is the next launch. Then the World LCV/ICV. These are the only current products committed by Tata. Anything other than these will be mere speculation at this point.
