2011 SUZUKI SWIFT

Gen2 Suzuki Swift, EDIT:Caught testing in India, Pics on Pg.15-2011suzukiswift28.jpg
The all new Suzuki Swift will perhaps, undoubtedly be the most important car launch of 2011.
Not only because it will come from the country's numero uno car manufacturer, but perhaps it will replace the first generation of a nameplate thats as strong as the company itself.
Besides, with intense competition from all sides and all manufacturers looking at each other to beat black and blue, with Toyota (Ethios) and Honda (NSC 2CV) joining the fray, it's just the survival of the fittest that counts.
Because, someone rightly said, the winner takes it all.

Today, the swift still sells strongly but is clearly beginning to show its age as compared to its modern competitors. So, in a sea of me too products, does the swift have what it takes to take on the competition?

Lets find out.

Great Pics!!! It certainly looks better than the old swift with front more or less inclined to FABIA looks:thumbs up.
It would again be the great selling Car with Maruti badge on it:D, I hope Maruti provides good inside features as they are present in current competition. Will they be using same engine that are available presently in market or it would be a different one?

Rear is little similar to an i20 and front similar to fabia. well overall a gud design, however this cannot be compared with the current available design. both stand unique. I am waiting to see other changes to swift in indian market

Sid, I hope you have more to add.

Overall it looks like Suzuki has toned down the design. Looks quite ordinary to me.

Is it only skin deep?

Hope Maruti wont compromise with the build quality this time around. Other than that, i bet the Swift is going to rule the segment yet again! :thumbs up

Have you driven this car in India? If you have, thats quite an acheivement considering it was revealed internationally only two weeks back!

EDIT: Saw the below post only after posting this. Request mods to delete the post, if required. Thanks.

Whole lotta things to come. Request to all members to kindly post comments after the writeup is over in about 90 mins.:) No, haven't driven yet. Based on pictures with complete specs to come.

Mods - please update the title to "LIVE first impressions" :p

Any clue launch date? This year festive season?

seems to have lost its "bulldog ready for a fight" stance and look- looks more mature and grown up, but will work well in India

the new ones looks really better than the existing one. But again these are just model pics, would really be interesting to see the actual pics of the car. Sid waiting for your updates and review :)

Design

The award winning design has already been admired globally, so Suzuki decided to keep the design evolved rather than adopting a new approach. Each and every sheetmetal is new, with the car longer and wider than ever before, and obviously aimed at global supermini rivals from other European and Asian manufacturers.

The design is actually quite aggressive, yet it keeps Suzuki's new family look first seen in the Kizashi.

Gen2 Suzuki Swift, EDIT:Caught testing in India, Pics on Pg.15-2011suzukiswift19.jpg

The front is now wider than ever before, with the trademark peeled back headlamps being now much larger and more aggressive. The all new front bumper is characterized in "V" shape character moulding which tapers down with the honeycomb grill, similar to the Kizashi.
The curvy bonnet gets more flatter and at the same time, is also now wider and looks much stronger atleast in the pics. The shape is made more simpler and the two character creases are now at more far ends as compare t the present model.
The windscreen also grows in size and promises better visibility for the driver and front passenger with the curvature being more rakish and squsrer in design.

Gen2 Suzuki Swift, EDIT:Caught testing in India, Pics on Pg.15-2011suzukiswift17.jpg

Coming to the sides, its clearly a love it or a hate it design. The front overhang is a bit longer than usual and it uncanningly resembles a VW new beetle if viewed in profile. As with all design trends, the large headlamps wraparound almost up till the A-pillar. The windowline is now much larger and flatter as compared to the earlier model, primarily to address the old model's criticism of claustrophobic ambiance while seated at the rear.
Glasshouse is generous and appears to be much more convectional in the interests of increasing space and appealing to a much more wider audience.

The doors are longer and more curvier as the overall length has been increased by 90 mm and now to a certain extent resembles the fabia. The central character line now runs directly along with the glasshouse and merges with more aggressive newer taillight design split into 2 parts. A point which makes for an interesting note is the rear door window curvature which actually appears to be much smaller, even though dimension wise its grown and replaces the squared angled design of the current model.

The backside has seen some serious changes. Gone is the simple look and replaced by more aggressive creases and curves. Singularly, the rear design is perhaps the not so good aspect of the car, especially the number plate housing directly under the tailgate which looks out of proportion and pretty bulky. The rear bumper appears to be much larger and aggressive but could have been more cohesively designed, especially the upper lip which merges with the taillights.
The tailgate again has been made more curvier and in the pics, appears to be smaller than the bumper itself!! Read it as a disadvantage due to potential high loading sill for boot luggage.
The rear windscreen appears to be of similar dimensions, save for added extra curves at both sides.
The taillights are again, nice and aggressively designed but the glass colour combination looks pretty cheap with excess of white and less of red. Tuner friendly perhaps?:D

After the first exterior impressions, lets step in for the inside story.

Gen2 Suzuki Swift, EDIT:Caught testing in India, Pics on Pg.15-2011suzukiswift27.jpg

Fabia came looking like a swift. How can swift now look like a fabia?
I like the rear quarter design. I feel the grill area could have been changed.

The Inside story

Gen2 Suzuki Swift, EDIT:Caught testing in India, Pics on Pg.15-2011suzukiswift4.jpg

The swift came with fantastic-for-its time interiors when it was first unveiled in fall 2004. Now, after 6 years, it really appears nothing less than squarish and ordinary, especially after we have come to see much more upscale interiors in rival products.

To counter that criticism, Suzuki designers went back to the drawing board and made the interiors more upscale and contemporary, if not the most modern around.

The dashboard carries the Kizashi family look with more rounded aggressiveness and a waterfall central console which houses the radio and HVAC controls. The pics shown represent the European model but expect some bits and pieces to be similar in the Indian model as well.

Gen2 Suzuki Swift, EDIT:Caught testing in India, Pics on Pg.15-2011suzukiswift5.jpg

The controls appear to be much more upscale overall and the multifunctional steering wheel gets more grippy and grows in size with a bit more thickness. The model shown houses controls for audio, bluetooth connectivity and cruise control, but I wouldnt be urprised if Maruti gives these as standard, at least on top models (sans cruise control), especially after the Punto, the Indica and now the cheaper figo offer these as standard.

The door trims do come as a bit of a disappointment with being quite plain jane and the controls for power windows and OSRVM being carried over, not necessarily a good thing.

Gen2 Suzuki Swift, EDIT:Caught testing in India, Pics on Pg.15-2011suzukiswift7.jpg

The central console looks fantastic with its black plastic plus a combination of piano black trimmings around the radio. Controls appear to be much more simpler and ergonomically sound, especially those of the automatic climate control, which will be standard on top end model.
Lower console houses a 12V power outlet plus a USB port with adequate stowage space for small knick knacks.
An additional small shelf above the glove box is thankfully a welcome addition and increases utility.

Gen2 Suzuki Swift, EDIT:Caught testing in India, Pics on Pg.15-2011suzukiswift1.jpg

The boot space is perhaps the biggest disappointment at just 211 litres, down a whopping 21 litres as compared to the current model. Clearly, priority has been given to increase the rear legroom after owners gave less than stellar feedback regarding the current model.

Currently, pics of legroom (seats) and utility space (glovebox plus side door trims) have not been released but with an increase of wheelbase by 50 mm,we hope that the feedback turns on the positive side and rear passengers get additonal space and comfort.
The model pictured has 60:40 splits, expected to be offered by maruti too in the top end variant.

After the inside story, time to look under the skin.

The swift now rides on a brand new platform with some of the key components shared with the kizashi.

Gen2 Suzuki Swift, EDIT:Caught testing in India, Pics on Pg.15-2011suzukiswift24.jpg

An increase inshould result in a car which is more spacious in the inside, larger at the outside and with the promise of better ride, handling and stability. Interestingly, the height is decreased by 20 mm (1510 mm to 1530 mm of he current model) which may prove to be a deterrent.

Gen2 Suzuki Swift, EDIT:Caught testing in India, Pics on Pg.15-2011suzukiswift22.jpg

The bodyshell is claimed to be more than 60 percent stiffer in the interests of meeting stricter safety morns (including pedestrian safety which explains the lower bonnet flanks) which should result in an overall solid feel serious lacking in all the current Marutis. Only time will tell how much compromise will Maruti make in the build quality once the product is heavily localized to price it competitively. The current swift seriously lacks a stiff body shell which we hope will be solved by the time the new model is launched.

Prototypes of this swift were frequently spotted lapping the famous Nurburgring Nordschlife racetrack in Germany so expect the handling to be much, much better, even if the suspension is softened for the interests of ride quality in India.

The suspension design too is carried over (McPherson strut in the front and torsion beam at the rear) but modified spring and damper rates with gas filled dampers should result in better ride quality, if not as plush as the punto, polo or figo, but maybe close to that.

Engines and Gearboxes:

Initially the swift will be available In Europe with 2 power train options.Gearboxes:

The swift gets an option of 5 speed manual with more closer ratios for extracting the best out of the engine and higher mileage, in addition to the 4 speed automatic carried over from the previous model mated to the new powertrain.
We request maruti to seriously conider the automatic gearbox as an option in both engines, as the market is grown and matured and the needs arise, especially in the congested city traffic of the metros.
