I guess that's the reason why Skoda may bring back the 'Octavia' name for the Laura, if a recent ACI article is to be believed.

With Rapid unavailable, they might have thought of something resembling Laura. I am not trying to defend them. Lauretta is a really weird name for a car.

^^ That's a good point. I guess they hope to phase out Laura in favour of the Octavia, which is a good start. But "Lauretta" will cause tremendous confusion with the Laura still in production. If they'd wait a couple of years between the two events, would have been better.

Edit: @vid- Sextus? That would have opened another can of worms totally LOL.

In mallu land it's likely to be understood as Laura's chetta (Laura's brother)!! After their A. S. S people are going to dislike Skoda for its brand names. 'Youngster' - that's next.

Here's some more I could think of - Lambodaretta, Laurel&Hardietta, and in true Rajini style - Lakalakalakaletta. Skoda, do you have a position vacant?

What all marketing folks come up with. First Laura then chota laura or Lauretta. Somehow the name reminds me of the following.

I think thats the key here.
The Laura in India is already sold as the 'new octavia' in the rest of the world, apart from India; just like the Next Gen Pajero is sold as Monteiro here.
Its about time Skoda guys get the well respected Octavia Brand name back to its glory - not just let it phase out with the exit model.

Skoda's new Sedan is Laurette and not Rapid!

"Autocar India editor Hormazd Sorabjee has revealed that the Skoda mid-size sedan, based on the Vento will be called the Lauretta. This brings to an end the buzz that the new sedan from Skoda may be called the Rapid. Adding further to the info, Hormazd says that the car will be launched in October with deliveries starting from December. Autocar India will be carrying images and detailed info on the car in their anniversary issue"
The Lauretta is Skoda’s contender in the mid-size segment which is currently inhabited by the SX4, Vento, City and the new Fiesta.

The Luaretta will share its platform as well as its engines with its group cousin VW Vento. There will be two 1.6 liter engines on offer, a petrol and a diesel. The petrol unit will be good for 105PS of power at 5250rpm and 153Nmof peak torque at 3800rpm. The diesel unit will offer 105PS @4400rpm and 250Nm @1500rpm.
Currently only the petrol Vento is available with a six-speed DSG auto transmission. We hope that the Lauretta comes with an auto transmission for the diesel engine as well.
Looking at some of the spy pictures the Lauretta, or the Fabia sedan, as it has also been known as seems peculiarly similar to the Vento in terms of proportions. The resemblance becomes even more evident when you look at the car in profile."

Hope they get the production planning right for the Diesel variant. If the same plant is churning out the Vento and the Skoda, will production capacity not be a constraining factor?

It looks pretty neutral and carries the skoda family looks - Side profile reminds too much of the vento, personally I would have preferred it to resemble more of the laura though. By the way - looks like it is the 1.5 liter diesel instead of the 1.6 in the Vento as was predicted by everyone in the forum (VW were running severly short on the 1.6 TDI engines), but then the power output is going to be 105 bhp against the expected 94 bhp. It will also help skoda them place this one slot below the vento. One more contender to the extremely competitive C-Segment now, I'm very interested to note how this shapes up.

Who decides on these names? Lauretta?? Its almost like the Skoda guys went to register 'Rapid', found out it was already gone and had to decide an alternate name in like 30 seconds. This is like VW calling the Vento a Jettetta!
Since its based on the Vento, the car will be good, no doubt, but why do Skoda name their cars like this?

The side profile is quite Vento-like, but not a bad thing to share the handsome look. This may look more aggressive front-on with the Skoda grille!
