Infact swift(platform) based Sedan is already there as SX4, right? I remember reading in some auto magazines that Sedici/SX4 is based on swift platform.
So what ever comes now has to be a totally new one.

SX4 is based on extended swift platform.

This one should be built on the same platform if they are to meet pricing!

what's a platform versus extended platform???
if they want to make a sedan out of swift, they HAVE to extend it.

I believe 'extension' mainly boils down to wheel base etension and related changes. Experts...

Wasn't the esteem a swift of its time?

And you don't need to do Tata and re-use the body panels to make a sedan. You can have a considerably different shape on the same platform. So, speculations of adding a boot to the existing swift are just that, speculations.

Very true, just like the Baleno was designated as Esteem in some territories.

Didn't FIAT do the same with Palio/Siena/Weekend/Adventure? Hasn't Renault done the same with Logan in Europe? Hasn't Honda done the same with Fit/Jazz/City? When you decide to have many body types based on the same platform, the cheapest option (for the manufacturer as well as the customer) is to use the same panels. That's what modularization is all about.

Yes, you can have different looking cars on the same platform, but then they would cost more.

Even when a fellow team-bhpian has actually seen the car? Please read previous posts on this thread carefully.

The sx4 is not based on the swift platform ,it is an all new platform developed by suzuki and fiat.

SX4 is MODIFIED AND EXTENDED SWIFT PLATFORM

The SX4 is a modified and extended Swift platform. The only role Fiat plays is giving diesel engine and getting a car to fill gap in their portfolio.

Fiat was in bad shape so it sold many engines to car manufacturers, and thats why we have Swift D with 1248cc award winning engine. Similarly fiat also sells the 1.9 JTd to suzuki for the SX4 and Viatra range.

But overall the SX4 is MODIFIED AND EXTENDED SWIFT PLATFORM

I don't think so. I clearly remember reading about SX4 SUV(Sedici) which is termed as Swift based SUV in Autocar magazine.

You are talking about Indian version of SX4, right? (This thread is about indian versions of these cars)

SX4 is petrol-only version now and has 1.6L engine. Where does discussion of Fiat diesel engine to SX4 fit?

BTW, Check this out So How Many Platforms Does Maruti Have?

Quote:
MUL has also brought in its fourth platform with the introduction of the 1.6 litre SX4 sedan, which is pitted against the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, General Motors's Optra and Ford Motor's Escort. This platform will be the base to introduce all MUL's new bigger cars."
***???
Isn't the SX4 Maruti's fifth platform? And Ford Escort? That died about a decade back. A tired, overworked writer or one too lazy to check facts?
It gets better further down the story. The writer further claims: MUL currently has three platforms. One is used to manufacture the M- 800 and Swift. The Esteem is manufactured from the second platform, and the Alto, WagonR and Zen Estilo, are manufactured from the third.
Which means, SX4 is altogether new platform.

Yet another link which says SX4 is based on Swift platform.

Another link which says SX4 is brand new platform Moneycontrol India :: News :: Maruti launches SX4 sedan :: Maruti Udyog :: Press- Market :: Maruti Udyog , SX4 sedan,Swift,,Suzuki Motor Corporation,,Jagdish Khattar
