Also, the size of the 3rd row seats (especially the height of the shoulder / neck support position) seems lesser compared to the 1st and 2nd rows, going by the pics. So could be tough for tall chaps anyway.

I would like to see a Hyundai H1 Wagon Type seating arrangement like below.

Tata Aria : Driving Impressions. EDIT : FULL specs, features & variants on page 18-h1-wagon.jpg
Also it would be interesting if Hyundai Plan to Launch H1 in India

so, i feel the best compromise is, like in innova & xylo, move the third bench backward so that its occupants can sit comfortably & make the third bench 50:50 foldable & also removable. that solves both the purpose.
And when they need all the seven seats, what happens to the luggage???

if you want to occupy all the seven seats & still want space for luggage, then the only option left is a roof carrier!

point is, with the current seating, 7 people simply cannot sit in the Aria. the back bench is not made for that. if its moved backward & made foldable, it can be used for big adults and it can be folded for luggage too, so it solves both the purpose.

I don't think you can say that with any certainty even after looking at the pictures(note reference to the excerpt in italics).
While I quite agree with you as far as the last row not being as spacious as they could have been, I differ on the inference drawn. I'd say this is perfect for 5 fully grown adults along with a couple of 14-15 year olds. The best thing is, the boot space is fantastic even with all rows in use.

I'd give this preference over the seating configuration of Innova/Sumo Grande etc, I do not find folding and moving seats enjoyable at all (my company used to have Innova cabs, and I've helped the driver on multiple occasions)

That being said, our discussion should be indicative of the fact that people have a divided opinion of this. Let's wait for the car to hit the roads, and we can all resume this discussion then.

Innova and Xylo are true 7 seater people movers.

Crossover vechicles are not just people movers they make a lifestyle statement. Why else do they actually need AWD and the extra power etc.
The Aria targets 5 adults and 2 kids set of buyers who wish to move in comfort without the hideous looking roof rack. It's a vehicle with ABS, ESP, TC, AWD, Auto Wipers/Lights, TPMS, MID, In-dash, CD Changer, Sat Nav, 6 Airbags, Cruise control, Climate Control, 15+ different storage compatments dual eshaust (obviously more for style than as a requirment for the 2.2 engine).

So I guess we need to be happy with the space provided.
The rear bench could not have gone any further back with the spare wheel under the rear luggage space.

The industry (including for SUV's) is in general moving towards having spare wheels placed under the rear luggage space. The merc, GL, the Q7, Q5, CRV, Outlander, New Lexus Land Cruiser all have choosen this way. It also allows for the rear door to be mounted on the top and rise upwards rather than sideways. I personally prefer the sideways door motion, but the top mounted door is what the world has choosen in the recent past. So we can't really fault the Aria for the way it's arranged on the interiors.

I think we are mistaken in considering the Aria for 7 adults even with the mid row seats fully forward, as that is not what it has been designed for. Possibly for short rides within the city it may be fine to have 7 adults, but not for larger distances where the luggage bay comes into use.

For the first time in India, there would be a vehicle which perfectly fits use by say a couple, their parents (grand parents) and upto 3 kids, or two couples (two families) and upto 3 kids between them. Or even a single family of grown ups without grandparents. For larger groups of adults with grown up kids I guess it has to be the Innova. Even the fortuner is not as spacious on the inside as the Innova, Xylo, Sumo Grande, for it too is in that sense a lifestyle vehicle out here rather than a people mover.

Frankly the only worry - pricing - anything beyond 12.5L takes to close to 15L OTR. They need to ensure pricing for the top model is within 1L of the top Safari.

Lastly the Aria promotes "Family Planning" - And that too is a good thing. - Hope this last comment is taken purely with the smiley in mind.

hi

I am impressed with the interiors. I hope they would have given some of the dash features to the new safari

My question is

Do you think Tata is trying to phase out the safari with the Aria maybe run it as its flagship model with improvements??

or

Tata tryin to capture the taxi/escort vehicle market so dominated by scorpio/innova

or

Tata truly trying to build up on aria and develop a affordable product with all features of a top end suv like crv/endy

Aria is a true 5 seater, the last row was folded when i tested the vehicle. but later realised that the set is best suited for kids. It has been positioned against captiva, fortuner and the endeavour. This was told to me as the company research guy asked what I thought about the exterior. I told him frankly that it looked like a bigger innova.

Sorry it is not a true 5 seater. You can call Safari a true 5 seater.ARIA is a 7 seater but the "un-informed" opinion is that it is not good enough for 7 people. We'll have to wait till vehicle is launched to know if the 2nd row could be moved forward to create space for 3 row because everyone has told that they have tested or saw the pre-production vehicle.

I agree that it is a 7 seater.

The reviews (both of them) clearly state that the middle row can be moved forward, but neither reviewer has tried that. Mostly because the review itself was not planned and just kinda happened.

Concluding anything is not possible until the vehicle is either out in the market or is tested by oneself.

I prefer to reserve judgement on how much room there is at the back, but I can say that I find it immensely practical to have boot space always available without having to go through the rigmarole of folding seats every time I need to carry cargo (as is the case with the immediate competition).

This is not only true for personal use. Friends who run a taxi business say that the Innova is in great demand for its comfort, but cannot be used for out-of-town transfers for a large party as they cannot carry luggage. The roof mounted racks are generally not shaped to carry much hard luggage or the luggage has to sit in the open (which the passengers are not very happy about).

I'm not sure, do the Innova and Xylo have adjustable middle row seats (meaning, do they slide forward/back to allow more/less room at the rear)?

Also there are wider room for improvements in seating option. Look at this video

I believe I mentioned that it can be moved forward, just that I didn't try doing it.

Judgement reserved till it is tried out, Raj. Never sat in the Xylo, but the Innova wasn't great at the back either for a 6'2" guy like me. The roof carrier with a full load of luggage is also going to raise the CG of the vehicle drastically, which would then mean plenty of wind resistance and obscure handling.

Agree with you 100% on the above.

Nice summing up here.

I personally wouldn't mind extra space at the back for the luggage. When my nephew was being put into a hostel, we had to take his baggage without a roof carrier in an Innova. With 5 adults and 3 kids, we could barely keep the luggage in and had a carry a few bags around our legs and on our laps.

I will give the luggage space an extra +10, for the thought. Indians always have a lot of bags to carry.

Though the Hyundai seats seem very convenient, H1 does seem to be longer than ARIA. I haven't verified the lengths but visually it does seem longer. Personally I prefer the Chrysler Town and Country seating setup.

Exactly. So we still don't have the specifics of an ideal set up. May be TATA has solved the third row space problem by possibly moving both first and second rows forward to find enough foot space for third row passengers. Moreover the vehicles seen / tested so far are the pre-production models and we should wait for the launch to test for ourselves
