IMHO Nano would have been ideal for India in 2000. At 2010 the people have moved beyond the Nano. There are lots of cars available in the market (especially 2nd hand market) which will be available for 1-2 lakhs and NANO is simple not VFM enough for most of the buying population. The average speed on the indian road have also risen. There are roads where the average would be close to 100 km and Nano would not be safe on these roads. All said and done for a person who just has one car Nano is not appealing at all.

I think to boost Nano sales TATA needs to do the following:
  1. Advertise the car heavily in electronic media (it's doing so already in print)
  2. Make it more practical car by adding the hatch door quickly.
  3. Left Hand side outside Mirror
  4. May be better quality interiors?
  5. Black roof (as part of anniversary or limited edition nano's)
  6. Bling Bling alloys.
I do not mind paying close to INR 300,000 for this kind of model. I bet many would be ready.

The main thing is that Nano is just too minimalistic. And now recently the prices have gone up too. For a consumer who was expecting to have a car for Rs. 1 lakh and bring home the car, dreams are shattered.
Alto at the same time is available at reasonably affordable prices and offers much more than what Nano offers. Alto is not that minimalistic, is a proper car ( like front engine, good boot for the given size, etc. ) and is proven car for Indian conditions.

One more factor is that Nano came in too late into the market. From 2005 to 2010, the market has changed significantly. From diesels that were not available in small cars, now in 2010 or rather in 2008 itself we had modern diesels in small cars. The scene has changed. Nano is purely a city car and nothing more. If one is supposed to have only one car, a second hand Alto or a new Alto makes more sense. If Nano is a second car, it makes sense that one car is for highway drives and other is for city driving only.

To sum it up, Nano is too little, too late.

Note from Mod : Please continue the discussion in the October Sales Thread
