The Volvo S60 has almost everything going for in its favor compared to the mighty Germans. A Perfect Package!

1) Looks: though looks are subjective, but this car looks really HOT! probably will be the best looking in its segment alongwith the Audi A4!

2) Safety: just checked the safety equipment list on volvo site and got bored half-way through! its exhaustive!

3) Comfort: suppose to be very comfortable with great seats and cushy ride. just right for Indian roads.

4) Power: the most powerful car in its segment in both petrol and diesel avatars. A 3.0l petrol motor churning out a 304bhp and 44.8kgm of torque. 0-100 coming in 6.5 seconds! (ACI Nov 2010 issue)

5) Handling: with its full time AWD, its should not be far behind the Audi Quottros. though may not be BMW good.

6) VFM - A great looking car with class leading Power and comfort alongwith very good handling and that too almost 8-10 lakhs cheaper (as it is expected) than the german counterparts would make this a terrific value for money car should Volvo price this somewhere around 25-26 lakhs.

I personally have no experience of whatsoever with any of the cars mentioned above but I am just really excited.

don't know much about the XC60 though. like in what price bracket and with what engine options it is expected.

Magikrider I agree with you,the s60 just looks stunning, and i think for the first time the mighty german trio have a worthy rival.

What Volvo needs to do ASAP is too expand their delearship and try to establish the Volvo brand has a premium, high technology, safe and reliable brand. These should be their USP.

And also in the face of reliability problems faced by the germans the Volvo might just be a worthy alternative.Although no idea how reliable Volvo will be in the long term in India.

I just hope that Volvo prices the S60 very very competitively as this will also compel the others in the segment to price their cars realistically and not take us for granted. as the S60 which is expected to be priced somewhere around 26 lakhs approx, for the fully loaded version (according to ACI Nov, 2010 issue) is actually priced thousand pounds more than the BMW 330d in UK! (source - Volvo S60 T6 AWD - Road Test First Drive - Autocar.co.uk) and here even the 320d is also much more expensive than the suggested price of the Volvo S60! so that means the BMW is just taking advantage of its brand name and taking its customers for granted! and the same goes for the other two Germans also. if the S60 is actually priced somewhere its suggested price, than there can be some price correction in the market hopefully.

XC 60 will definitely have an impact on the sales of Q5 and X3 if they launch in the range of 40L.

OT-Volvo used the 2009 film The Twilight Saga: New Moon to promote the XC60, including an online contest to give away models identical to the one driven by Edward Cullen.

XC90 is already well known in India, thanks to the success of 3 idiots.

I think that is very decent pricing, considering the fact that it is an import and comes with a Volvo (High Safety) tag.

Here is what Mr. Paul de Vojis, Managing Director of Volvo Auto India has to say:

Heart-stopping looks coupled with innovative technology and off-road capabilities, it is a perfect blend of style and practicality. Volvo XC60 D5 priced at 39.5 lakh rupees (ex-showroom) | Indian Autos blog
(Volvo India has really managed to keep the pricing very good comapred to other CBU's here in India as Volvo XC60 will be imported as CBU (Completely Built Units) from Volvo's manufacturing facility in Ghent, Belgium.)

The XC60 looks cool on paper and I have to admit I actually have to lay my eyes on the real thing. After the common sightings of the BMW X's and Audi Q's (especially in Chandigarh), it seems like a nice change.

Volvo sold less than 10 cars in October 2010 and is a very small player in the Indian context, and I'm quite skeptical about the success of this Volvo. Priced at 39.5 lacs + cost of options such as sunroof etc will push it well over the 40 lacs mark, more like 45 lacs on-road in most areas. BMW X1 is almost here and the new X3, which should be out next year, whcih are available with option of 5 year warranty and service packages seems more sensible buy. All these tech laden safety gimmicks on the XC 60 sure will seem nice in the begining but once things start to go wrong after the end of the warranty period, they will be more of a headache. Volvo offers a max of 2 years warranty and no extended warranty option.

The Germans are quicker, more sporty and enjoy much better brand image in India (and most other countries) than Volvo. Volvo really has its work cut out. A loaded XC60 for max of 35 lacs on road would have been a definite hit and Volvo ought to offer longer warranty options on its vehicles. Lets wait and watch.

Volvo doesn't have the premium brand, nor dealerships! All across India, as of today, there are a mere 7 dealers. For 40 lakhs, the product will be good......take it for granted! But when spending that kind of money, premium customers want more than just a "good" product (read = badge, pampering, aspirational value etc.).

I think Ford's sell off of Volvo caught Volvo in India with its pants down. MY guess was the original plan was to piggy back on Ford and use capacity to assemble Volvo's but this went for a toss
