Attn Nano owners: Tata offering *free* additional protection to exhaust & electricals

High Points:

- Basis some media reports on the Nano recall, Tata for some reason insists that it is not a recall. They state that the Nano is a safe car; this has been re-established through a second analysis, conducted during the months of September and October 2010.

- Their press release reads "The investigation, by a team of internal and international experts, has once again concluded that the reasons for the incidents in few Tata Nano cars are specific to the cars which had such incidents. We have noticed instances of additional foreign electrical equipment having been installed or foreign material left on the exhaust system. It is also our belief that as we penetrate deeper, the Tata Nano will be bought increasingly by users in the hinterlands not fully familiar to cars."

- Taking all this into account, Tata have decided to make the car even more robust, by providing additional protection in the exhaust system and the electrical system.

- Beginning the 3rd week of November, each owner will be informed about these measures. Option lies with our customers on whether they would like to avail for these measures. This will be provided at no cost to customers.

Pro-active response, though not amounting to a recall

I think Tata's (being Indian) have a typically Indian response to a recall. I.e. Recall = poor cars.

Whatever, still a good move. And since it is being offered free, hopefully most people would go for it. Just one of the many things not planned/accounted for when breaking new ground.

IIRC, nobody has ever recalled any automotive in India, although everyone has provided free upgrades whether its the brakes, A/C systems. Turbo's, you name it.

True but this is indeed a very good move from Tata's side. A proactive approach even if late is really worth it, will surely go a long way in regaining the confidence of the buyers.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Why Indians, anyone would opine recall=poor cars/bad cars.

Its a very good move by Tata not to term it as a 'recall'. All said and done, its a good move by Tata. This will further strengthen peoples trust on the brand.

First of all good move from Tata. By the way how many Nano's already caught fire? IIRC somewhere around 4-6? Or say less then 10?

If that's the case why not they publishing their findings for each burnt Nano on their website?

Sorry Tata I dont buy it. I can smell BS in this statement. It IS a recall and you know it. And besides, who would be so retarded as to not want to make their cars safer for absolutely free?

Sheesh!! C'mon guys!! A little professionalism here! How dumb do they think Indians are??!!

It stinks !! Why do they need to add fuses now? Why did they remove fuses in the design stage to cut costs?

Even a 40 year old fiat 1100 has appropriately fused wires for the indicator/wiper/head light switch etc. I've seen plenty of shorted wires in them - but they had fuses to prevent something untoward like a fire.

Since in INDIA we do not have a transportation regulatory authority to certify safety aspects of a car and to determine things like when a manufacturer should recall a vehicle, all the automobile manufacturers are having a free ride. TML can set an example by announcing a recall.. sigh.

Basis some media reports on the Nano recall, we would like to clarify that Tata Motors is not recalling Nanos. We would like to state again, as we had done in May 2010, that the Tata Nano is a safe car with a robust design, state-of-the-art components and built with an uncompromising attention to quality in all aspects. This has been re-established through a second analysis, conducted during the months of September and October 2010. Customers can rest assured that there are no generic defects in the Tata Nano.

Besides, our customer satisfaction studies with current Tata Nano owners indicate that about 85% are satisfied or very satisfied with the car, because of it being 'small yet spacious', its performance, maneuverability, durability, low operating cost and safety. Some owners have taken their Nanos on country-wide trips or to altitudes like Khardungla, the world's highest motorable road. This adequately corroborates the Tata Nano's reliability and safety, as was seen during the validation of the car with about 300 prototypes which covered more than 2 million km of safe operation before launch.

The investigation, by a team of internal and international experts, has once again concluded that the reasons for the incidents in few Tata Nano cars are specific to the cars which had such incidents. We have noticed instances of additional foreign electrical equipment having been installed or foreign material left on the exhaust system. It is also our belief that as we penetrate deeper, the Tata Nano will be bought increasingly by users in the hinterlands not fully familiar to cars.

Taking all this into account, we have decided to make the car even more robust. We will do this by providing additional protection in the exhaust system and the electrical system.

Beginning the 3rd week of November, each owner will be informed about these measures. Option lies with our customers on whether they would like to avail for these measures. This will be provided at no cost to customers.

These actions do not constitute a recall.

As at the end of October 2010, Tata Motors has delivered over 70,000 Tata Nano cars. The company has already declared open sales in Kerala (since August 2010), and (since October 2010) in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. We are receiving good response from these states. Open sales will gradually be extended state by state.

very diplomatic way of saying that the fires were due to customers who added electricals improperly and/or kept inflammable stuff in the wrong place.

What about incident in Mumbai?
Burning car after 45 minuts of delivary wheen showroom guy was driving? What was the "modification" and foreign material?

The owner was provided the Demo car, which had some foreign material blocking the exhaust pipe.

The only Nano owner I know, had made some modification in his Nano(had installed an off market radiator at the back). Going by that, and how new this vehicle(probably the first rear engined car for many mechanics) is, it will take some time for the mechanics to know the Do's and Don'ts.

Till then, Tata should make sure the Customers aren't making any modifications.

Demo car? You mean used? It was never mentioned?
Also when you buy "NEW" car ,"USED FOR DEMO" can be considered new?

Or the person bought "DEMO" car? If not don't you think it is cheating??
Or is it common practice to pass demo cars as new?
