Mass market brand name trying for luxury
High price - later discounted
Public walks for fear of dicey residual value
Looks like a receipe for a hotel taxi !!!!

Hyundai tried it, Toyota (for the camry in India), Ford with the Mondy, and now Skoda

err. . what are you talking about. . the only hyundai that has not worked is the elantra. the SONATA was a market leader till the revised honda accord cam n hit the market. . . .

hyundai has SOLD vehicles which are 8 lacs plus with APLOMB.

That time there was no cometition.people bought what they were offered.now try selling the Sonata embera over the accord and may i ask why has the elantra failed?because my friend competition was already there when it was launched.

there was competition when the sonata was launched, the sonata was the choice over the acocrd / mondeo and it blasted its competition. . . .agreed that the elantra is a failure, coz as a product its not up to the mark, but that does NOT mean in any ways hyundai is NOT a big car seller.
and the embera is not selling coz the accord has captured the imagination of the customer now. am not a hyundai fan at all, but i do think we need to give credit where its due.

surely we can give credit to hyundai for the santro and accent but none of it other vehicles have been a hit in india.Sonata sold because the accord honda was offering was rubbish and most fell for its looks.

Image matters..

I also think Image matters..May be the root cause for Baleno failure is it was priced wrong in the begining and bad looks, look at Vitara..
When it comes to big money snob value kicks in.
This is true for most of the countries..
So only, I guess companies have different brand names for different markets..
Ex. Honda -Accura, Sony-Aiwa, Ford -Linkoln(?) etc..

checklist for Maruti

Maruti needs to go through a microscope on the following points
1) Looks: (both front and rear) guess they can't do any damage to the sides
2) Pricing: Hope they have learnt from the Baleno not to over price if they are trying to sell cars for 9-10 lacs it better be worth it
3) Interiors: no more cheap plastics please, it better feel luxurious
4) Spares: should be from sourced locally as much as possible, OK to pay 13000k for headlamps but to pay the same for fog lamps Phew!!
5) Rubber: No skinny tyres please,
6) Performance: I guess shelling out 9-10L Mileage should not be the sole criteria, performance should be stressed

Any addition????

they might have to do somethi8ng like, launching a individual brand like the "infinity', u know. . .making`a individual brand" coz more than the 'small car' problme, maruti is stuck with ' seen everywhere and every one has a maruti' problem
Exactly.. Toyota faced same problem and then they launched Lexus brand....
