P.S.: Loved the ad, like every TATA's!
Big kudos to Tata if it gets rear disc brakes !
And turning radius decrease is a welcome change and really helpful.

And can someone confirm if its really based on Aria platform? The should have got the 17 inch alloys from Aria!

To be brutally honest, and this is something TATA should realize by now but have not (or do not want to), a Safari LX 4x4 at a very slight mid-way premium above the current LX 4x2, is probably the ONLY safari that is actually going to have any hope of getting some traction to the flagging sales figures month after month.

So yes, it would be a welcome move - but more for TATA than for potential customers.

Let me be devil's advocate. How old is the platform? Is it really worth taking this forward "again"!! I think its high time Tata invested in a more modern ground up design which incorporates the good points of Safari and come out with something better!

This is day light robbery if you ask me, add some lights and switches and then carry on for another year!

Sorry, it is confusing. It does not have rear disc brakes as mentioned here by TATA.

it also mentions 16" wheels and not 17".

I read that it has disc brakes from here-

Just checked the video, front looks much better than the current version. Rear does not look good without the spare wheel.

They should price it near current safari (+20K is OK) level to sell in big numbers.

@ ebonho..

Sales numbers ? Even with this facelift, they'll not do well in that department. LX 4X4 would be for those "budget" customers who are looking for a comfortable SUV. And I think these kinds of customers are less in number.

Re: Tata Merlin - Safari replacement? *UPDATE* Uncovered Pics on Pg 90

An old body on a new platform is not what was required. A major disappointment. I'm sure they would have recovered their investments and returns from the Safari project, so can't understand why they are dragging this along. Could be that the XUV design and price caught them by surprise making the new Safari looking outdated.

Re: Tata Merlin - Safari replacement? *UPDATE* Uncovered Pics on Pg 90

My opinion:
1. looks decent from front and rear, though not as good as before.
2. looks very bad as a whole, since front and rear are squarish in shapes while cabin area remains rounded in shape as before making it look like a fusion of different designs.
3. interior fit and finish looks a lot better.
4. Can be called at best as a facelift, not 'all new'.
5. looks like it should be a lot better to drive.

Tata should re-engineer the safari from scratch maintaining only the looks and space of current safari dicor.

The spec sheet on TML site shows rear brakes as DIH (Drum in Hat).....so no discs at the rear?

Re: Tata Merlin - Safari replacement? *UPDATE* Uncovered Pics on Pg 90

Its unbelievable that after trying our patience for 2+ years (and close to 100 pages and 1500 posts), TATA has been brazen enough to CONTINUE offering the after-market type mid row A/C roof mounted contraption.

And what is more, they actually talk about it in their official launch literature (extra blower for rear passengers, etc etc) as if it is a positive talking point!

I won't even get into the futile hope that they would have finally given the Safari a proper front facing third row option. If for nothing else, at least sales from taxi wallahs and large joint families would have increased.

And the press release on company website says disks all around.

Tata Motors : Media : Press Releases

Which one should we assume is correct, specs or press releas?

Probably an indication of what to expect on the quality front

It's described as "concealed" in the press release, so it should be different from the current one.

Re: Tata Merlin - Safari replacement? *UPDATE* Uncovered Pics on Pg 90

Is this ESOF thingy (electronic shift on the fly) something really new at least or does the old Safari 4x4 already have it? Is it only for shifting into 4H or also 4L while on the move?

The company release says that both the platform as well as the gearbox and wheels are from the Aria. So that means 17 inchers. But the PDF says 16 inchers.

Any idea when the price is going to be announced?

Re: Tata Merlin - Safari replacement? *UPDATE* Uncovered Pics on Pg 90

Tata Motors seems to have lost the plot completely. After 2+ years all they could do was tuck the stepney under the car and give the ancient, wavy 13-year-old bodyshell a nose that does not belong to it.

It is really sad to see what was essentially a good product (at one time) being flogged to death instead of evolving into a better one. If this is the path TML have chosen for themselves, it is time for a requeim.

jkdas - Thanks for the link on FB, but even the ad looks jaded and flogging the old marketing spin to death.
