re: Honda Brio - Small car for India - unveiled!*UPDATE* SCOOP Pics Pg.23

The Brio is larger than santro, i10 and very comparable to the Liva. Obviously way bigger than Alto.

Since the Brio size is an oft-debated topic, I did a quick little comparison with the Santro, Alto, i10, Swift-'11, Polo, Punto, Liva and Jazz (Punto and Jazz just for perspective, Brio is obviously smaller).

The way honda utilizes space, we can expect pretty good room inside the Brio. It should be more than i10, probably comparable/slightly less than Liva IMO. Looking at the quality of the interiors and the overall car, it is unlikely to be priced less than 4.5 - 4.75 lacs.

Agree with your post in TOTO!
and thanks for that comparison chart, really useful.
Honda are really good at interior space management. They have even thinned out the front seats to liberate more cabin space. I am sure there will be decent space within the cabin and comparable to the most spacious in the segment if not more. I would agree with your price estimate too.

Yup, Brio will take on Swift, Ritz, i10, Punto, Vista & Liva too. Jazz will compete as you mentioned.

I dont think Jazz will be re-positioned to take on Swift / Ritz. The top end of Swift might be in the same range as entry level Jazz. Jazz should ideally be competing with i20 / Micra / Polo.

Brio should be targeting these cars.
Now that the new Swift will be re-positioned in the pricing department vis-a-vis the Ritz, it's safe to assume that the Swift will be the Brio's biggest competition (not like Figo is doing bad itself, either). I don't see Liva causing serious dents to Swift/Ritz/Figo sales in the immediate future, until it's diesel comes in. Toyota priced it at a premium, and the first month's figures are evidence that it hasn't stormed the market per se, like it's sedan counterpart.

SLIGHTLY OT - It's easy to see now that Honda is holding on to the launch of the Jazz facelift till Swift 2011 comes out, to see how they price the top-end petrol (ZXi). I am pretty sure they will price it accordingly, and at a slight premium which Honda commands. The prediction of 6.7L-7.8L for the Jazz facelift sounds very feasible now, bang in Polo/i20 territory.

Good comparison. Can you also include the boot space? Luggage space is another important aspect of the space/size.

Am lazy to put up a chart. I am writing what I recollect from my memory -
Swift - 232 L
Polo/Punto -280L
Jazz - 384L
Figo - 284L
I10 - 225L
Alto - 177L
Santro - 215 L
Liva - 251 L
Micra - 251 L

Brio seems to around 200 L, not sure

200 L is adequate if not generous. But in the pictures it looked like it is in the league of A-Star boot space

Unconfirmed but what i read.
Brio boot space is 175l
But i feel it will be around i10 size of 225l
So 200 it should be atleast
Ok read it somewhere else too now. Both places had written brio bootspace at 175L

I read it as 175l too. It does look round about that size in the pics as well.
Should be fine for a city car. Its a different story though , if ones planning on a trip very often.
Hope the lesser boot space has translated to better rear legroom.

It does appear to be 175 lts. The spare wheel goes partially bellow the rear seat, which gives an idea about the floor area available in the boot.
Yes, it makes it a ideal city car but the problem is, those who want to keep a single car will probably think twice, unless it has significant FE and price advantage over i10 or a WagonR.
I also feel that they need to do something about the hatch door in our conditions, which is a single glass now. It feels psychologically less safe (from possible rear ending, theft perspective).

Isn't this Alto/M800 territory in terms of bootspace?
Hope that Honda has more aces up it's sleeve (apart from the 'H' logo) when they position the car alongside the i10s and Fabias.

Boot space is not going to be it's strong point for sure.
also read somewhere that the rear seats are not really that spacious either.(atleast not upto Honda space carving standards) The front seats are superb though.
One extremely useful Ace Honda has up their sleeve is the 1.2L I-Vtec Gem of an engine. Which is fantastic in the Jazz itself.
So a more nimble and lighter Brio with the same engine is definately a good thing.

From what my sales rep said.
The Honda Jazz will be launched first, followed by the Brio.
He pointed to the Brio launch being in September.

Don't know if this was posted before
Was just browsing the Honda India website.
and they have uploaded some info on the Brio.
It is on the website as the Honda Brio Prototype.
A little info is provided along with the dimensions of the Brio
as well as a couple of photo's in the image gallery.
My favorite one being the one with the hatch open.
You can see there is only one strut bar holding up the whole hatch lid.
The advantages of a lighter all glass hatch i suppose.
