re: Honda Brio - Small car for India - unveiled!*UPDATE* SCOOP Pics Pg.23

Car India clearly tells that the boot space is 175lts which is clearly Alto territory
"The Brio offers 175 litres of boot space, which is at par with the Chevy Beat and Maruti Alto, ".. boot good enough for city rides only.

Well, they have this habit of putting up an English link in such way that it almost look like an entry to a ‘spot the link’ contest. Thanks to my 2 year stint in Thailand

This one?

The whole hatch door must be uber-light, due to the large glass area. The rod looks sturdy enough, but I wonder if that glass is.

Yep that's the one.
only one gas strut holding the whole hatch up.
So it definately is light.
But you are right does make you wonder whether it is sturdy.

The specs say that the Brio would be 1.2 Liter 90 Bhp petrol i-VTEC motor. That would be pretty quick for a small car keeping in mind the power to weight ratio.
Wow!

Wow!
Yes the same motor as in the Jazz.
It's no slouch there either, so on a much lighter hatch like the Brio expect more than sprightly performance.
Just hope Honda gives her the right shoes, to match all that go.

Just a bit of info. Apparently, it was initially developed for the India specific Jazz to take advantage of the excise concessions.

Putting aside Honda's legendary smoothness, this will by definition be far better than many of the 3 potters derived from the 1600 four-potters.

Not much hope, economy is a bigger God.

Hope the CVT comes soon to India as well, and is not aborted somewhere (like the 1.5AT on the Jazz was). It will be the ideal city runabout.

I for one am eagerly awaiting the CVT.
Will make the perfect urban runabout that i have been wanting to gift my wife.
But last when i spoke to my sales rep, he was claiming that the CVT will not make it to India.
But i for one feel, maybe not at launch, but one day eventually.

Honda engineering is not a clumsy one (unlike some companies who we know really well), so it's safe to assume that it will hold well. Bet they tested it enough. I have my reservations about that rear glass though - somehow the whole rear does not inspire a lot of confidence in security aspects, because of all that glass space.

CVT might not be on the cards immediately. They will see the market reaction to the Brio first before deciding on it. I am guessing it will come in 3 variants (E, S & V) initially.

Sorry maybe i did not phrase it correctly.
I am pretty confident of Honda engineering.
I did mean the sturdiness of the hatch in a rear ended situation.
and one worry i really have is what is a bus touches the glass in bumper to bumper traffic situations. in a hatch you will get a small dent. But in this case it may turn out into a serious situation with glass even entering the cabin.
Not a nice sight that.

lol oops! I should be sorry, my friend. Guess MY phrasing wasn't correctly put, as that post showed. Apologies!

And that's precisely what I meant. The rear does not exude safety at all. This is at best a city commuter, to be used very sparingly on the highway. I am not at all confident of the fate of the Brio in a rear-end accident. Let's hope they make the body tough enough to keep the passengers safe. Even so, the thought of shards of glass flying into the cabin from the rear is shuddering, to say the least.

Honda will load this one well. ABS, Airbags, etc. should do the duty. Bet the major selling point will be the FE generated by the 1.2 i-VTEC. Will they be giving some extra cushion to the rear though? Unlikely.
