2010 DuPont Automotive Color Popularity Report

DuPont has rolled out its annual Automotive Color Popularity Report for various countries. White seems to be an all-time favorite in India, while it's silver that reigns worldwide.

Seems to be in line with popular perception. And brown beige doesnt seem to be so popular to the rest of the world. But coming to think of it, even in India, the introduction of this color did not do anything to the sales of Linea T-jet!!

Re: 2010 DuPont Automotive Color Popularity Report

I had to go with the only color my Ritz limited edition came in, but thankfully it's blue and not the ugly turquoise green that the brochure had. Blue isn't popular the world over but it kinda suits tall hatchbacks IMO.

My confusions still persist when it comes to selecting color for my new POLO.
I booked pepper grey and I find white too good for POLO and its easy to maintain.

Black is far more popular worldwide than in India and Beige is the contrary.

It maybe because black has disavantages like
-gets dirty easily(costly to maintain it as shiny)
-exposes dents/scratches easily
-gets too hot in Indian climes

But i still dig black for large cars like camry, bmw's etc. They exude a look of luxury ,exclusivity and power.

Re: 2010 DuPont Automotive Color Popularity Report

It is obvious for white to top the list. I think one major reason for that would be other colours being charged extra (the case with basic Maruti Suzuki) variants. People who go in for these cars (and who are quite a large no.) stretch to buy the car so save on spending more just for the colour.

And very few cars look bad in white (eg. Alto).

Here's what our dealer told us when we'd gone to check out Honda City. He suggested us to buy a light colour (white/silver) as against the red (the one we wanted and eventually bought) because the amount of heat in NCR is unforgiving in the summer and a dark colour would heat the car more and thereby require more cooling.

So, unless someone really wanted a colour, he could give in to this argument.

Re: 2010 DuPont Automotive Color Popularity Report

Goes with what I've always felt.
White is by far the most popular colour with us. The reasons probably being nearly universal appeal (no one could possibly hate the colour unlike maybe red or gold), cost (usually white is a solid colour and so, cheaper) and ease of maintenance.
And I've also noticed how we Indians seem to avoid black, despite looking stately and elegant to me. Probably because it is difficult to maintain (dirt and scratches just stand out!), and attracts vandals (as I twice quite painfully found out). But black is now picking up, though. Ten years ago you never saw a black car on the road!

It seems Silver is the preferred colour in India as well as globally. No wonder any manufacturer in India will first introduce Silver as the obvious choice colour option.

But these days even manufacturers are experimenting on the colour part with some real fancy names, hope they too make it to the top atleast in India.

brown/beige/GOLDy is very nice because it makes car looks clean even when car is little dusty. You may not worry to keep brow/beige spotless. On other hand black, red and other dark colors will look dirty even with little dust. Also premium cars come with beige interior and car color matches with interior giving even richer look. Just my 2 cents.

What is the basis of this research ?

Is it straight from the manufacturer's table or like the JD Power Rankings ?

I think Dupont supplies color chemicals to various manufacturers across the world. They've compiled this report on the basis of what colors are manufactured in the country.
