165ps, 180Nm Indica

Here's the linki
http://www.prdomain.com/companies/t/...s_20051201.htm
Quote:
Both the cars on display are running prototypes and while there are no immediate plans for commercial production, they are indicative of the effort being undertaken within the company to build more performance-oriented sporting cars. The company was one of the key sponsors, along with the Tata Group, of Narain Karthikeyan's participation in Formula I racing this year, the first ever by an Indian.
The 0-100 7.5s, top speed 220kmph indica is not for sale yet, thats the sad part. The good part

Quote:
The performance Indica prototype has a new development petrol engine with a power output of 165 PS at 6900 rpm. With a torque of 180 NM at 4500 rpm, it delivers 0-100 acceleration in 7.5 seconds flat, and can hit a top speed of 220 kmph.
Quote:
The Formula Racing prototype has a Tata 486 (petrol, dual overhead camshaft) 2.1-litre 16-valve MPFI (multipoint fuel injection) engine, with a power output of 165 PS at 6000 rpm. With a torque of 205 NM at 4000 rpm, it delivers 0-100 acceleration in just 4 seconds, and can hit a top speed of 260 kmph.
Tata has a Dual overhead cam shaft performance petrol engine which will go into production for the Tata Formula car. So Tata can make powerful petrols. Hopefully we have a 100 bhp+ petrol indigo soon

A derivative of that engine powered the Tata safari petrol. This raises the stakes. In a year or so we may see a derivative of this engine powering the indica/go's

They need to eek out a little more than the current 75 out of their 1.4L engines...maybe 85bhp and bump the current torque of 110Nm to about 125Nm.
(which are figures for the Indigo currently?)
Indigo or the Marina should have a 1.6L 95-100bhp engine ideally.

Indigo is 85bhp, and indica is 75bhp. Indica feels like 70 bhp, indigo feels like 75 bhp.
Before putting in more hp, Tata needs to perfect their gearing. They have surprisingly got the gear ratios right in the indica turbo, unlike the indigo TDi, which has little too tall gear ratios.

Going to ideals, Indigo petrol should have 2 variants
110bhp 1.6 litre dual overhead cam 16 valve engine
160bhp turbocharged/supercharged petrol 16 valve engine.

The 110bhp one should sell for 5L ex showroom while the 160bhp should costs 5.5L ex showroom

and pigs should fly too

hah ..i was about to say that ..

if tata wants to sell a performance car ,they should put the Aria into a limited production..i'd rather see the first Roadster in india come from TATA stables than Hyundai ..

i would really love for the aria to come in before the tiburon; but one catch though- not only should the aria be powered by the 2.1 litre DOHC, it should also be RWD...if not for outright performance or "tunability", the aria RWD just might earn itself a fan club, merely for the fun-to-drive factor (i hope) ..

as for the indica, the mentioned model is rally spec, the same one which was showcased in the ACI show- but as per the executive at the stall, the exhaust was "completely unrestricted", and couldn't meet any emission norms. now pray tell, production indicas fail emissions after 6 months- what would happen with the "sport" indica...????

still, looking at the way things are moving with tata, we can expect them to compete with the biggies, over time....

i think at 140 horses it will be more than just a fun to drive car ...not to mention the modding potentials ...like you mentioned RWD is an important factor no dbout the car will come at a premium price but still manage to place it lower than a Tiburon.

Quite frankly i doubt a performance Indica (4dr) has any prospects .. firstly the car has no prestige value, their are hordes of indica/indigo cabs ...i am pretty bored of its looks now ..cars been around for quite a while now ...agreed with added bumpers and widened wheel arcs its looks better ..
what tata needs to do is stop beefing ,cutting ,stretching and heighten one model ...come up with something new ..

Correct me if i am wrong .. but isnt the 165 BHP Petrol Unit the same as that of the 135 BHPS Petrol Safari, except this engine was worked on by J Anand, If i remember the engine SUMP was redesigned so that it could be fit into the Formula Car.... That should explain how it fits into the Indica Engine Bay ...

you cant say the same the same for the indica which has perfect gear ratios despite the weak engine the gear ratios do their best to strech every liter to the max and give the torquey feel to the weak engine, but i am not at all impressed with the gearshift quality which loosens as the cars gets older.
