The question therefore is , have any folks used any such guideline when negotiating for buying a used car. Were you successful in closing the transaction? If aware of the valuation methodology , you still paid a higher price, what was percentage difference between your purchase price and IDV?

Personally, I would not go on the IDV, as some folks jack up the IDV prior selling the car, they list the price at 'X' amount over the IDV. I follow the used car valuation quotes by IndianBlueBook(IBB), OrangeBookValue(OBV), CarWale. For most vehicles the quotes differ by about 20-30k with IBB<OBV<Carwale. Carwale/CarTrade has a higher price as the Cartrade certified dealers use that price as a bench mark while selling.

To my knowledge the right price is somewhere in between the IBB("Sell to a dealer" quote) & the OBV("Buy from Dealer" quote), this holds true for most quick moving used cars like swift, alto etc.

I could negotiate for a 1.5 year old,20k run Cartrade certified Swift that was listed for 6.8L (grossly overpriced) to 5.7L( which is still about 20-30k higher than what the dealer would have bought it for, resale values in Hyderabad for a diesel car are atrocious compared to other places). But, I could not close the deal as I went through another sudden financial commitment.

Completely agree with you. IDV is never a benchmark to determine the value of the car and sometimes IDVs are inflated by the sellers to get a good price.
When I brought a used car, I checked the value in IBB, OBV etc. and negotiated on the average price given by these tools.

Guys, I'm getting a 2014 Verna Petrol SX (O) Automatic, run 22k kms, at 7.4 Lakhs. The condition is quite good, no dents/scratches and interiors are well maintained too. Do you think its a fair price?

You can also check with Wheels Wisdom (https://www.wheelswisdom.com/), they do used car evaluation.

Found 2016 VW Vento 1.5D AT highline with 20K Kms in odometer, couldn't find anything suspicious when took for a spin except for a hissing noise from font left side while accelerating but then the engine and transmission behaved normally. Few dents on both the rear door and one on RHS rocker panel and a small crack on LHS tail lamp, again I'm not bothered much about aesthetics.

Agreed on a deal for 9.7 Lakhs and since insurance is expired need to shell around another 30K.

For a piece of mind booked an evaluation with Wheelswisdon for coming Wednesday, I know the vehicle has a warranty for another two years but spending a little on it will do no harm.

Thank you for the suggestion folks.

Also please feel free to comment if this isn't a decent deal.

Cheers!

I'm not sure they got their math correct here. The "USED" Car Price Check Thread-imageuploadedbyteambhp1502616050.867379.jpg

I believe they have an additional dealership verification charges (about Rs 500-750) which is included in the 3 car package. For an single car the final cost may go up. This is what I was told, but yes that needs to be verified as it is not clear on their website.

Do share your experience with them. A friend may need their used car evaluation service soon.

IDV decreases happen based on well defined guidelines , they are not arbitrary. An actuary would confirm this.
Inspection of insurance track record being a part of recommended due diligence, attempts to tinker around with IDV are pointless. Any out of the norm trajectory in IDV is easily discernible.

Hi folks...
Found a used 2009 model, FORD FIESTA CLASSIC PETROL, 1.6 S (the slightly souped up sports variant that Ford themselves released), that's done about 55,000 kms. Not sure how many owners it's been thru though..

He's asking for 3,25,000...

what would be a realistic price to the same...??

What could be the best price for a 65000 Kms old, 2007 model WagonR LXi, black color, first owner, loan finished years back?

I am looking for a used Skoda Superb 1.8 tsi MT in Mumbai. Recently came across a 2012 model which has clocked 50000 kms. Car looks clean and non accidental. Have not yet driven. Asking price is 640000. What should be the fair value of such car.

Looking for a 2nd hand SUV from 2013-14 vintage with 30-50K kms on ODO - preference being Endeavour. what should be the right price range and if any one can help with expected cost of ownership (read maintenance).

In Bangalore speak it's a good price, everything else being in good shape. In Mumbai I don't know, yet I feel for 5.5 it should be a good deal, again everything else being in good shape.

If equipped with one, please try to verify the cruise control functionality, sometimes these small but critical features do not work in used cars. All the best.

The realistic price should be 2-2.25 accounting for the rarity of the car. Without it the car would be worth even lesser.
3.25 is too high, considering it cost about 7.5 when new

And it's a second owner car already
