Its a good point to debate. It depends on the brand of the car and resale it commands also. Im looking too see if theres a general thumb rule like graph that can be obtained based on resale values of various car brands vs age of sale, This would be a good exercise to quantify such dilemma,. Of course its very subjective depends on age, car condition number of owners etc, but it would be great to have a overall picture.

Yes I agree.. I was just saying that the so called security deposit was not for the test drive according to the initial conversation.

That's a great deal. I often observed that the showroom used car dealers quote a lower price while buying from a customer and quote higher when selling it off when compared to individual/local dealers. I mean its a personal observation....
It's true we need to take multiple quotes but ppl seldom do as they would be in a hurry to sell it off/ or satisfied with the first quote.

re: The "USED" Car Price Check Thread

Zen well maintained 2002 @ 1.15Lakh
I know this price is unrealistic.
I wanted to know, what price can I expect to pay for a Zen which is in near perfect mechanical condition?

The quoted Zen has good amount of equipment as well.
I actually don't need the light bar (that is said to cost 25k INR).
Rest of it looks good.

re: The "USED" Car Price Check Thread

25-30K at the most for a 2002 vehicle.

The extra equipment just doesn't count for this sort of resale value calculation - so he can keep the light bar, stereo etc and give it to you with original kit.

Wow!
I would love it if I get the quoted or any decent similar example by 40-55k!
I agree, I totally don't need the expensive equipment which equals car current value!
That's a huge adder (which isn't on my list of things to have in my new car purchase priority)

Can you help me with range of prices for well maintained zens - say 1998-2002 , 2002-2005, 2006+?

Thanks,

Ace.

Looks good with decent accessories as well, but the price quoted is way higher. 65~75k seems a decent deal, if it is mechanically good and perfect body (say without rust) Ad doesn't inform about the RC validity.

Wait, did I see any oil leakage from head?

re: The "USED" Car Price Check Thread

Thank you, Mr. Boss & hserus.

I am looking at this example now:

2003 Zen 92000 km run & open to fair price offer (quoted 90K INR)

I talked with the owner and he seems like a reasonable man.
I told him upfront that, I would like to save both of us some time by not negotiating back and forth. Basis the car condition & used-car-price-check, I will make him one offer & we will close the deal if we both agree.
He responded positively.

Information about the car -
He bought the car from True Value about 5 years back.
In last 5 years car has been used 40000kms & serviced regularly at Maruti.
Not any major repairs done on the car.

Owner gave this info in the ad:
Quote:
Second owner, regularly serviced at maruti service centre. All 5 Tyres, kenda brand, changed at 77870, rotated every 5000km. Insurance till Oct'17. Amaron 4yr waranty Battery fitted in Feb'17. Sony Audio system and speakers, fitted in feb'16.
I am going to check the car in couple of hours.

I have told him, basis the car condition, I will run a price check online & then I will make him a fair offer.

Thanks,

Ace.

Just came back from primary check and a short test drive of the car.

The car is 2003 Zen Lx.
Well maintained (check interior pics).
Serviced at Maruti service only.
Tyres are actually Goodyear and are 5 years old with 15000 km run in these years.
Battery replaced this month.
Audio system is decent one.
Battle scars around the car body. Nothing too deep, mostly surface marks.
The last service done was in Feb 2016.

Is it fair to ask the owner to get it serviced before the sale?
Else, I wouldn't really know, if anything is wrong / due for replacement - under the hood.

I found from Tbhp OBV the valuation comes to 55-58k INR.
Catwale pegs it at 50k INR.
(Above valuation is for "Good" condition car)

re: The "USED" Car Price Check Thread

If feb 2016 according to the service book and there's no service done after that for a year not even in a 3rd party garage you're looking at a full lubricant / oil / filters etc change and a full servicing. You can do it yourself but knock the service value estimate off the price you pay. Have a mechanic appraise the car given its age.

I suggest negotiate the service cost and do it yourself.
How genuine the seller may be, we couldn't guarantee the genuineness of service for a vehicle that is about to be sold.

re: The "USED" Car Price Check Thread

Sold my Sep 2006 Swift VXi with 1,07,906 kms on the odometer for 1.75 lakhs.

Got it serviced before handing over and my friend took delivery directly from the service center.

Few parting shots -

re: The "USED" Car Price Check Thread

Hi Bhpians
Came across a well maintained XUV500 W8 - Nov 2013 Manufactured & Jan 2014 registered car with 32K Kms on the ODO. Car is in Coimbatore & came through a dealer, asking price is 14.25L.

I am no expert but I observed that tyres might need a change may be in another 10-15K kms also noticed more wear in the rear tyres(left in particular) than the front, hope that is not a big issue.

What would be the right price for this car.

Also existing owners please advice on what are the known niggles that I should be vary of in this particular year's model.

Hi, I am not sure about the prices there in Coimbatore, but isn't 14+ for a 3 year old model a bit too much?

A random search on OLX-Delhi, and I found these-

re: The "USED" Car Price Check Thread

I understand it is definitely overpriced. I am trying to gauge the best price I should offer, hence seeking inputs from experts.

It's the manufacturing year that counts and not the year of registration. 2013 XUV W8 should cost around 10L IMO. Resale value of XUV is average and also given the fact that this is the pre-facelift version 14.25L is just too high an asking price.
