Although the engine is worth mentioning, it was a great machine.
I became a practiced driver on the very same car and all it's niggling issues had made me a half mechanic. It was that time only when my passion for automobiles and cars ignited.
Similar situation for me as well.

Loved the car and the gearbox was the best. We live near the sea and rust was a major issue and we had the car done up completely twice.

However, the selling bit was a bit different.

The car was in good shape, but we had bought a Santro and needed to dispose the NE due to want of parking space. Those days we had the Uno and Gypsy and now the Santro was bought.

Couldn't find a buyer for a long time and finally decided to scrap her. As we were negotiating with the scrap dealer, a "paanwala" overheard our conversation. He said he'll buy the car from us at the same price as the scrap dealer. He needed to give a car as dowry for his daughter's wedding in the village. We were very pleased that the car was given a new lease of life. Deal was done.

I still remember that we could get an option of colour for the factory installed tinted glasses for the NE. The maroon NE had just launched which we booked and we had got a slight maroon tint for the glasses (no it didn't look hideous although it does sound wacky). Other options were grey, and green.

Don't think other manufacturers give this option anymore.

This car has some really clean lines. An ever lasting design. We were planning to pick a 118NE but later got a Maruti 800 in 1998.

Scarlet_Rider, lovely ride man. Keep it running

Absolutely true! A car should be in perfect condition all the time! PAL never learnt from Maruti and paid the ultimate price. Ferrari Red (Scarlet) is my favourite colour! My 1982 Bajaj Super has a similar shade, hence the my handle on this forum: Scarlet_Rider!

Not sure why most modern cars still don't have a gearbox that can be compared to the NE. Thankfully Hyderabad weather is kind on our cars! Our NE still rusts horribly while the Viceroy's body is many times better due to the anti-rust treatment that it was given by PPL. One fine day our NE will be a parts donor to the Viceroy.

Yes, this was something unique in those days!

Thanks! When a car is going to be a daily ride, it is better to stick to a variant from the Maruti stable. As long as I have the patience, this car will keep running!

Regards and Keep Revving,

Rahul Waghmare.

Hello Rahul,

Just wanted to know whether the AC blower is linked to the 2 air vents on the extreme left/right of the dash.
The 118NE has them linked to a vent on the cowl panel to bring in outside air & are not linked to the AC unit.
What about your Viceroy?

Yes, the air vents on the LHS and RHS were connected to the AC blower in the Viceroy. But the flow of air through these side vents was very poor. By the way, I no longer have the Viceroy. Due to personal reasons, I sold the Viceroy in April this year.

re: Premier 118NE 'VICEROY' - A RARE variant of the 118NE

A good friend of mine spotted this immaculate condition Premier 118NE VICEROY. I ran the registration number in Parivahan app, every document including insurance, PUC was up-to date. So it's safe to assume the car is still in running condition. It's a late 97 model as per Parivahan.

Wow - The car is parked "Inside" a house and that is why it is still in such a good shape. I have never seen this paint shade on a Viceroy!
Looks like the owner uses it periodically - Wonder how it drives!
