re: Premier 118NE 'VICEROY' - A RARE variant of the 118NE

@Rahul: You made us wait for a long time for the picture and now I know they were worth waiting. The Viceroy is stunning superb and I am shocked to see neatly maintained Viceroy.

I loved the PPL Logo on the Bonet. Its really looks cool.

Do post some pictures from the Engine bay area

Pictures of the Viceroy during cleaning.

Hello Folks,

When the car had come home, the engine bay and the interiors were not clean. This was probably due to the car not being used frequently after the husband of the previous owner had passed away in 2009. The pictures in my previous post were taken after the car was cleaned. I am now posting some pictures taken when the car was being cleaned. (Pictures of the engine bay when we got the car would have been an eyesore hence were not taken!!)

All the cleaning was done single-handedly by my father PRAKASH WAGHMARE!! Hats off to his patience and determination!!

The engine bay was almost black when we got the car. If a person were to be shown the engine bay directly, he would have had a hard time trying to figure out the actual colour of the car!! The first few weeks were spent only in cleaning up the car. Here are a few pictures. Enjoy!!

Regards and Keep Revving,

Rahul Waghmare.

Headlamps and front grill removed.

This was the only sign of corrosion on the car. (Most likely due to the acid from an older battery.)

Awesome !
I have one doubt though. I had once seen an NE with a different set of front indicators. The parking light and the indicators were integrated into one. Which model was that? Initially I thought that it would be the Viceroy, but now, I'm forced to reconsider.

@Scarlet_Rider: - Your father did the entire cleaning all by himself??? Hats off!! The entire activity has been done in such deatil!

Feels really really good to see such passion for NE!

How difficult is it to remove the dashboard/the intrument cluster? Need to check if all the wires in my car are hocked up properly as none of them is working. :(

Cheers!

In the Viceroy suppliment manual, it shows the seats with head rest. However they do not seem to be there in your car. So was the head actaully provided in any model of the NE or was it just for the books?

Does anyone have the engine bay pic of the car? (Prefrably a new car, I know it is kind of impossible, but just trying my luck) I am asking this because my NE has a lot of clutter in the engine bay and I want to get rid of the unwanted things and make it as clean as possible.

Cheers!
I have never seen any NE or Viceroy with head rests. Like you said, may be it was just for the books! I will be soon posting the engine bay pictures of the Viceroy after it was completely cleaned.

I have not come across any NE or Viceroy having the type of indicators that you mentioned. Probably the car you saw may have been modded.

Yes, my father is a one man army!! He is 62 years old but has the energy of a 16 year old!! I get tired just by washing the car, but he can go on and on!!

It is not difficult to remove the dashboard/instrument cluster. You need to remove the speedometer and remove all connectors and the cable, the disconnect connectors of all the switches on the dashboard and then finally remove the dashboard. I am attaching a picture indicating the points where the dashboard is secured.

Regards and Keep Revving,

Rahul Waghmare.

Viceroy's Engine Bay - After Cleaning and the Wiring Checked

Hello Folks,

Here are the pictures of our Viceroy's engine bay after it was cleaned and the wiring was checked and corrected wherever required. The air filter and the tappet cover need a fresh coat of paint which will be done later.

Regards and Keep Revving,

Rahul Waghmare.

re: Premier 118NE 'VICEROY' - A RARE variant of the 118NE

Congrats Rahul t for acquiring the viceroy.

Did you see that PPL did not bother to change the embossing on the tappet cover! It still reads 'PREMIER'

Also the oil inlet has a very cheap looking black cap. The original chrome one looked classec. I have attached 1 snap of my '89 model.

I would like to know how the A/C performs? Is there too much lag??

^ Boy! Very nicely done!!! Feels like all the wires are as new as they have come from the factory just now! Hats off to your father!

Thanks for sharing the procedure to remove the dashboard! Will try removing it over the next weekend!

Cheers!

Yes, while there are a lot of improvements, PPL did not bother to change a few basic things on the Viceroy! The ignition key is still on the left hand side after all these years! The choke knob has been moved to a more inconvenient position!

As you rightly mentioned, the black oil cap looks cheap. I am going to get a chrome oil cap for our Viceroy. Our 1989 NE has the chrome oil cap like your car has and the tappet cover has NISSAN embossed on it. Check out the pictures from the link below.

Yesterday my father recharged the AC system at home. The cooling is excellent!! And the performance drop is negligible with the AC on.

The reason I mentioned about the key position still being on the left side is that the choke knob is also on the left side. If the key position is on the right hand side, you can operate the choke with the left hand and use the right hand to turn the key. Although the choke is rarely required, the key on the right hand side is more practical.

Yes, the Viceroy does have a taller stance than the NE due to the modified springs. Ride quality is more or less the same as the NE. I haven't driven it much as Dad is always busy with it!! I will get to know more on it when I go on my trip from Hyderabad to Horsley Hills on 23rd May 2011!!

It has to be a electric one because it will make a lot of hissing when revved hard plus sap the power.
The fan in the Viceroy is a 6-blade belt driven fan. The look appears to be that of an electric fan due to the cowling. Need to find out if an electric fan from the Esteem can be fitted to the NE or Viceroy. This will provide another 2 to 4 BHP more I guess. The fan cowling is very effective. The temperature gauge of the Viceroy shows a lesser reading compared to the NE when both cars are driven in the same weather conditions with the AC on.

The Viceroy Visits Horsley Hills

Hello Folks,

I had been to Horsley Hills this week in the Viceroy along with my wife and kid. Horsley Hills is a hill station/resort located about 550 kms from Hyderabad. There are only two words that can describe the Viceroy's performance during the trip... AWESOME and FLAWLESS!! The car ran beautifully on the great NH7 from Hyderabad to Anantapur and then handled the many variations on the smaller NH205 from Anantapur to Horsley Hills with ease. We also did a short trip from Horsley Hills to Talakona Wildlife Center. I am attaching pictures of the Viceroy taken during the trip. Enjoy!!

Regards and Keep Revving,

Rahul Waghmare.

Wow Rahul!

I went through all the posts of you on your Viceroy. Excellent! The Horsley hills drive, I can imagine how fun it would have been driving. Driving total of 1000kms requires quite a daring for any classic car owner. Its possible only if you understand your car. In your case, I know you understand each and every aspect. Congrats on such a wonderful drive.

Your dad's passion to the cars is enormous and likes to do everything himself. He does it by heart and cant even imagine how satisfying he would be feeling after completion of even simple tasks on the car. You have a great Viceroy, and undoubtedly you and your dad will take very good care of it for decades to come

KkVaidya :
Not having AC does not mean that you cannot go for trips in summer. You had mentioned that your NE is a 1989 model. I think this model has quarter glasses, which will be very useful when you go for long trips. This was the one thing I was missing on the Viceroy when I went to Horsley Hills! Once you hit the highway, you'll forget all about the summer heat!! Just enjoy your ride!!
