The Viceroy Completes One Year!

One year back, 3rd March 2011 was when the Viceroy came home. How time flies! The Viceroy completes one year with us! What about the birthday gift? It is being pampered with a complete suspension overhaul and a thorough under body clean up! Will post the pictures soon.

Regards and Keep Revving,

Rahul Waghmare.

Kudos to Mr. Prakash Waghmare.

Rahul can you mention the noticeable improvements after the differential was 'Checked'. did you replace any parts?
Differential is a very complicated part and the settings are very critical during re-assembly. I am still not able to get the hum of out my car after the differential was opened. Maybe should try one more time as now I have all the specs from your workshop manual - so should get it done 'by the book'.

The differential has been repaired but yet to be put on the car. Hence we'll have to wait till any feedback can be given. The parts replaced are the washers (one shown in the image) and the idle pinion shaft shown in the image. The differential has been assembled but it still has to be put on the car since the under body cleaning is not yet complete.

Things done :
  • Differential repaired and reassembled.
  • Rear axle given a coat of red-oxide followed by two coats of black enamel.
  • Replacement rear brake liners procured.
  • Rear brake assembly (wheel cylinder) completely opened and serviced.
  • Rear suspension rubber kit purchased.
  • Suspension parts (longitudinal rods, transverse rod, springs and shock absorbers cleaned and painted.)
  • Hand brake cable removed, cleaned and oiled.
  • Rear brake drums cleaned and painted.
Things to be done :
  • Under body cleaning. (Just three words but it's gonna take some effort!)
  • Fitting the rear axle on the car.
  • Assembling / fitting the rear suspension and rear brake assembly including the hand brake cable.
  • Bleeding the hydraulic system.
  • Anything else that I missed out but my father remembers and has on his check list!
  • Finally giving the car a good wash, polishing (good ol' Waxpol) and taking her out for a ride!
  • And not forgetting, more pictures to be taken!
Regards and Keep Revving,

Rahul Waghmare.

re: Premier 118NE 'VICEROY' - A RARE variant of the 118NE

Over the last weekend, the rear axle, rear suspension, drive shafts, rear brakes and hand brake went on to the car. The hydraulic system was bled, brakes adjusted and the Viceroy was taken for a short run. On the coming weekend, the Viceroy will be driven for about 15-20 kms and then all the nuts and bolts will be rechecked again. Here are the pictures of the work done.

Regards and Keep Revving,

Rahul Waghmare.

Eagerly waiting for the outcome Rahul. Do let me know if the noise and vibrations have smoothed out or not. I am particularly interested in the axle and differential service outcome. Best of luck.

The Viceroy was back on the road and I had taken it to office last week. The car is running smooth. There is no noise at all from the differential. The Viceroy never had an issue with the humming noise from the differential. The problem was that there was excessive play in the gears where the drive shaft fits. When the pinion gear was held stationary and the drive shaft turned by hand, there was some sound heard due to the excessive play. This was rectified by replacing the washers and the idle pinion shaft that I have highlighted in the image below. Our other car, the NE has a problem with the differential humming sound and it has yet to be checked.

Here are the pictures of the car when I had taken it to office. Had just given her a basic wash. Polishing the body and tyres is yet to be done.

With temperatures in Hyderabad already touching 40 degrees, the AC gas was also recharged / refilled. Here are the pictures. The temperature reading shown in the last image is before the gas was refilled. Could not check it after the refill as I had to leave for office. Will check it over the coming weekend.

Great to see the Viceroy back on the road. The AC grill temperature shows a chilling 13 degrees
Waiting for you guys to check your 118NE for the differential humming. Infact many people will be waiting to read your feedback on this omnipresent problem.

The grill temperature after the recharging should be even lesser than 13 degrees. Remember this is the grill temperature and this was taken with car inside the garage. The real test will be checking the cabin temperature when the car is taken out tomorrow afternoon!

The NE's differential problem will be checked sometime later and not in the immediate future. Now the cars need to see more road time and less garage time!

Rahul Waghmare.

The Viceroy goes to Coorg and Mysore

Hello Folks,

Just like last year in May, this year in May, we went for a holiday in the Viceroy. We visited Coorg, a famous hill station in Karnataka.

Our route was Hyderabad -> Coorg (including Bhagamandala & Talakaveri) -> Mysore (stayed a couple of days for sight seeing) -> Bangalore (pass through) -> Hyderabad. The Viceroy clocked a total of 1960 kms. The best fuel economy figure returned by the car was 15.60 kmpl.

The car as usual performed great except for an issue with a partially clogged fuel filter which was cleaned during the trip and will be replaced now along with the electronic fuel pump.

Here are pictures of the Viceroy taken during the trip. Enjoy!!

Regards and Keep Revving,

Rahul Waghmare.

Dear Rahul,

WOW! You sure did get your hands on a beautifully maintained Viceroy! NOW I know what you meant when you said I was lucky that my Fiat Select was well maintained by the previous owner.

The Viceroy is one brilliant and incredibly well maintained car. I was glad to read in some of your posts that followed that she runs brilliantly. I am sure the person your bought it from would be happy that the Viceroy is in great hands and is very well cared for and loved.

The trips that you made to Horseley Hills, Nagarjunsagar, and especially the road trip to Coorg covering close to 2000 kms shows what a beauty the Viceroy is! Enjoyed reading your posts and looking at the photographs. The car looks stunning in all those pictures.

Happy motoring and congratulations once again on a great car!

Cheers,
Praveen

re: Premier 118NE 'VICEROY' - A RARE variant of the 118NE

I had sold my NE for a meager 11K to a scrap dealer back in 1999.
Rusting had annoyed me so much that I wasn't ready to keep it any longer.
Although the engine is worth mentioning, it was a great machine.
I became a practiced driver on the very same car and all it's niggling issues had made me a half mechanic. It was that time only when my passion for automobiles and cars ignited.

Thanks for your wishes, Praveen! The full credit for keeping this car in top condition goes to my father Prakash Waghmare. He is 64 years young and I am 34 years old. I get tired just by looking at him work in our garage but he goes on and on!

Absolutely spot on! Rusting was what made the NE a flop show. The Viceroy addressed the issue of rusting but it was too late and not many cars were sold. The body of the Viceroy is 10 times better than the NE. One fine day our NE will become a donor of spare parts to our Viceroy just because it has a body that will be a denter's worst nightmare.

Apart from the engine, the gear box is also worth mentioning. It is still considered as one of the best gear boxes ever. I recently drove a friend's brand new car (Don't want to reveal the name of the car!). Found that the gear box was so hard that I thought there might be something wrong with it!! Surprising to note that even after so many years, most cars still have gear boxes that are no where as slick as the NE's gear box.

re: Premier 118NE 'VICEROY' - A RARE variant of the 118NE

You are absolutely right! 118NE had one of best gear boxes. Accurate shift and road handling was great. I had travelled all over south India and wherever I go people were appreciating my car. I had a unique problem in Mangalore. No body was willing to repair 118NE. Scarcity of spare parts was haunting me. I am a frequent traveler. According to me, my car should be in perfect condition 24 x 7 , 365 days! But I was hesitating to travel in 118NE. So, I had no other option but to sell it. I got a very good offer for her.
Presently I own 2010, beautiful, ferrari red , pocket rocket Maruti 800! Yesterday, I have returned from Chennai and trip was amazing! ( no headache, no tension!)
