Premier 118NE 'VICEROY' - A RARE variant of the 118NE

We NE Club - Bangalore [NECB] guys recently came across a very well maintained Premier 118NE VICEROY. A aged couple owns the car now and was previously owned by a noted Kannada Actor.

"Premier 118NE VICEROY" was released by PAL in association with French car maker 'Peugeot' in 1998 just before Premier Automobiles was closed.

"Premier 118NE VICEROY" was the last of the 118NE series which had better body which was not so prone for rusting. Better interiors too compared to the previous series of NE.

It was powered with Nissan A12 engine and Nissan gearbox just like the previous NE models.

PAL supposedly manufactured very very few of these VICEROYs.

I dedicate this thread to our FIAT GURU - Mr. BEHRAM DHABHAR! Thankyou Sir for all the knowledge on FIATs you have given to us.

More details about this variant of NE can be provided ONLY by BEHRAM DHABHAR!

Enjoy the pics!!

The horn button reads "PPL" Guess it is Premier Peugeot Limited"

What was fundamentally different in this NE from the other NEs? Was the changes just a better chassis?

I dont find this variant any different from the regular 118 NE except the PPL monogram on the steering and the Viceroy name on the boot.
Btw is a 1998 car considered classic to be in this section of the threads?

When we can have scooters and 2 wheeler threads in a Vintage cars and Classic thread, why not the Viceroy..., which is a Car in the first place?

Karthik, The viceroy had new body metal, which was not prone to rusting as the old 118NE's. And the engine was much refined. Though there were nothing glaringly visible difference in its design. Can you enlighten us about any differences if exists.

Premier 118NE VICEROY" was released by PAL in association with French car maker 'Peugeot' in 1998 just before Premier Automobiles was closed.

If you are referring to this line "funkykar" , then it is a bit misleading . As per my understanding the "association " was limited to the renaming of the co as Pal-Peugeot limited. The car also was made in the same factory that the Peugeot 309 was being produced and that is the only association with Peugeot

I have seen the same model in person when it had come out and the only difference was the badging and some new colors.

re: Premier 118NE 'VICEROY' - A RARE variant of the 118NE

The company was called Pal Peugeot limited. The biggest change that was advertised widely was

1. Quality control, improved by folds with the systems & management by Peugeot.

2. Rust Innibition - The new car was less prone to rust as advertised.

other engineering changes I am not aware of.

re: Premier 118NE 'VICEROY' - A RARE variant of the 118NE

It's great to see a viceroy on team bhp. This is one car that has not been talked about very much, and much less seen. In Ahmedabad, I have seen just two of these. One still had the red beacon meant for the Government vehicles!
Apart from addressing the rust problem, Pal also changed the parking lights on these, I believe. The indicator and parking lights were on the same mount in the cars that I saw.
I doubt whether the side lights on this particular car are original.

re: Premier 118NE 'VICEROY' - A RARE variant of the 118NE

@funkykar: Ok I have read the first post again very very carefully:
1. "just before Premier Automobiles was closed" Does it make it special?
2."was the last of the 118NE series which had better body which was not so prone for rusting. Better interiors too compared to the previous series of NE." Does this?
3. "PAL supposedly manufactured very very few of these VICEROYs." But obviously due to 1 above or maybe this
4. "was previously owned by a noted Kannada Actor."

Prey I am not sure which one of the above attributes makes it special enough to be raved about? Or have I missed something out, let me see. umm, dont see nothing!

^ Let alone both of us playing with words . Any classic car lover will understand what is speacial about the Viceroy. For old car lovers, even a minute change in variant is special. Something only old car lovers will understand.

It's a NE thing you wouldn't understand.

But I want to make you understand. Whats the difference between Bullet Standard and Electra? Electra starts even without battery(right?) which is great. For a layman Standard, Electra, Machismo, Classic are all just BULLET.

For a NE lover, Viceroy is really special because it doesn't RUST-which is the biggest head-ache for NE owners.

re: Premier 118NE 'VICEROY' - A RARE variant of the 118NE

Found some interesting articles about Viceroy.

Premier's Viceroy was the Peugeot 1537cc TUD-5 engined version.

I had seen one in the Bombay Cycle & Motor Agency, Opera House with the Peugeot diesel. I was with Larsen & Toubro Ltd. for five years and the company bought huge volumes of new Premier cars for its managers from BC&MA.

The Premier 118NE, Premier 1.38D, Premier Viceroy, Peugeot 309 GL & Peugeot 309 GLD cars were produced at the PAL-PEUGEOT LTD. plant at Manpada, Dombivli (East), Thane. PAL-PEUGEOT LTD. owed the French car giant, Automobiles Peugeot, a whopping Rs. 85 crore that Peugeot magnanimously waived off in Sept.1999.

Back in 1999 (and probably still to-date) Automobiles Peugeot were known to make the world's best diesel engines.

It was registered as MH05C590. 588 was dark blue and 590 was maroon. The dashpanel had to be cut to accommodate the vacuum pump / distributor at the end of the camshaft so we had lots of problems packaging the AC but we did it on prototype basis. It was done in 1994.

Best regards,

I just don't see the hype!? Its a regular 118NE with namesake improvements. Even Ford does better with its 'editions'
