Maruti mulling a MUV launch along with the swift/dzire upgrades

Todays Economic Times carries an article on Maruti's plan to launch an MUV late next year.

Maruti plans Swift, Dzire upgrade; to launch MUVs - The Economic Times

Its a welcome move. If Maruti plonks in the national diesel engine in this MUV, it will be sure success.

Maruti's earlier foray with Grand Vitara wasnt successful. So, they may be giving it a shot again.

While the upgraded variant of the Swift will be launched by the end of next year, it plans to make its foray into the multi-utility vehicle (MUV) segment later next year.
Maruti sorely misses a product in that area (it had GV but it did not ruffle too many feathers). However, the letters in blod caught my attention- Upgraded swift not until the end of next year? Must be a print error- no?

The below are two models owned by Suzuki which are missing in Maruti portfolio. So we might expect anyone. I am not sure whether Maruti would start up a project from scratch for MUV.

Any chance of a SX4 based soft roader which is seen in many parts of the world? A Suv in about 9-11L range would really do well as a cheaper alternative to the Yeti.

Re: Maruti mulling a MUV launch along with the swift/dzire upgrades

From a Malayalam daily, I read *new* Swift will be starting production in July 2011 in Manesar plant. I guess SX4 Diesel [1.3 DDiS VGT - 90 bhp] will be launched in Jan 2011 or so.

And the MPV they are talking about is R3 concept which might be launched in 2012 and most probably with the Diesel [1.3] option.

And if they bring a Diesel heart to the Vitara at the current prices, it should save the model.

Also isnt Jimny the "Gypsy" outside India ? I guess they could scrap "Gypsy" and replace it with Jimny.

Re: Maruti mulling a MUV launch along with the swift/dzire upgrades

MSIL does not have the license to produce the 90 HP VGT based on the DDis. This is the reason they are not able to introduce in the SX4. They will probably introduce the VW diesels as they have recently tied up with VW for joint development of the cars.

Re: Maruti mulling a MUV launch along with the swift/dzire upgrades

@sparkled : SX4 is not a suzuki product .It is Fiat product and what you are mentioning is a variant of Fiat seddicci (maruti sells it here as sx4)

I still wonder if Fiat launched it , people would have hated it in India.

Re: Maruti mulling a MUV launch along with the swift/dzire upgrades

Is there any diesel engine by MSIL? I doubt it can carry on with borrowed engines without one of its own as that could be a limiting factor in expansion/diversification of its product portfolio.

The soft roader you are mentioning IS the actual SX4 aka Fiat Sedici which debuted in 2006. The sedan version was introduced a year later in 2007. If MSIL plans to introduce the new Swift, they definitely will reboot the DZire to make it the all new DZire.

Re: Maruti mulling a MUV launch along with the swift/dzire upgrades

India being Suzuki's largest and most lucrative market, one would think they would develop a vehicle specific to India's tastes- like an affordable and aesthetic diesel SUV. All we seem to get instead, are the Kei cars and the Dzire. If they truly want to scale up as a mature car manufacturer, they have to put in cycles to develop market-specific vehicles even if its beyond their current comfort-zone of small cars.

Re: Maruti mulling a MUV launch along with the swift/dzire upgrades

Swift/dzire upgrade is the Swift version2 which is likely to be launched by 2011 1Q.

And the MUV would be the Jimny.

Suzuki should seriously think of a diesel MUV like APV to meet the challenge that will soon be posed by Venture to Omni/Ecco.
