Re: December 2010 : Indian Car Sales Figures

Some quick comments:

- Audi A4 & A6 lagging behind in the German luxury car race big time. Q7 owns the Q5. Quite literally! Overall sales not a patch on Mercedes & BMW.

- Status quo at Chevrolet. Beat seems to have settled at 2.5k'ish level and is most likely to stay there until the diesel arrives. Altis takes a dominating lead over the Cruze.

- It's absolute disaster for Fiat. You cannot run a company by selling a measly 275 cars in a month. To put that in perspective, an ol' outdated sedan like the Accent sold nearly 4 times as much as Fiat's cars combined...with their 4 engines and a 100 variants! Or to understand the potential of the Indian market, here's another one : The 50 lakh rupee Mercedes E Class outsold all Fiat models combined. I've interacted with the Fiat team and know they are trying their best. But what's needed is a complete overhaul in marketing & positioning. C'mon, a car like the T-Jet alone deserves to sell 300 units a month.

- Somethings amiss with the Figo. With its value proposition and Ford's strengthened network, it's easily a 6,000 monthly hatch. Does anyone know of inventory / supply issues?

- The best selling car for HM-Mitsubishi remains the Ambassador! Pajero selling well, after you consider it's not available in BS-IV cities. Lancer & Cedia are finished, no point in flogging the dead horse any more.

- Honda City back to its healthy 4,000 odd volumes. But little else to cheer Honda otherwise. At one time (5 years back), the City, Civic, Accord & CRV were at the top of their respective segments. Honda's strategy in the last 3 years leaves a lot to be desired.

- Santro, i10 and i20 all moving off showroom floors fast. Verna sales back to realistic levels after the "facelift" spike. Sonata who?

- The Scorpio continues to outsell the Xylo. Surprising when you consider that the Xylo is cheaper, newer and has so much more space. Well, that's I-M-A-G-E 101 for you.

- The Alto, WagonR, Swift and Dzire continue their reign over the market. Surprising dip for the SX4, perhaps getting hammered from the action below (Etios) and above (Vento). The Omni & Eeco are doing exceedingly well, thanks in no small part to their sq. ft / rupee ratio.

- Just look at the performance of the E-Class; the luxo-barge is literally flying off shelves. Even the C-Class pales in comparison. Don't miss how SUVs and other non-sedan products bring Mercedes noticeable volume (and fat profits)

- The Innova remains king of the MUV hill, and the most profitable product for Toyota. Watch the Etios overtake the Innova in 2011. Fortuner overtakes Corolla!!

- Just look at the Fabia! The facelift & repositioning have multiplied sales nearly 4X more. Laura isn't performing as well as expected. Superb continues to redefine the 20 lakh sedan segment.

- Aria seems to be settling at the 250 - 300 mark. Not too impressive. I'm sure a lot of us are happy to see the Nano climb up. Indigo & Manza feeling the Etios heat?

- VW Vento is closing in on the Honda City, slowly & steadily. The only factor restricting higher numbers is production constraint.

Re: December 2010 : Indian Car Sales Figures

Very sorry numbers for Fiat. City sales are healthy. Honda might not see any reason to bring diesel for it.
On the other hand, hope Figo sales are not an indication where some companies can move cars when they have new models and then settle down to lower numbers.

Re: December 2010 : Indian Car Sales Figures

Isn't it funny that Ambassador sales was 450 units and Total Fiat sales was about 250 units....

I find it amusing....

Nano seems to be back on track...for Dec at least

Re: December 2010 : Indian Car Sales Figures

Very unfortunate for fiat. Should stay away from TATA and have their own marketing and sales and service outlets. It is too late now. Hope the good products will rise back to the position they deserve.

Figo numbers is the result of a dated design? Looks like a generation or two old (again my personal opinion). Otherthan that the product is good.

Very dramatic turn of events.

Looking forward to more analyses..

*Update*

Chevrolet added to the opening post.

Quote:
Honda might not see any reason to bring diesel for it.
No longer a matter of what you *are* doing. Rather, it's about what you *can* do. Honda's market share is slipping (as a manufacturer). They need diesels, the 5 lakh rupee hatchback and better equipment.

GTO - Are these final figures for Fiat?
Well, considering that December is over, I'm pretty sure they can't sell any more cars in that month

Re: December 2010 : Indian Car Sales Figures

With soo much hype about the Figo, I thought it would be selling in serious numbers, good to know that the Beat is ahead of the Figo.

Re: December 2010 : Indian Car Sales Figures

1) Fiat will be out of this country if sales do not improve. Very bad, dont know what, but things are really not going well. Time and again I have made this statement of independent network. Etios heat is more felt by Linea and small car heat is more felt by GP than any other car.

2) Maruti, is yet to put out sales numbers and I think it will provide a broader view as both are present in small car market. Want to see WagonR sales figures as i10 has dropped from 13-15K units.
Accent is still selling which is good. Verna deserves to go down considering the negative transformation it underwent. Eeco is one more car that can do well.

3) Mitsubishi is trying to survive on cars like outlander, but for how long ? Lancer is better than Accent but pricing needs to be looked into. Cedia again deserved to do better. Both are good products if price is reduced a bit, specially lancer. Bring it down to around Accent levels and sales might go up.

4) Corolla diesel magic seems to have started doing its job. Sales of Scorpio is good. But Xylo deserves to do better IMO.

Re: December 2010 : Indian Car Sales Figures

Really surprised to see such a low sales numbers in December. I remember almost all OEMs were offering some discounts & offers to customers.

It is a shock for Figo. In fact, Ford was conducting a "Midnight Sale" to enable potential buyers to visit their dealer showrooms in the late evening upto mid night.

Re: December 2010 : Indian Car Sales Figures

Have the year end schemes helped the companies to boost their sales?
Iam not sure, but it may reflect in the Jan 2011 figures. Can some one please confirm this?

Did the Ford mid-night scheme help the company to boost the sales? Same with GM. Did the December offer work wonders ? Iam doubtful. The Beat has seen a decline in sales ( December 2517 units as against 2547 units in November )
Fiat needs serious rethinking of their marketing strategies along with their product offerings.

Re: December 2010 : Indian Car Sales Figures

quarterly figures would probably give a better indication of trends.
monthly figures need next month's figures to get an idea of trends.
anyway glad to see that Nano seems to be back on track.

Re: December 2010 : Indian Car Sales Figures

407 Etios already sold? Nissan hit it right with Micra, if only they could increase their dealer network.

Also can anyone post Maruti sales numbers?

Following might improve FIAT sales:
1. Introducing something similar to chevrolet promise
2. Overhaul sales (front desk) team
3. Better interiors for Punto.

I bought Punto MJD E+ one year back. Sales people were trying to convince me to buy Vista (at that time Vista doesnt have ABS, other safety features, so I ruled that out.)

Now, vista comes with ABS, airbags - with high probability people who went to Tata-Fiat showroom to buy Punto end up with buying either Vista [or, different make car - i20, ...].
