I have posted SIAM data for domestic sales for Jan 2005-Oct 2007 here:

vasudeva - MONTHLY DOMESTIC SALES

On an overall basis (cars+MUVs+vans), as compared with 9/07 sales declined in 10/07 for almost all manufacturers except for small increases for Hyundai and MUL. Compared with year ago (10/06), sales declined in 10/07 for Fiat, Ford, HM, Honda, Hyundai, and Skoda. Increased for BMW, Daimler, GM, M&M, MUL, Toyota, and Tata.

Some key points:
1. M800 sales drastically down.
2. Total SX4/Esteem sales have now declined from 4885 in 9/07 to 4177 in 10/07.
3. City now has the measure of its competition with it being perhaps the largest seller with 3552 in 10/07 compared with 4177 for SX4+esteem
4. Optra diesel is now selling drastically less at 436 in 10/07 (738 in 9/07).
5. All the Spark bookings (reported by GM) have not translated into sales with only 3441 in 10/07 for Spark+uva
6. Skoda Octavia+Laura has bounced back.
7. Civic marginally up but Corolla somewhat down.
8. Super sales increase for M&M SUVs.
9. grand Vitara languishing at 104 per month.

The best sales increase for 10/07 over 9/07 has to be the Elantra. Hyundai managed to sell 18 vs 3 in 9/07. Production had already stopped in Jan 07, so it took them 9 months to clear it. Do not know if there are still some Elantras around.

Something strange about the GM's Spark/UVA production which makes me feel that some of the cars sold in Oct 07 after the price cut may have been older month production.

Here is GM's 3401-4000 mm monthly production and sales (first figure is production, and second is domestic sales, there are no exports) for Apr-Oct 07.

4/07: 2049, 804
5/07: 3256, 3001
6/07: 2917, 2355
7/07: 2516,2214
8/07: 2513, 2975
9/07: 2466, 2631
10/07: 2677,3441

Overall production for 4/07-10/07 was 18394, and sales at 18602. Considering sales were higher than production in 8/07-10/07, some older stock is also being cleared (usual for all, but I have seen this more often for GM).

4/07:

Well, Utility Vehicles (UV) <3.5 tonnes, passengers <7
Does this mean only Grand Vitara (for Maruti) and CR-V (for Honda)?

If so, then GV looks like settling @100 per month while CR-V has plummeted to similar levels from historic highs. CR-V fall is quite astonishing.

Yes it means Grand Vitara and CRV. I did not see that CRV had fallen so sharply. I have checked again from SIAM data and the figure for CRV is correct at 125 in 10/07. It could be losing to Safari. Safari is classified in 2 categories: <3.5t, <7; and <3.5t, <9. Sumo is classified in <3.5t, <9; and <5, :13.

Considering Sumo sales are good, it means that the safari is being hammered.
Looks like 2.2 is a flop show.

In the <3.5t,<7 passenger category, only Safari is included. Here it sold 2353 in 10/07, compared with 1536 in 9/07. In fact, the reverse may be true if you look at Tata's sales trend in the other 2 MUV category where Sumo is also included.

GM in the premium segment should be the various variants of Optra and the Magnum?

GM is losing out big time on that segment (as well as all others )

Swift DDiS is selling on the merits of the engine but the Optra magnum does not seem to be able to do that!!!

What's the matter?

I have TD'd the Swift DDiS and it is one amazing machine. Haven't driven the Optra diesel yet...
