March Passenger car Market Scenario

ET Auto 3rd April '08

Elantra sold 10 in 3/08. Now, Elantra is out of production since Jan 2007. Then who bought 15 month old stock?. Fudge, genuine buyers, or forced down the throat of `loyal' Hyundai employees. For Hyundai, i10 is taking away Maruti's market.

GM can continue to post huge 50-60% increases for another month. See their press releases for May 2008 sales, and thereafter.

I presume Merc. would be astonished at the huge sales of >5 m (S-class, etc). Highest ever for them in this segment.

For full 2007-08: Fiat can also point at a 51% growth for 2007-08! 2nd successive year of decline for HM. Lowest growth for Honda in 2007-08 (2.4% in 2007-08 vs 43.5% in 2006-07). Highest growth ever for GM, Merc. First year of decline for Ford. Sharply lower growth for Hyundai (10.9% in 2007-08 vs 22.8% in 2006-07). Also sharply lower growth for Maruti (12% vs 20.6%), and tata (0.4% vs 20.2%)

- Palio sales doubled Okay, that wasn't too difficult since the numbers have shot up by only 250 cars. But the MJD will surely see increased acceptance in the long run.

- Hyundais i10 is a rockstar! Man, the Koreans have moved almost 26,000 hatchbacks in a month.

- The Cedia is not popular only on Team-BHP, it actually seems to be doing far better in the market too.

- Honda NHC = Mega. Indian customers still think its the best city tool.

- Dzire and Indigo CS, expectedly, are off to strong starts.

- Slam dunk by the new C, selling 2.5 times the 3 Series.

- Civic outsells Octavia + Laura. So much for the Indian favouritism with diesels. Or is Skodas high maintainence, bad ***, expensive upkeep and below average reliability (Laura) catching up with them?

- 101 S-Class! No wonder you see them everywhere. Mercedes sells more 80 lakh S-Class than BMW sells 3 Series.

Guys, As TATA-FIAT JV published, they have achieved their target of selling 3K cars for 07-08. Sudden rise in sales seems to be MJD magic.. I hope this trend continues and FIAT posts 4 digit number soon...

I wonder what sales figures would be if we got the C class at 13 lakhs (33000$ in US) and the S-class at 40 Lakhs (100000$).
Car makers are yet to realize the full potential of the Indian car market. We lap up 20000$ toyota camry for more than 22 lakhs here!

Have you figured out what is the import duty and also the excise duty. Of course, car makers can absorb the duties and sell it to you at international market price. But usually that would mean a loss for them. I am not defending the makers but high duties=high prices=low consumer welfare=coddling of domestic makers=encouraging domestic car production.

The figure for HM in 3/08 is definitely higher, but that figure includes Lancer, Cedia, and Amby (largely to Govt. which also buys higher in 3/08 as anyone dealing with Govt. would know).

So WR improved tremendously in the last year compared to previous. From the total of SX4 and dzire we can allot 5000 cars to the dzire and so balance 4000 is SX4.This was predicted in some other thread by me that the sx4 sales for march would be tremendous in spite of the dzire launch.I had made that statement after getting the feedback from different dealers across.Good job done for SX4 and WR in the last year.
