So the Civic is selling more than 2.5x Corolla (though Toyota is thrilled with the numbers!). 197 units of their imported units vs. ~790 units from Honda..

They are really thrashing Toyota!

Today's Deccan Chronicle carries a half page advt for the Accent GLE, saying the Accent is here to stay. Looks like Hyundai's initial plans to stop Accent production and let Verna take over did not fructify. Or they want to keep it as an Esteem/Flair competitor while targetting the Verna for upper C segment.

Hyundai have realized the need for a presence in the entry sedan segment, which is where the GLE comes in, the competition here being the 'new' Ikon Flair, the trusted workhorse the Esteem, and what many expected to be a hot contender... the Logan.

The Verna despite Hyundai's high hopes, doesnt seem to have caught on all that well, except for the diesel variant owing to its engine. I personally feel its the looks that did the Verna in.

The Accent with its slightly boring looks is not ugly, and more of the old school designs which most of the sedans in this segment portray in their genes. Hence, its not so difficult to understand as to why the Accent has been revived. Did anyone see the new ads for the Accent, where i think it has been shown to sport beige interiors, taking a cue from the Flair.

I don't think Hyundai had any plans to discontinue Accent. They withdrew high-end variants of Accent to make way for Verna. Accent GLE will be slotted in 'B+' segment and will take on Ikon, Indigo, Logan & Esteem. Verna will be in 'C' segment and competes with Fiesta, NHC & Aveo.

The spate of launches by GM ,seems to be working very well for them ,they are fast catching up with honda and I believe just a matter of time before they overtake Honda in India[atleast till honda launches a small car].

Sales of passenger cars
-------------April2006
--- April2007--- Gain (%)
Maruti------ 41,574---------48,652------ 17.0
Honda------ 4,551---------- 4,891------- 7.5
GM--------- 3,662---------- 4,474------- 22.0
Tata------- 13328---------- 16,842------ 26.0
HMIL------- 15,007--------- 15,728------ 4.8

Has not been a particularly good year for the two H's,especially hyundai.
