Sales for Dec 2008 put here:

Yoy: year on year growth (12/08 over 12/07), mom: month on month growth (12/08 over 11/08)

Production declined 22% yoy in 12/08: 23% for cars; 69% for UVs, and 81% for MPVs (Omni, etc)
Sales down (yoy) by 14%: 7% cars, 44% MUVs, 21% for MPVs.
Overall sales up by 2% in 2008: huge increase for BMW, Merc, and Fiat. However, no one has been immune from recession from mid-2008 (growth down or growth morphed into decline).
800 on its last legs???
Huge decline for Tata Indica (sorry for this generalisation and apologies to private owners of Indica, but the commercial segment comprising Indica, Indigo, Tavera, Innova, Safari, Sumo, etc has been badly hit).
Maruti and Tata is loosing share in compact to Hyundai. Look at 2008 sales growth (col. BD) for Maruti and Hyundai.
Look at the huge growth of SX4/Dzire in 12/08, latest quarter, and for 2008. Dzire now seems to be the segment leader.
No one is buying Logan now (only 272 in 12/08). Fabia may be someone’s car of the year, but the public is not buying either the award or the car.
Linea sales of 131 in 12/08????
Corolla is now the leader in its segment, and beating both diesel and petrol. Could be 1-month effect though. Civic in its 18th successive month of decline (on a yoy basis). Yoy declines have averaged 60-70% in last 3 months.
Considering declines in Oct-Nov, seems unlikely for BMW and Merc to register huge gains in 12/08. Could be year end dealer stuffing to report to top management in Germany.
UV picture is very bleak with sales halving in 3 months.

Look how bad the scenario is:
four wheeler sales in 12/08 lowest since 4/2006
CV sales in 12/08 lowest since 4/2005
two wheeler sales in 12/08 lowest since 5/2004.

Civic also reported 475 in 6/2006 but launched in 7/2006. Dealer car??? Generally, one month does not make a year as all would know after going thru the numbers.

Fiat produced 283 Linea in 12/08. Honda produced 0 Civic in 12/08, 120 in 11/08, 0 in 10/08 and is perhaps clearing as old as 9/2008 stock. Corolla now clearing 11/08 stock.

FIAT did sold some Lineas in December to select few and then stopped the deliveries. There is one owner of this Linea in Pune and have seen his car in Magarpatta area.

On time, as usual! Way to go Vasudeva

ANHC seem to have stabilised at more or less NHC levels of 2900. Need to see how much of an impact would Linea launch have on ANHC numbers.

Fiesta has maintained its numbers very well, probably on that back of hefty discounts. Not sure why Verna is getting clobbered so badly all of a sudden? Are people waiting for the redesigned grill job in the name of facelift ?!!

M&M has dug itself deep in the pit along with Logan, while DZire is doing hte tricks for Maruti.

Civic is sliding slowly below 400, while Altis has consolidated at 500+ numbers. Not bad.

Skoda is sliding downwards gradually; would be interested to know how many Jetta's VW has managed to sell

Innova numbers are falling rapidly; may be people are waiting for the facelifted Innova. Toyota needs to act faster.

The next few months are going to e crucial for ANHC in the face of Linea onslaught. Hope Honda comes out with an anniversary version soon, with some decent interiors for the ANHC.

That is part explanation. Major reason remains collapse of CV sales and collapse of cars/SUVs catering to BPO/taxi/commercial segment: see the declines for Indica, Indigo, nearly all UVs, and also Omni.

Although domestic sales are now declining, exports continue to surge with growth of 65% in 12/08, 121% in 11/08, and 45% in Oct-Dec 2008. Commendable indeed. However, only Hyundai and Maruti have this cushion. Tata's exports have declined 47% in Apr-Dec 08. Fiat is now also exporting Palio.

Thanks Vasudeva.

Those Civic sales are pathetic - 392? It has steadily come down from a 1500 pm at one time. No wonder Civic E prices are reduced. ANHC sales to me looks a little low - NHC did around 3K per month and there's typically a euphoria when a new car is released - at least for first two months. Lets see how it will go.

Hyundai seems to be hit on Verna+Accent - only 878 this month. I guess next month would show an increase (just like Dec 07).

Mercedes sold 169 Es? Those huge discounts really helped i guess. Is close to Accord (171).

Skoda sold 296 Fabias! I wonder who buys them!!! Now, all they need is Fabia combi at 11L OTR.

131 Lineas and counting. Not a bad start!

The Ikon + Fiesta combination seems to have pulled out the carpet from beneath the Acccent+Verna duo.

Fiesta + Ikon : 1,932
Verna + Accent : 878

I wonder if Ikon diesel had anything to do with it. Else it might be the discounts on the Fiesta/

it could be both - the limited discounts for Fiesta & a well priced Ikon D.

Only winner seems to be Maruti, all other companies would be making loss in their balance sheets. I am guessing what do many dealers of Skoda, Toyota, Honda, GM, HM etc do with so little sale or no sale at all in whole month.

Couple of observations:

1.) Has anyone noticed that Accord sales have steadily gone down. From July to December Accord sold 510 , 460 , 372 , 244 , 186 and 171 units.

2.) I can't understand Toyota's Camry pricing. Accord sales show the potential Camry has at Rs.16 to 18 lakhs. Camry sales from July to Dec are 27 , 88 , 53 , 24 , 13 and 45 units.

3.) Even the Mercedes C class and BMW 3 are outselling the Camry!
