What Tata Motors may not have revealed in their PRs.
Sumo and Safari 2925 in 1/09 is down from 5125 in 1/08, or a 43% decline.
Indigo/Indica 15406 in 1/09 compared with 15261 in 1/08 or a 1% increase.
Overall, 18331 in 1/09 down from 22115 in 1/08, or a 17% decline.

That said it was a much bigger drop for them in Dec 08 over Dec 07 as compared to the 17% in Jan 09 over Jan 08. So comparatively it is more or less back on track. Let see how Feb goes for them and if the Decline % is higher or less and lets then also compare with other vendors then.

FIAT India bounce back with Linea

Fiat has recorded sales of 1512 units of its Linea since its launch last year.
Fiat’s total sales for the month of January were 1721. This is a huge morale boost for the company that had previously been overshadowed by the competition.
The car’s package of style plus practicality has gone down well with customers. As has its solid build quality and its ability to appear more expensive than it actually is.
Fiat has also exported 138 Palio Stiles to South Africa. To cope with increased demand, Fiat and Tata have been working to beef up their after sales service.

I read about the same kind of news during palio's launch.

Let them continue the trend 3 months onwards.

Problem laid somewhere else(A.S.S), rather than with the product(Palio) itself.

exactly. Palio as a product again was as sound as it could be. A.S.S. and the rumour of bad economy killed it. how can one compare 1.6 hot hatch FE to a 1.0 Maruti tin box (read lightweight)

I am a Palio owner myself, and I agree that one month sales figures of Linea are not enough to establish FIAT (or FIAL?) in market. Palio's sales dwindled in a year after the initial euphoria died down. Whatever the reasons, FIAT was simply NOT ready to handle the market then. Now Linea sales Performance over next many months is required to be seen.

Have posted 1/09 sales here:
vasudevadata - DOMESTIC SALES

Yoy: year on year (1/09 over 1/08), mom: month on month (1/09 over 12/08)

Although sales up 38% mom, they keep on declining on yoy basis.
Some temp. Revival of 800.
Maruti’s compact sales up, so for Hyundai and Tata. Others, notably Palio and Fabia, might as well close down, awards or no awards.
Hyundai Verna/Accent now declining on yoy basis. So is Logan. In mid-segment, only Maruti has posted yoy increases (Dzire base effect).
Linea sold 1509 in 1/09 being the clear and significant segment leader. Civic in 19th straight month of you decline, with declines greater than 60% yoy over last 4 months. See Optra sales
Very little 7 series/S class sales.
UV sales have crashed since late-2008 (cab/BPO slump).
Xylo boost for M&M.

Amazing. A Fiat car is the segment leader - unbelievable had someone said something similar a couple of years back.

Kudos to Fiat for managing it well

It is because Linea is longer and is clubbed with Civic/Corolla for the classification purposes while in reality it competes with ANHC, Fiesta, Verna etc.
