and probably those are some of the key criterion for people buying in this segment.

FE - should be taken care of by the 2 lakhs thats saved upfront. Its not as though you would get an FE of 8 on Fiesta and 16 on City. the difference is like 2 KM per liter @ the most and over 4 years and say 60K KM TCO should still be better on Fiesta.

Space - space enough for five indian adults, it no way feels cramped. Sure if you need the addtional space do choose the honda. by the way Porche's interior space should be less than honda's too but it certainly is more appealing, not an apple to aple compare, but still I think you should get the drift, If space is all that someone pays for optra, cedia should be outselling city in that price band.

Resale - well pay upfront and get more later, but how much more.If a car bought based on what its going to be sold for four years later, I guess the last two lakhs would depreciate faster.

Power - Please do drive them again, more bhp doesn't always mean more output.Read the fine print and let your eyes, hands and feet figure out which car is better in the power delivery.

I don't have an issue with the other points that you raise, but everyone is entitled to his opinion. How many posts have you read about unwieldy speed bumps and morons(under privileged and hardly cared for villagers who were never equipped to handled the changes in their usage pattern for roads, some times common sense is some thing you get after you know what to make sense of) crossing a highway or driving on the wrong side. thats an opinion.

You have an opinion on why City is better suited to your needs. that's Great. but do appreciate that others can have a different interpretation of the facts as they see it.

Hurray! have been checking this link for the past week for this one post.

Ford's selling more Fiesta-Ikon than Hyundai's Accent-Verna: thats new
HM#s include Amby as well or is it pure cedia #s if that's Cedia alone that's not bad at all for HM.

On an overall basis, domestic sales of cars, two wheelers have recovered somewhat in jan-mar 2009, but commercial vehicles still in the doldrums.

Of course, Skoda and other car sales are usually up in 3/2009 because of year-end, and depreciation. But except for laura segment, skoda sales in 3/2009 are substantially lower than in 3/2008.

As can be seen, 3/2009 sales were 14% higher than in 2/2009. But what matters is yearly growth, and in that respect, sales in 3/2009 were down 1.2% compared with 3/2008. For full 2008-09, overall sales up only 0.1% (or no growth at all). Amongst the volume players (excl. niche such as BMW and Merc), only Tata, Maruti, and Hyundai posted any sort of growth in 2008-09.

Before Honda people jump here, Linea is the segment leader for 3 month running now, period.

@ vasudeva: Thanks vasudeva for the numbers. I wanted to know if these numbers are ex-factory or ex-dealer. I assume it is ex-factory but I wanted to be sure. I am sure this has been answered before but couldn't find it quickly.

I guess you meant the Superb segment and not the Laura segment above because Laura segment is down by 55% vs March 08.

Cheers,

Its good to see FIAT is bouncing back. Now as customer confidence rises and if FIAT can produce & deliver cars on time, Linea can have a monthly sales between 2000 to 2500 in next 3-6 months. This is subject to FIAT improving its sales and service process even further.

Another 500-1000 cars can be added per month, if FIAT provides a more powerful diesel engine. Then it will also pose a challenge to ANHC.

Come on FIAT, you can do it.

One really weird number for March 2009:
Hyundai sold 1 car in 4.5-4.7 m segment (Elantra). It sold a total of 0 in this segment from 8/2008-2/2009, and 1 in 7/2009. Elantra has not been produced since Jan 2007. Who was the buyer??? for this.

- Skoda Fabia bounces back with a 106% M-O-M increase. However, Y-O-Y sales are down 20%.

- Palio sales are down 61% Y-O-Y. MJD has failed to revive the car.

- Which segment would i20 be in? Hyundai mid-size sales are down to 2391 units. Does that include i20 or it's exclusively Verna sales.

- I thought Fiesta would be hit the most by Linea since both have similar diesel engines but Linea has better features and looks. Despite being similarly priced, Fiesta is outselling the Linea by a HUGE margin.

- M-O-M sales of both City and Linea are up 27%!

- Sonata Transform seems to be stuck around 70 units per month.

- What about Innova? Where do we get the sales figures?

Maruti sells 8600 sedans...

If we count around 6600 Dzires, that leaves us with 2000 SX4's which is quite a number

Some ppl have said SX4 sales are around 1400,am not sure from where they got the numbers

Also,Linea selling just 1607 which is substantially low, however Vasudeva you still feel its a segment leader(when ANHC sells around 6K).Am I missing anything?

So roughly
Ford Fiesta 1400 (50% of the sales go to Ikon apart from this)
Hyundai Verna 1800 (considering around 500 Accents were sold)
Fiat Linea 1600
Maruti SX4 2000

You are not missing anything. Just the big joke about the way 'segmentation' is done - based on length. So since Linea is a few cms longer, it leaves its peers (the SX4, ANHC, Fiesta etc) in C-segment and gets into D-segment (executive).

And this for a car which in one of the most important car parameters (engine) is way behind even its peers. So, no need to even think how it will fare against those that rightly deserve their place in the D-segment.

So, if MSIL had stretched the boot and rear bumper of the Dzire by some more cms, technically it would have been in the Executive segment and would have beaten the current leader Linea by atleast 3 times in sales figures.

To get the correct picture, compare Linea figures with those of the ANHC, SX4, Fiesta etc and you will know who the leader is.

Absolutely, bang on target!

But wait..Fiesta TDCi is 68 bhp... Dzire is 75bhp...wait wait..even true "D" segmenter, Skoda Octivia is 90 bhp. So what? SX4 is 102 bhp, 10 bhp more than Linea. But oops, again Verna is 110 bhp. Oh so, SX4 is way behind its peers. But wait again, AHNC is 116 bhp. So all these Fiesta, SX4, Verna are all way behind its peer.

The numbers 6600 and 1400 are for February sales, where as the number 8600 is for March! Maruti sold around 8000 units of C-segment sedans in February.
