@GTO:

The 5 series also was also offered at a discount last month but not anywhere close to the E. Hence the sales picked up to that extent. The reason why the S still outsells the 7 is because there are barely any in stock with dealers, they are all awaiting shipments since the car is CBU.

At the present time, there is simply too premium on the BMW 7's price tag. I love the way that the new 7 looks. But my old-school tastes don't seem to match that of the market (case in point : The success of the 5 series & the new C Class). The 7 is an under-stated classy design; in comparison, the S looks like a party animal and brings with itself a higher sense of occasion. Even when BMW had no supply issues, the Merc S was ahead anyways. Jan - Dec 2008 311 7 series sold versus 549 S Class'.

Two things BMW needs to do to fight the S Class : Introduce smaller engines (especially a diesel to take on the popular S320 CDI) and thus, bring the onroad price within 3% of the S Class.

Interesting discussion taking place here.

Dear friends I am new to this forum. But i have been following this thread keenly.May i say
1. All bhpians are lovers of AutoS
2. Each and every car/auto is unique in its own ways just like every baby is only one of itself. some are going to love it others(neighbor)may not

Inspite of like dislikes and particular inclination can we avoid insulting some/any baby may it be ANHC or LINEA
just a humble request
love you guys for being so informed

NHC = Linea(P) power/weight

Actually NHC (77bhp/1055) and Linea petrol (90bhp/1241) have same power-to-weight ratios.
The point I am making is if general public could live with that then Linea (P) is also not underpowered by the same measure.
Of course taking brand-perception and resale out of the equation.

We aren't even going to discuss resale, but we all know how Fiat owners get skimmed in the used bazaar.

Yes,i will second that,considering that the NHC never felt underpowered in city and wasn't exactly a slouch either,thanks to a fair bit of torque from that engine.However,talking about performance alone,if we consider linea and NHC,linea outshines just because its much more a better handler than the city,which was very nervous anywhere on the wrong side of 100kmph.I am glad to see that linea is gradually making its mark on the market and there are a fair bit of takers for it even in times of econmic slowdown.The excitement for linea is quite high but the only thing that is keeping away the potential buyers is the poor record of Fiat in India,people are of a belief that just like the palio,linea too may later sink down.But it might not be the case this time all thanks to the great price,features and those mini-maser looks that make it just too irresistable.

Regards.

yes I third that infact!
I drove the NHC for a 300km drive on the NH5. It could touch 120 at best, and already the engine felt very stressed. It did not inspire any confidence to push it further. And the GQ roads are so good and tempting

Going by initial reports by TBHPians, the Linea feels rock-steady at those speeds.

I guess we are making this a Linea Vs City thread again LOL. Back to topic now.

@vasudeva: Thanks,

Some interesting observations:

1. The car maker to grow the most between 2002 and 2009 assuming they existed in 2002 is GM (32.6% yearly), followed by Honda (25.1% yearly)! Yeah the base for them was low to begin with!

2. The car maker to decline the most is Fiat (-13% yearly) and HM (-11.2% yearly)

3. Ford has just managed a 9% yearly growth

4. Hyundai / Tata Motors / M&M are in the 14.5% - 16% annual growth range

5. World's largest car maker Toyota managed just 9.3% annual growth

2002 - 2009 was a period of economic boom in India, but the spoils seems to have been shared unevenly among the car makers!

It will be interesting to see how 2010 - 2015 pans out, Nano will make an impact here and VW, among the world's top 3 car makers, is aiming for a 10% share by then.

Any bets on the top 3 in India in 2015? My guess would be Maruti, Tata and Hyundai!

Cheers,

Fiat India, on the back of the launch of new models,saw its sales go up nearly three-fold, from 450 in March 2008 to 1,817 in March 2009.

The past 3 years (2006-09) can be divided into a boom period till mid-2008, and then the most severe slump since 2000-01.

In 2Ws, see how far `hamara Bajaj' has fallen.

In 4w for 2008-09, industry stagnated at growth of 0.1% or no growth at all. Makers with higher growth gained market share and these include primarily the usual suspects-compact segment players such as Maruti, Hyundai, and to some extent Tata.

GM lost out in 2008-09 because it started 2007-08 with a volume car-Spark, which then started tapering off in 2008-09. Explains the phenomenal growth in 2007-08, the regular monthly press releases from GM in 2007-08, the decline in 2008-09, and the cessation of PRs. in 2008-09.

Toyota has struggled in 2008-09 because of the severe crash in MUVs, which has caused Innova sales to decline 21% in 2008-09 (see UVs). Except for M&M, UV sales declined for all major players-Toyota, GM, Tata,By comparison, Corolla sales jumped 30% in 2008-09, even as Civic declined 53%. Could be because of novelty effect, but I think the new Corolla has been more competitive than the old one. It could be that when Civic was launched in 2006, Corolla was there for 3.5 years, and had no novelty.

Finally see Maruti's overall share-maintained at 45-47% since 2002-03. That consistency has not been achieved by anyone else. Hyundai has gained from around 14% to 16%. Tata has been the loser with share declining from 17% in 2004-05 to 15% in 2008 and 2009.

The top 3 for 2015 are most likely to be Maruti, Hyundai, and perhaps one of Tata/Honda/Toyota. Honda and Toyota could come into top 3 if they launch a small car. Tata could remain in top 3 if Nano succeeds (very likely). No other way to break into the top 3 by 2015. By 2020, the story could be different as incomes keep on rising, and the compact segment goes the way of the Maruti 800.

Fiat 500 is in Fiat 3400-4000 mm alongwith Palio. Volvo, Nissan, VW do not give figs. Lancer Cedia reported alongwith Ambassador in HM 4001-4500 mm. Logan in M&M 4001-4500 mm.

You have mentioned sales of ford for 3400-4000 mm for 2008 and 2009, 1908 and 1929 respectively. I think they were of the diesel fusion. I think they are less than 4000mm, while the petrol variants are more than 4000mm. I hope you have taken this into consideration.

EDIT:
1. Technically suzuki zeus / heat / access are of 124cc but I guess you have taken them in the 125cc category, that is how Suzuki markets them in India.

2. Yamaha seems to have improved their sales very well for 2009. Do you have their break-up??

3. Majestic auto ltd, IIRC, they used to sell a moped known as panther. What happened to them in 2009?
