Interesting point to note is the Sumo sales, despite the new Sumo grande joining in there is not much of a movement in the Sumo sales which I am sure comprises of Sumo, Spacio & the Sumo Grande. I think it will be fair to say that last three four launches from Tata's have not been well recieved in market.

1. Winger : Very rarely seen
2. Magic : You can see some of them in the rural taxi market.
3. Indigo CS : Doing ok, but not as well as it was thought.
4. Tata Safari 2.2 : Still not selling as much as the Scorp or the Innova
5. Sumo Grande : Very rarely seen, I dont even know if it selling.

Interesting Stats

MiniB1: Wagon-R selling more than Santro and i10.. Surprising!!
MiniB2: As ususal, Swift doing great numbers
Small(wonder why it's called small segment!) : Surprising, SX4 and Dzire selling same numbers!! Now is the sx4 selling more or the Dzire selling less??

LowMEd: is it the lancer or the cedia?? or both?? I think lancer should come in the small segment.

MUV

Innova still rocks being costlier than other competetors.

Would like to bring attention to these observations.

Fabia is stated to be rocking at the higher price, but as far as we see it is at the bottom of its own segment nearly down by 60% from the second last. Then comparing its 2.7k numbers with 36K of the leader, it definitely rocks but at the rock bottom. Its numbers are not even worthy of the lower midsize segment where it is being positioned as an alternative to the sedans.

Now coming to the MUV part. Innova has done decent numbers allright, but if we remember Scorpio has the "number generator" versions (like M2DI and all) which also qualify as MUV's. The numbers of those combined with Bolero would actually show the Innova in a different light.

Then Safari is not really a MUV it is actually a SUV. It does not have "people mover" versions. In that its numbers should have been compared in the SUV segment where it would have actually been the market leader. Similarly for the Scorpio it has some "premium" versions which would actually fall in the SUV segment. Which would have indicated that the Scorp (Premium versions) and the Safari has actually gotten the SUV segment covered.

Now what is worrisome, from Tata standpoint is the performance of the Sumo. It has actually lost in a huge way, that too being fresh, as against the Bolero being quite old.

If there were ways of seggregating the different market positioning for a same model of a vehicle it would actually send out meaningful signals. Otherwise its still pure academic.

See it this way: Compare Estilo + Wagon R vs i10 + Santro. You will get your answer.

1. Logan is selling too good, still Indigo is more.
2. City sells almost double than SX4 (all variants together)
3. Verna is more than SX4 - so SX4 lost its leadership?
4. Civic as usual maintains leadership with significant difference over others
5. Maruti GV isn't listed at all, doesn't sell enough to deserve a place here?
6. Elantra stopped production isn't it? 13 sold were left overs?
7. GM's overall market segment share (all segments) in India is 5.7%, they badly need to improve.

The Winger seems to be a hit in Bangalore. I see loads of them. The Winger is also a regular feature on the GQ between Chennai and Bangalore. The Magic is strictly for the rural market, it seems. Lots of them in AP.

Indigo CS needs a keen eye to spot esp. from the front. Sumo Grande is visible, although not as much as the older Sumo.

I'm not trying to defend Tata sales here - just saying that if you look out for new vehicles (like I do), you can spot them.

Here in Delhi I have only seen 2 Wingers so far. Magic can be seen in rural areas of Haryana.

Indico CS is now becoming common sight in Delhi. For first couple of months I had this feeling "is CS selling at all".

Sumo Grande I am yet to see on Delhi roads, but saw 4 or 5 of them on GT road while returning from Shilma two weeks back. One dealer told me that around 700 of them are sold in previous month(April) nation wide.

I agree with Car Agey, recently I was on a 11 day trip to Manali, did see couple of wingers, some magic, some CS but no grandes at all. Beats me, where are they selling these vehicles, why aint they on the highway.

Surprise Surprise.

Old horse WagonR is the largest selling car in India, or at the most, second largest (since Alto figures are not available in that sheet).

But i expect i10 to soon take over.

And it has been that way over the past few months!

I dont think i10 will take over that fast. Reasons-
1. i10 is not priced as a mass seller. Its more like a quality product that you have to pay for.
2. WagonR sales also include sales of the LPG Duo version.

I think Verna petrol is a flop. Verna figures includes both Petrol & Diesel where Diesel sells more than the Petrol. Similarly Fiesta numbers comes mostly from the EDITIESEL. So in Mid size segment Number 1 is Honda city and next comes SX4.
