I expected Fabia 1.2 to sell better. Dunno what Skoda was smoking by going back to give some tune up on the car now.

Tata needs to launch the Indica X3 soon ! Wasnt it supposed to be out by July??? For MSIL Wagon R & Alto are doing a fabulous job. They need a good replacement for the Estilo which aint selling as much as Wagon R. I feel A-Star & Splash would surely do well .

Vasudeva,

Today's Economic Times says Ford has sold 1980 cars in June. Any idea why the numbers are different? Thanks.

Excellent factsheet Vasudeva. Thanks for sharing the same. I had been looking for the sales figures for Fiat, specially after the introduction of the MJD.

Car and Bike sales slowing down

NEW DELHI: Domestic car sales is heading for a slowdown, hit by high interest rates and inflation, which have dampened consumer sentiment and reduced footfalls to showrooms. June saw single-digit sales growth at 6.1%, quite a dip from 17% growth in April and 14% in May.

According to industry figures released by SIAM, car sales in June stood at 99,738 units against 94,002 units in the same month last year. While market leader Maruti Suzuki registered only 2.4% growth, Tata Motors' sales fell 5.4%. However, Hyundai India beat the trend and showed a 34% growth in sales, boosted by its i10 compact.

Car sales are up 12.3% in the April-June quarter, helped by the good offtake in the first two months. The two-wheeler story is no different. June saw motorcycle sales grow in single-digit 8.2% at 4.73 lakh units against 4.37 lakh units in the same month last year. The acceleration was led by Hero Honda which registered a 16.5% growth in sales even as Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors saw numbers shrinking. Bike sales in Q1 have grown 7.9%, though most of it is attributed to a low base.

Scooter sales failed to keep the momentum and fell 2.1% at 89,809 units from 91,759 units in the same month last year, SIAM said. While leader Honda Motorcycle and Scooter managed to eke out growth, TVS Motors suffered a reversal in numbers. Overall, the automobile industry managed a growth of 6.5% in June at 8.01 lakh units. If interest rates and inflation continue to remain high for some more months, the situation can worsen, analysts said.

On the commercial vehicle side, medium- and heavy-vehicle segment saw sales grow 8.4% at 21755 units, with growth both in the goods and passenger carriers led by Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland.

That is why they are the ET. It does belong to the ToI Group, which as you know, is perhaps the `best paper' in the world!

Perhaps they have their own sources (non-SIAM) of data. Perhaps Ford is channel stuffing and `sold' only that. The data in the excel sheet is the only official data you will get. No less and no more than this.

Well I guess this is good news for Al Gore and Global Warming.

On a serious note, the Govt. should reduce some of the taxes and duties if they want to encourage greater sales.

Can you see the trend in this and the implication for switchover cars (from 2W) such as Nano/M-800:

Year on year (yoy) growth for 4W has declined from 17.2% in 4/08 to 6.1% in 6/08. The 800-segment declined 30% in 4/08, increased 25% in 5/08, and declined 14% in 6/08. For April-Jun 08, sales in 800 segment declined 7.5%.

In the 2w segment, yoy growth was negative in each month from 3/07 to 3/08. Suddenly, yoy growth turned positive at 8% in 4/08, 7% in 5/08, and 6.5% in 6/08. Almost all growth in motorcycles.

I can see two things: switchover consumers are shifting from 800-segment to motorcycles/used cars (data not available for this).
Even 2W growth is now tapering because of sharp price increase in 6/08.

Whichever way you see it, expect a bad year for auto in 2008-09. Conversely, great bargain hunting for consumers.

Thanks, makes sense.
And given the pricing that Ford had in June for Fiesta, I would guess the excel sheet numbers are more believable.

First, source for this figures?.
If these figures are true, in its segment, City is not the market leader in many more states than the above 3. Of course, Indigo sells at 5 and City starts at more than 7. Apart from City; Indigo, Fiesta, Verna, SX4, Dzire have a leadership position in some states.
