Guna, sorry but you are wrong - please check here for K10. http://www.altok10.com/Brochure.pdf

brochure says "best in class performance 0-100 in 13.3 seconds".

I was able to gather these figures by googling.

The A8 is available with the following wide range of engines:
I am not sure about A8, but the R8s can do a ton in that time. the Regular R8 is a 5.2 FSI ($172K, 525bhp@8000, 391@6500rpm) and does a 0-60m in 3.7s. And then there's the Superleggara R8 GT which does it in 3.1s. Same engine, but the Superleggara is ~120lbs lighter.

Both stats as tested by Car & Driver in Dec 10. I dont think either of them are available in India.

And i think we are missing the Porsche's which can do a 3.x in under 1 Cr.

Thanks. I was quoting ACI figures.

Re: How much does a one second cost: 0-100kmph time vs lowest price

Well the point worth deliberation is how many indians actually look for 0-100 figures before buying a car? I am sure that would only be a small fraction. The driving factor IMO is the brand image, cost of maintenance, resale value and ofcouse FE. The Corolla Altis Diesel is perfect example for this.

I met a person yesterday who was extremely happy with his Logan. He actually said this: "I got FE of 29km/L on the highway at speeds of 120-130. And the pickup is amazing. Within 4 seconds it goes to 100km/h from standstill. Bolo to abhi bata doon!!".

He is an engineer and owns a fastener manufacturing unit. If this is what an engineer says, what do you expect from the masses? I think that the meaning of 0-100 and handling is yet to pentrate the minds of the average indian buyer.

Re: How much does a one second cost: 0-100kmph time vs lowest price

Dear OP
1. I'm shocked that a BHPian can mistake an R8 for an A8.
2. And as a technical guy, I can tell that to go from 14 seconds to 13 seconds is as easy as it is difficult to get from 5 seconds to 4 seconds.
I think this thread and topic is pointless.

What does it run under the hood? Rolls Royce turbine engine with after burners?
I think the data used to plot the graph needs another proof read.

5.8 secs is the time mentioned at various places.

from:
Audi A8 L: Comfort of a sedan, style of a sportscar - The Economic Times

Quote:
As far as the performance figures go it can do a 0-100 kmph sprint in about 5.8 seconds and can take you to an electronically limited maximum speed of 250 kmph. Audi claims that it consumes about 13.6 litres of petrol for a 100-km run in the city, which for a car of this size is surely enviable

Re: How much does a one second cost: 0-100kmph time vs lowest price

I guess the OP got confused between R8 that was recently launched (which indeed does a ton in 3.9s) and A8 (and A6 and A7) which are to be launched in Feb '11 acc to a press release by audi.
To me the comparision is pointless, if we are comparing just accelerations then why not Atom, it is the fastest production car that does 0-60m in about 3 secs!! Luxury cars are expensive for many other reasons than just 0-100 run timings.

Thanks Guna. Well, there's manufature's claim and here's ACI numbers then. I guess the truth lies somewhere in between

Sorry Guys, my bad totally. It is R8 not A8. What a blunder! As a BHPian I should know the difference. I must have been sleeping when posting.

Further Alto K10 brochure does say 0-100 in about 13 sec, but AutoCar mag says 15.xx sec. Which one to believe?

Also Audi A4 3.0 TDI figures are also taken from the same magazine.

Posting the corrected figure
How much does a one second cost: 0-100kmph time vs lowest price-0100.jpg

I know comparison of supercars and A-star and Swift in the same breath is pointless, this is just for entertainment purpose only. As the title suggests : what is cost of one second. As one can see the cost of one second from 14 to 13 to 12 is pretty close. But it exponentially increases when one approaches 8,7,6... This really reflects the cost of engineering such cars. That is something we all know. But thought to share it in a graph form.

Maybe you should consider the Optra here, which I think does a 0-100 in less than 10 sec. It could replace the City as its cheaper than the city but is faster.

Re: How much does a one second cost: 0-100kmph time vs lowest price

The 0-100 figures look superb on paper and make good marketing presentations.
Alas.. they have all but become a race within the manufacturers to churn out more bhp and give faster acceleration times to their lifestyle category of cars.

These figures make a interesting read and they sound nice to hear especially if you watch TOP GEAR and listen to Clarkeson, hammond & May. These figures, i m sure act as a shot of adrenalin while watching these entertaining TV programs, but sadly all good things end there.

In real life i don't think anyone would buy a car just because it does 0-100 in so & so seconds.

How about adding a 0-100-0 chart? Not sure if data is easily available.

Maybe I am shooting in the dark here, BUT what is the 0 - 100 timing for the recently launched Mitsubishi EVO X? I think it is pretty quick upto the ton.

I'm surprised to note that Fiat Linea T-Jet is missing in this graph. Any reason behind this?

Re: How much does a one second cost: 0-100kmph time vs lowest price

I don't think DOT has posted this thread as a purchase guide. His question is simply how much does a sec cost?

If this were to be a purchase guide for Indian conditions, then we should be looking at the best times for a 20 - 60 kmh run since I personally feel that is when we require the maximum pick-up on our roads.

A car with the best 0 - 100 time may not be the one with the best 20 - 60 time. Many cars, especially the hatches, struggle to pick up speed after 70.

As someone mentioned in one of the posts, the atom should make it to the list but is it readily available in India?
