I think so too.
There is no pint of selling the current S-Tech 2 engine for just a year and then replacing it. Ford and GM are very lethargic to develop new models / facelifts / engine change. Look at their history no major change in Spark till date.

I think it is the same engine with more local contents. May be they have worked on the gear ratios. Beat's ratios are all on the taller side.

Thanks GTO for the spec and info.

Can you please put the current and this one side by side and compare. Power and torque is same!

Re: GM Introduces new 1.2 litre SMARTECH Engine

Hi engine-vengine guys, the engine description mentions use of 'nut-less split con-rods'. what exactly is this ? Which of the current crop of 1.2s from rival manufacturers already use them ?

Re: GM Introduces new 1.2 litre SMARTECH Engine

Ok, did some more reading up last night on this engine.

For one, the R&D for the engine was done at its Bangalore technical research centre and the production will happen at its Talegaon plant

The new engine, apparently, will be offered in the Beats being sold from next month onwards.

For now, I am listing out what the new engine is purpouted to have, and then will compare it with the old engine

1. Aluminum cylinder heads
2. Deep skirt cylinder block
3. Lightweight pistons with low tension rings
4. DOHC valve-train with direct acting valve actuation to further improve the efficiency
5. A long runner plastic intake manifold
6. Lightweight counterbalanced crank shaft
7. Inverted tooth timing chain drive system
8. 80.5PS @ 6200 rpm
9. 108Nm of torque @ 4400 rpm.
10. Epoxy coating on the cylinder block
11. Anti corrosion coating on cam cover baffles
12. Use of stainless steel core plugs and bay to bay ventilation.

P.S. These have been sourced and compiled from various articles on the web

Re: GM Introduces new 1.2 litre SMARTECH Engine

Thanks dreamcatcher for the comprehensive list of claimed improvements.
But it does seem from the list that GM has made it up to look like a major upgrade while its actually only a little or nothing more than localisation of parts.

Had GM managed to reduce so much friction, it will sure reflect on the power and torque figures as well.
That is what will result in any noticable difference in drivability (unless there is any change in the transmission or the ECU)
When that is not achieved, i really don't see any point to claim it as an upgrade.

Or is this in someway going to improve the engine life?

And is this upgrade specific to the Indian market? If so its purely nothing but the same engine with localized components.

Re: GM Introduces new 1.2 litre SMARTECH Engine

1. Aluminum cylinder heads---Already present
2. Deep skirt cylinder block---Cant say, no specific demarcation as deep skirt.
3. Lightweight pistons with low tension rings---All current engines come with low tension rings.
4. DOHC valve-train with direct acting valve actuation to further improve the efficiency---Already present
5. A long runner plastic intake manifold--Already present
6. Lightweight counterbalanced crank shaft--Already present
7. Inverted tooth timing chain drive system--Already present (I guess)
8. 80.5PS @ 6200 rpm
9. 108Nm of torque @ 4400 rpm.
10. Epoxy coating on the cylinder block--Cant Say
11. Anti corrosion coating on cam cover baffles -- Do you mean cam cap? There is some coating for sure.
12. Use of stainless steel core plugs and bay to bay ventilation. -- Didnt get it.

This technology is about 10 years old and almost de'rigueur now. Conrod is forged as one piece and then fracture split to create the cap.

these are baffles inside the cam cover for oil separation.
Core plugs are necessary to remove the cores used in sand casting
Bay-bay vents reduce drag on the piston during downstroke

Re: GM Introduces new 1.2 litre SMARTECH Engine

But will it give GM any edge over the K-series 1.2 or the recently launched 1.2 VTVT (variable valve timing) in the i10 is a big question mark.

Which engine is this based on?

I just got my Beat LT Sandrift Grey today morning. Plan to write a TD and initial ownership report after a few days. I booked it on Jan 22 and was ruing it because I thought I was going to get the last lot of the old engine. Fortunately, to my surprise, I did get the new one.

Here is the picture I took this morning.

Re: GM Introduces new 1.2 litre SMARTECH Engine

I have only one question "KITNA DETI HAI ?"

I hope this new engine will be more fuel efficient. Companies should target for more fuel efficient cars. Recently petrol prices are going up & up only. Its 63.50 in Pune for one litre. So it is very important that car should be fuel efficient so that more & more common people will buy it.

Re: GM Introduces new 1.2 litre SMARTECH Engine

GM is going ahead with the launch of the Smartech engine at many cities and Thiruvananthapuram was one such where it was launched yesterday.

Perhaps like the K series engines of Maruti Suzuki which was a run away suces GM wants to create similar eauphoria across the country to uplift sagging Beat sales.

Even people who are totally ignorant about any kind of engines praise The K series as the next best thing that had happened to the automobile other than the automobile itself. (I am not undermining the Kseries or the Smartech)

Re: GM Introduces new 1.2 litre SMARTECH Engine

+1
I was going through the old pictures of beat in gto's review and the newly launched ones. Both are smartech II. And i feel the older version of the the stec II might actually have better quality imported components. The salient features that they are claiming today were present in the older stec-II also.
In a nut shell its the same engine albeit locally made ,may be with a different ecu mapping.

Re: GM Introduces new 1.2 litre SMARTECH Engine

Guys,

My sis has booked a Beat. The LS model. Its a complete VFM purchase. She gets the power steering, front power window version@3.8 lacs with Gurgaon registration.

How do one recognize which engine is her car getting. The dealer doesn't have 'clack' colour that we have requested and so will get one for us. Although this should, in all probability, be the 'Smartech' engine but how can I figure it out?
